- In 1980, England beat Argentina 3-1 at the legendary Wembley Stadium, in a match that marked Diego Maradona's first appearance against the English team. And here we see the precocious genius of Maradona, at just 19 years old, facing the then best player in the world, Kevin Keegan.
The next competitive match between the two teams would not be until the 1986 World Cup, in Mexico, in the quarter-finals of the competition.

💥Kevin Keegan at the best moment of his career?
@@FootballLegends01 A friendly against Argentina? I should have thought his best moment was the European Cup Final of 1977 or the FA Cup of 1974.
@@FootballLegends01 Maradona stole the show despite loss.

Maradonna at 2.10 showing what he would do a bit better in 86
Loved the old Wembley, hate the new one!
I’d take the old one, minus the dog track and with the new one’s toilets - the 7 metre wide river of piss in the concourse never did it for me
Both shite. Unless your in the bottom tier in the new one it's like looking at ants.....less said about the old one the better. Dump.
I agree with you, and the new Wembley looks smaller than the actual pitch itself doesn't look the same size of the old Wembley.
@@Clem_Fandango11 It did look an awesome place on TV though....from Australia l visited twice and even though it was old and tired, it was still the football mecca for me.
@@NotButterfly-1313 being there was a different story... Felt miles from the game because of the dog racing track outside and if you were further back many views were restricted because of the beams holding the roof up. Then, as mentioned above, the toilets... You really were wading through wee and it was disgusting.
That goal which Diego didn´t scored to Clemence was the trigger to the Best Goal Ever in a WC on 1986. His brother told him to fool the goalkeeper and go on by his right, and then, kick the ball. So he did in 1986, but this time with Shilton.
There was a coach laid on at school to go and see this game, would have seen Maradona play even if he wasn't a household name then. Can't believe I didnt take the opportunity. 😔
Keegan fue una superestrella del futbol
Así es
Most of the time, we can only beat the top teams in friendly games
Very true.
When soccer had a different taste, a better one.
Que dos capitanes!!!!!
Keegan y Daniel Pasarella!!!!
I hate bleeding passarella
who would have predicted back then 2 two years later argentina and uk would be at war again but politically this time over falklands islands with soldiers from each country doing away with each other
Mi querida ARGENTINA !!!🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Maradona was CLASS in this game, two great passes, one great run and another that created a penalty.
Just 19 years old
Maradona 2:00..No comment..⚽️
Loved Keegan one of the greats 😊
I came her for Maradona but walked out with the greatest Football shirts ever designed
That england shirt?
What great England! And what atmosphere 🇬🇧
David Johnson, a much underated striker who should have played more for England, a whisker away from a hatrick in the best of his 8 caps....great save from Fillol
WOW Maradona...just WOW !!
Yehhh babyy!! lol
england knew about maradona 6 years before mexico 86. Was Shilton asleep, or just pissed?
Both
Brilliant turn
David Johnson had a great season in 79-80. He should have played in the Euros that year, I think Greenwood chose Birtles instead.
best kit ever

When players in their 20s looked like they were in their 40s
LOL
Maradonna Kebab Pole Dancing?❤
David Johnson….great England stats. Should have got more caps
Perfeito. Faltou somente o drible final. Guardou par 86 😀
Liverpool 3 Argentina 1
England are great when there's nothing at stake.
They didn't even qualify for the finals the year the Argentines won the World Cup.
Eliminated on goal difference by Italy-it was very hard to qualify then
Maradona cheating as usual with a dive to get the penalty
6 liverpool players.
Liverpool is BIG!
Always thought Keegan was overrated
You thought right. He slipped in between the end of the magical period of Georgie Best in England and Beckenbauer and Cruyff in Europe, and the emergence of the new greats Platini, Zico, and you know who.
@@elspencer6334 Not at all. Look at his record. A very good player who made himself into an excellent one by going abroad and listening to better coaches. A lot of British players thought other people couldn't teach them anything else just because they could handle a ball and Best never achieved as much as Keegan. Twice European footballer of the year as well.
@Ruda-n4hI'd rate Kenny Dalglish over Keegan despite not winning European footballer of the year award.
@Ruda-n4h Keegan is one of the lesser players to be named European Player of The Year - both times he won it by default. And don't ever say that he "achieved" more than Best. Did Keegan get England to The World Cup in 74 or 78? Did he do anything in 82? He did nothing in the European Cup Final of 1980, either. Dalglish was vastly superior, and Best was on another planet. Oh, and Keegan didn't make himself a "better" player by going abroad. His peak - such as it was - was at Liverpool, where he knew his place and role (as a busy striker), and he didn't waste his time dropping back and trying to create and strategise, like a midfielder - which he patently lacked the skills and brain to do.
@@elspencer6334 I would go as far as to say that Pele couldn’t have qualified England in ‘74 and ‘78 with the management they had then, and Keegan was injured at the 1982 World Cup and past his best.
Dalglish was dead pissy at Celtic - he might occasionally score from 25 yards - it took the move to Anfield to make him the player he was, and Best was a disgrace to his profession. Keegan was more consistent than either of them at international level.
It took a Yugoslav (of course) Branko Zebec to get the best out of Keegan at club level and England’s best ever coach (Ron Greenwood) to get the best out of him for England. It was not without significance that he considerably improved for England from 1977.
