J'avais 12 ans lorsque j'ai vu la Coupe du Monde 1970 , et pour moi, il y a deux moments extraordinaires. Le 1er, c'était pendant le match Brésil/ Uruguay, lorsque Pelé récupère le ballon que lui adresse Tostao, laisse filer le ballon à droite du goal uruguayen tout en contournant celui-ci, et tire de la droite, mais hélas le ballon passe de très peu à gauche du poteau. Le grand pont de Pelé est tout simplement une oeuvre-d'art. Et le 2ème moment, lors de la finale Brésil/ Italie, lorsque Pelé fait une passe en aveugle à son capitaine Carlos Alberto qui arrive dans son dos par la droite et marque le 4ème but. Un journaliste avait dit à propos de Pelé : '' Les anglais ont inventés le football, Pelé en a fait un art '' . Pelé avait autant de génie pour animer que pour marquer , et il restera pour longtemps, sinon pour toujours, le meilleur joueur de tous les temps , et l'équipe du Brésil 1970 est sûrement une des meilleures de toute l'histoire de ce sport. Une autre équipe du Brésil était extraordinaire, c'était celle de 1982 lors de la Coupe du Monde en Espagne, pour moi la 2ème meilleure avec le sublime et génial Socrates à la baguette . Grew up in Mexico during that summer of 1970 and remember the atmosphere which was electric. Mexico loved their fútbol and the school kids were out there playing in the fields having a great time emulating our heroes. Went back in 1986 and was in Guadalajara to watch Brazil France game which was a classic. Good times. I’m definitely going back for 2026

I remember watching them destroy England 3-1 at Wembley in 1972 in the European Championship quarter final first leg. Gunther Netzer was unplayable that day - size 13 boots and all ! Revenge - again - for the Germans for the World Cup defeat in 1966; and probably, too, the German victory led to Alf Ramsey's demise two years later when England failed to qualify for the World Cup - held in Germany ! Mind you, it's possible to argue that the Polish team from that era - 1973/74 - were also one of the 'goats' - Lato, Deyna, Kasperczak, Gorgon, Tomesheshevski et al. I was 10 and this was the team that made me love football, pure genius. Brazil have tried to emulate that team so many times, the closest and second best was the 82 team. The one fault they had was their thought process was they would always score one more than the other team. They are without doubt even today the one team that you always want to watch.

It's always going to be a contentious one - but, without doubt, this Brazil side 1970 vintage are surely the 'Goats' ! The greatest ever International side - although as a football man, I would also contend that the Hungary teams of the early 1950s, the Brazilian team at the 1982 World Cup, probably too the great Dutch and German teams of the 1970s may have run them close.
@Ruda-n4h Yes. I would agree with you - certainly about the great West German team of 1972 vintage; superior to the Helmut Shoen teams of 1966, 1970 and 1974 in my opinion. Built around the great spine of Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbaeur and Gerd Muller from Bayern Munich - with the crucial added dimension of Gunther Netzer in the classic No. 10 playmaker role in midfield; plus great stalwarts like Wolfgang Overath et al. I remember watching them destroy England 3-1 at Wembley in 1972 in the European Championship quarter final first leg. Gunther Netzer was unplayable that day - size 13 boots and all ! Revenge - again - for the Germans for the World Cup defeat in 1966; and probably, too, the German victory led to Alf Ramsey's demise two years later when England failed to qualify for the World Cup - held in Germany ! Mind you, it's possible to argue that the Polish team from that era - 1973/74 - were also one of the 'goats' - Lato, Deyna, Kasperczak, Gorgon, Tomesheshevski et al. Unlucky to lose to West Germany in the final group match in the 1974 World Cup - and could easily have beaten the Dutch in the Final, in my opinion.

Comme je l'ai aimée et admiré cette équipe du Brésil 1970!! Je n'ai jamais plus revu un tel jeu offensif par la suite. J'avais 16 ans il fait dire, et le football c'est l'enfance sans doute...J'avais vu tous les matchs qui finissaient tard le soir. Je les avais revu au cinéma le Rex à Aix ensuite avec mon ami Michel Souleillet.

I was 10 and this was the team that made me love football, pure genius. Brazil have tried to emulate that team so many times, the closest and second best was the 82 team. The one fault they had was their thought process was they would always score one more than the other team. They are without doubt even today the one team that you always want to watch.
