I’ve used the ordinary’s 10% Azaleic acid every morning for 2-3 years. I didn’t notice improvements for quite a while. My skin used to flush easily and I didn’t tolerate 1% retinol more than 3x/wk. and ascorbic acid was a total no go. I’m now using retinaldehyde 5x/wk and ascorbic acid daily. I think a lot of the reduced sensitivity is due to the Azaleic acid

The most I've used it was once a day - good results for general brightening and helping fading red scars. It hasn't done much for acne - not even when combined with a retinoid. I use Finacea - not sure how long is good for after opening. A tube lasts me forever but maybe it loses potency overtime

I have been using azealic acid (Finacea 15%) every other day at night for almost a month now and I already see less comedones and only had one single spot since. I can feel a less tingling sensation now compared to the first days, so tolerance buildup is working too.
On the days I don’t use AA I have started BR P50W, also at night.
I’m all about learning how my skin reacts as I have gotten terrible reactions by overdoing in the past.
Now wondering how and if these two products could be combined with a retinoid in the future?

I confess I'm a sporadic user lol - largely because I find slotting it in regularly quite difficult. At the mo, I use a vitamin c serum every morning and am building up to retinol every night. Fyi I have mild rosacea and some pigmentation on my cheeks. I don't know if I'd be better ditching the Vit C and using Azelaic acid every morning instead. It's a skincare minefield out there 🤣. I honestly don’t know where to start with my skin anymore. I have always tried to take care of of it, but have so many issues to consider I don’t know where to start. I have oily skin, very large pores (actually large not just me obsessing) thanks to genetics, I’m 39 so starting to see early signs of aging, and redness. I really don’t know if it is rosacea or permanent redness and broken capillaries. At the same time my skin will suck the moisture out of any foundation I wear and appear dehydrated.
I would love to have good skin and go makeup free confidently one day but I don’t think it will ever happen.

Hi I share your pain 😢
I have chronic eczema, melasma and recently developed hormonal acne and it’s hard to know what to tackle first. For me it made sense to start by tackling my weakened skin barrier first, this meant a really simple consistent routine of double cleansing, moisturiser and sunscreen and prescription cortisone that could help the eczema recover first. Then once I got eczema under control- about 6-8 months and my skin barrier was strong I picked on the next skin issue that bothered me that was relatively easier to tackle and manage and that for me was hormonal acne treated that constantly for 3-4 months and brought under control. Now I am treating the melasma. When you have multiple problems you are going to have to prioritise what to tackle first and it will be a marathon rather than a race. But I would start by assessing your skin barrier and making it strong first then pick one skin concern at a time. Overtime you will see improvements that will overlap each other. Good luck!

    • @alexleee3885
      @alexleee3885 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@sulives hey 👋 I've got an answer from multiple derms including dr sam on Instagram. so basically there isn't any data that suggest negative effects from long indefinite use of azelaic acid gel. as long as you tolerate it, you can use it as long as u want to, keep in mind that its naturally present in your skin already. plus many rocesea patients are required to use a topical azelaic acid treatment for the rest of the life as a maintenance treatment. its safe, gentle and effective. in addition, it has a low ph, which is crucial for healthy skin and skin barrier, because only in slightly acidic environment your skin can function its best. however, when it comes to acne, it can change with time. so azelaic acid might not be enough on its own, but again its not the azelauc acid but rather your body, hormones, your environment and stuff like that.

Hello Dr Sam. I do alternate retinol (neutrogena 0,3%, as I can not tolerate Olay retinol 24)and Azelaic acid (finacea) at night because I have quite sensitive skin. I used to apply my moisturizer first. For the past week, I started to let go the moisturizer step, turning to one night with retinol and the other night Azelaic acid which seemed to work better. Is there any moisturizing effect with those 2 or do we absolutely need a moisturizer at night on top? With time I realized that when there are too many active ingredients at once I feel that I am loosing control without being able to target the irritation ingredient. In the morning, I use vit C, day moisturizing cream and sunscreen 50. Should I add Azelaic acid and where in my day regimen? Thank you for your help!

Dr. Sam, I really appreciate the information you provide about Azeliac Acid. I have rosacea and my dermatologist prescribed Finacea. My skin reacts badly when using this gel. My skin gets itchy and fills with little white heads. I was told that the reaction is due to a "normal purge". I've purchased a couple of creams wirh a lower concentraton (10% instead of 15% azeliac acid) and I applied it only at night time. Sorry to say that I get the same reaction. Over the azeliac acid I wear my regular moisturizer (Khiels) which I have been using for years. Any tip you could provide me with? I truly feel that my skin does better without any acids or actives. Try to apply it over serum , hyaluronic acid for example . Or over toner . You can skip moisturizer though , unless you feel you need extra hydration and soothing , especially in winter . I just started using azelaic acid , paulas choice 10% booster . It made my skin dry and sensitive , even though I got combo to oily skin , even with moisturizer . Over hyaluronic acid it feels great , no redness , no breakouts or dryness , I skip moisturizer. My problem is it has also covered my face in tiny comedones (skin colored bumps). I am thinking whether i should stop using azelaic acid or wait for 6 weeks mark to see if it is actually purging.
Please can anyone give me any suggestion. TIA

Hi, I don't think the comedones are caused by the azelaic acid, its the other ingredients in it that could be the culprit. Try using the azelaic acid from the brand Q+A, very clean minimal ingredients.

When you say you wouldn't want it around areas where fine lines exist, is it because azelaic acid collect in these lines causing it to thin and make it deeper?

It breaks me out so bad every time I use it. I hear the benefits of azelaic acid all the time but I guess my skin is just meant for it.

It could be the formulation, my husband has extremely sensitive skin and we have used Azelaic acid to treat his rosacea and I find Cos De BAHA Azelaic acid to be a very gentle but extremely effective product, it took 3 months of daily use but it worked. Consider changing formulations

I have a lot of closed comedones + oily skin recently and started using Paula’s choice AA a week ago.
My skin is even oilier/I have more closed comedones and blackheads. No redness or sensitivity. Is this a purge of all the gunk coming to the surface, or am I reacting badly to the product?

      @jennifercoqs 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

the purge will last only for a few week and then you'll see ur skin getting better , you are not using it badly it's just the purge everyone experiences using AA

If you are using prescription medication for your Rosacea, you will need to discuss the introduction of new products with your prescribing physician.
We would always recommend consulting your prescribing physician for suitable products to use alongside your treatment.
If you have any further questions or there is anything else we can do for you, please let us know!

I know you said that azelaic acid lessens skin sensitivity, but for me, even 10% seems to make my skin peel and burn...

Try a skin barrier repair cream (my latest video mentions a few) before introducing an active at a high level

I recently bought your azelaic acid serum, Dr. Sam. I haven't started using it yet because upping my tret has messed up my skin (dry patches and over sensitivity), so I'm waiting for my skin to calm down a little to get started with the azelaic acid. Can't wait. I'm trying to tackle mild rosacea.

I used the Naturium azelaic Acid everyday for nearly 3 months (every morning), stopped for a month when I ran out as it’s not available in the UK - my spots calmed down, skin looked brighter and face generally looked better without it 🙃 Feel the same when I’ve used a vitamin c serum - my skin just doesn’t like vit c or azelaic acid.

Dr Sam, may i know that if azelaic acid works well with vit c or retinol? I want to incorporate AA into my skincare routine but dunno if i pair it with vit c in am or layer on top of retinol in the evening would cause any side effects or not?

VIT C + azelaic acid in the AM and retinol at night - she had mentioned this in one of her videos where she talks about layering azelaic acid with other actives

I use 15% gel for rosacea and I totally noticed what you said, on the long term it has made my skin much more resilient.
It improves a lot the texture too!
I feel that alone it is not enough to really get clear skin and as anti age or to support collagen, but on the other hand I am a bit afraid to introduce vit c, salicylic acid or other actives with rosacea prone skin on top of azelaic

Try a gentle retinoid first - check out. our Retinoid playlist for guidance. Flawless Nightly Serum is a great place to start as it combines calming azelaic acid with a gentle retinoid.

I've been using it every day for the past 50 days, but I feel it was great in the first 2 weeks max, including on my PMS acne.
it dried out all my pimples, and then it just stopped showing any kind of results.
now my period is back and my chin is full of painful red acne again 💔💔 and I have some red dots on my cheeck, just like before I started using it. last week I had also a really bad perioral dermatitis episode together with my PMS acne 🤡🤡

I've been using azelaic acid for quite a few months now (Inkey, 10%) - mainly once a day - and have seen no benefits, my skin is as red as it has always been. I've now upped it to twice a day over the past month but haven't seen any difference. I'm not very hopeful its going to make any difference to my skin 😞
