One thing I love about this clip: Everyone listening is looking worried or nervous until he is finished, EXCEPT his wife, his mother, and Myrtle Logue, all of whom are smiling and looking incredibly proud throughout his speech. It says a lot.
Everyone else is hearing their King explain they are at war again; they are the only ones listening to a worried man pushing through an almost life-long speech impediment.
*I disclude Lionel from this because he just told Bertie to "say it [the speech] to me as a friend."
Colin Firth earned and deserved his Best Actor Academy Award for his role as His Majesty King George VI. A man who never wanted to be King nor was supposed to be King, but lived through his stuttering problem and served the Empire and Commonwealth with distinction!
If you think this scene is powerful, thank Beethoven. I felt the power of that music before I saw this scene. This music attached to a lot of scenes would cause for a powerful reaction. Very well chosen music, #TheKingsSpeech ..*bravo*

Both, I would think. Geroge VI became a poster child of resistance to the f**ing Nazis, even when England was all alone.

I love the analogy drawn between the cadence of a good speaker/speech and the assured poise of a conductor keeping an entire orchestra in pace.
Exactly and contrasting that, the images (in the viewers mind) of his dad railing him while trying to make a speech in prior years when he was young.

This movie is absolutely fantastic. From the first scene at the start it has you on edge of your seat and hooks you in, to the last scene it is spellbinding watching Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush together in that little room. The music perfect. Credit has to go to Helena Bonham Carter who portays Queen Mum to perfection
Seriously such a wonderful movie. They couldn't have picked a better song for this scene in the movie.
Although I am only 12 years, I enjoy classical music sooo much. I have re listened to this song for almost three days in a row now. This movie had some of the greatest actors. They really captured the emotion that these real people had.

OMG what just happened?!?! I was in tears, face in my hands...not only goosebumps but tingling with pins & needles.....absolutely flooded with emotion! It shows scenes representing/encompassing everyone in the UK: young, old, rich, poor....to profoundly illustrate that everyone -- no exceptions -- is affected by the war. Love how every single citizen's look on his or her face is completely reverent. It's so hard for me to pick a favorite frame within the scene, but if I must choose it would be 4:10 - 4:17..the music in crescendo, the King's heartfelt words about tribulation and courage as they show the troops - young and unknowing of their fate - one soldier simply holding a cigarette and the brilliant editing of the face of the soldier next to him coming into focus. And Beethoven's Symphony 7 Movement 2.......be still my heart!! I adore that piece to begin with, and to say it is a supremely perfect fit for this scene is an understatement! Colin Firth is unequivocally magnificent in this scene (haven't yet seen the entire film)...but from this segment alone I could determine that his Academy Award was 150% well-deserved!!!!

@@kimConrad4643 Pretty sure it's first season maybe like 5th epsiode (don't take my word on that though.) Klaus is having PTSD-esque flashbacks in the bath, and you can faintly hear helicopter noises. And then this music....

This was one of Leonard Bernstein's favorite's to conduct.
If you take the music out of this scene, it's not as good, beethoven's 7th makes the scene what it is. If you put in another piece like Beethoven 9, it doesn't work as well, the allegretto is the perfect choice.
@Badaktor I thought the same thing! Yes, Bale was great, but I felt Rush did a magnificent job with this role! I felt like I could feel everything he felt, every emotion.
I think that is a good method. If someone with a stammer can sing without missing a word or note then why shouldn’t it work the other way with someone reading something while listening to music. It’s amazing what the brain can do.

Taylor Walsh i think it was similar with Leonard Bernstein’s version of Beethoven Symphony No.7 - 2nd movement, way before the movie came out. Yes I agree, this is how it should be, slow and solemn. Beautifully done.

Indeed ! For example, Beethoven dedicated his 3rd Symphony to Napoleon for being the last guardian of the ideals of the french Revolution and Republic. After learning the same Napoleon had proclaimed himself emperor, he crossed out the dedication so forcefully he ripped the paper and broke his quill.

Monarchy in itself contradicts democracy. But many seemingly democratic countries such as the US or Britain have elements to them which contradicts the very label of democracy that's proudly shouted by civilians and politicians alike. That said, way better than authoritarian nonsense.
No form of government is without corruption. Whether it is a democracy, a monarchy, or as we have here in the states, a constitutional and representative republic.
Any one can function well, even a truly benevolent dictatorship, and autocracy could sound good on paper if it existed only to ensure an incompetent and self-serving bureaucracy of politicians doesn't trample the rights and the citizenry. The problem is that power corrupts.
