- Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner perform "Who Will Love Me As I Am?" from the musical Side Show. On The Rosie O'Donnell Show, October 27, 1997. Like my clips?? Check out my radio station, Sho-Toonz, at www.live365.com...
Neither of them are screeching and neither of them is flat ever...this amazing. They are acting this song as well as singing, the parts where they are screaming things is part of the emotion of it all, and quite honestly if this is bad, then I think its sickening and fierce. Both of their Belts are so clear and you can hear every single word they're saying. Plus the lyrics of this song are amazing. Do you know the story of the actual Hilton sisters? This music and everything is else is on point.
I know it’s been 11 years, but here is the Wikipedia article on the actual Hilton sisters:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisy_and_Violet_Hilton
Their performance is one of those you hear about no one being able to live up to. AMAZING
Everyone is praising Alice, but damn Emily is a real earth mother with that alto voice. so soulful. I love it. Belting that low is not as easy as everyone thinks, but she doesn't beautifully without sounding like she is trying to hard.
Everyone is riding Alice because of Next to Normal
That VOCAL RIFF at 2:17..... I’ve listened to it about a million times.. and Alice’s unbelievable belts and growls. My new favorite song.
Emily’s riff there is so fun!! I love it!
This performance is as close to perfection as it can ever get
I love the rich chocolatey alto of Emily Skinner
This performance is just beyond. They don't move a single limb.
Eyebrows on fleek.
After 20 years, I still can't help but love them.
One funny fact: in the musical, Violet is the one on the right. In real life, it was Daisy who was on the right side.
Ricardo Bauler in the musical violet “I am to your right as you watch our show” because she is actually in the left but when you are watching them it is flipped
I soooo miss you Rosie. You made us aware of such great talent. We live in the middle of nowhere, we have no way of knowing. Thanks........Bring me more joy Rosie, You are missed, so much!!!
Alice's belt is unreal
As a huge SIDE SHOW fan I was surprised I never saw this clip. Alice Ripley was a good as I have ever seen her in this clip
Like a fish plugged from the ocean
Tossed into a foreign stream
Always knew that I was different
Often fled into a dream
I ignored the raging currents
Right against the tide I swam
But I floated with the question
Who will love me as I am?
Like an odd exotic creature
On display inside a zoo
Hearing children asking questions
Makes me ask some questions too
Could we bend the laws of nature?
Could a lion love a lamb?
Who could see beyond this surface?
Who will love me as I am?
Who will ever call to say 'I love you'?
Send me flowers or a telegram?
Who will proudly stand beside me?
Who will love me as I am?
Like a clown who's tears cause laughter
Trapped inside the center ring
Even seeing smiling faces
I am lonely pondering
Who would want to join this madness?
Who would change my monogram?
Who will be part of my circus?
Who will live me as I am?
Who will ever call to say 'I love you'?
Send me flowers or a telegram?
Who could proudly stand beside me?
Who will love me as I am?
Who could proudly stand beside me?
Who will love me as I am?
Brought me to tears. AMAZING!
This is one of the most beautifulest songs and performance of a song that I have ever heard! Seeing these sisters sing this brought me to tears.
This song sums up every emotion I have been feeling recently. I love it. And the girls, sorry, ladies, do it beautifully.
omg... the unison sounds like a single voice - that is incredible!
I'm having visions of Next to Normal...
These two blow me away! This is such a gorgeous song!
Wonderful, underrated show. Alice is currently in Next to Normal, delivering the best performance I have ever seen on stage (of over 700 shows seen). Next to Normal is the most amazing, heartfelt show on Broadway, see it!
Alice Ripley’s expressions JUST WOW
Just an amazing performance I just keep playing it over and over Even after 16yrs
I love Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner.
I saw these 2 closing night of the show. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Incredible acting, singing and music. I cried my face off. ❤
Absolutely BRILLIANT!
This is why the revival lasted 5 minutes. ❤️
I swear if they brought back Skinner and Ripley for a revival of SideShow, it would sell like hotcakes. AND they'd get that joint Tony they SHOULDA had the first time. ;-)
Nothing about real life stays too long on Broadway. This musical was beautiful.
@@brianpelaccio4092 I still can’t believe how long CATS lasted 🤮
Chilling x 2. Yes...after 16 years...one of my faves.
The both of them together is like a piece of heaven!! I love Skinner's support and beautiful soulful voice that really carries the song and I love Alice's emotion, passion and awesome voice. They both did a great job here.
I CANNOT plead enough....If you want a real treat get their disc Duets. It is simply one of my all time favorites...duets from a number of Broadway musicals including Side Show
Thank you Rosie,,,, thank you for bringing this into my life. Thank you for these women with such talent, I would have never know if not for you.
amazing, I used to tape the Rosie O Donnel show and save the live and Broadway work. this, The Lion King and Lena Horne's last live stormy weather were my faves glad I found this thank you
I can't stop listening to this!!! :D they are both absolutely beautiful!
I get chills every time I hear this song.
Incredible pair, incredible musical.
@OverTheRainbow1904
Thankyou, i do like bothe voices but something about Emilys voice that just does it for me.
excellent post :D
Oh My Gosh! I absolutely love this song! I want sing it but I haven't been able to find any of the music yet. I can't believe this musical wasnt very famous! I love it! And I want to see it!!!!
Who would want to join this madness?
Who would change my monogram?
Who will be part of my circus?
Who will love me as I am?
Who will ever call to say I love you?
Send me flowers or a telegram?
Who could proudly stand beside me?
Who will love me as I am?
i feel they are the perfect duo for this musical. yay for them.
Like this is way too amazing. I love these women, they are bearing itall. I looked up the Hilton sisters after watching this, and man are these portraying, the tragic, hopeful and interesting lives of these two STRONG women. They portray that strength even whole singing this song that sounds hopeless. That's true acting!
i just love Emily's POWERFUL voice!
Terrific!
We're doing this show for my summer program and this is my favorite song so far. IT's so sweet and I can apply it to a few of my characters, as well as myself in some ways.
Alice Ripley rocks my life.
I have goosebumps.
Breathtaking performance.

this is fantasticccccccccccccc
Coming from someone currently putting on this production (me), this song is FAR from pitiful. It fits perfectly into the show. The lyrics are unparalleled and very meaningful. In "Could a lion love a lamb", the "lion" is Terry and the "lamb" is Daisy; it makes perfect sense. Would you give the composer more credit if I told you he also composed Dreamgirls? Because he did. Furthermore, you clearly don't have a good grasp on "Broadway". Broadway doesn't tone anything down. Everything is dramatic.
The BELTING
that was SO BEAUTIFUL
I ADORE them on this song.
i love this song. and alice ripley. they pwn.
BREATHTAKING!
Fantastic
Thanks for posting this. What a beautiful song, what a powerful performance.
beautiful. SICK!!!!
They are amazing and they sing so effortlessly.
I wish I'd discovered broadway stuff waaaay back.
I love these two women
Amazing.
Wow. This gets me choked up every single time, it's so fucking beautiful.
yes i have it under my favorites
Great song - thanks for posting!
Its incredible how they actually look like twins, it took me a second to figure out who was who. And then there's the community theatre production my brother was in with a Vietnamese Violet and an I don't know what but definitely not Asian of any kind MALE Daisy.
Both talented as hell, but really hard to suspend disbelief enough to buy that they're conjoined twins.
thay are amazing
i love alice's voice
I was 3 months old when this was aired :3
Their singing was clean AND safe. They wouldn't "screech" without knowing their limits. They're the professionals, not you. Get a life.
pure gold
Alice Ripley. SO fierce.
I love this. It almost feels like they're trying to out-do each other. But they're both equally amazing.
alice omg
I have to sing this in choir, and I've completely fallen in love:)
Their two voices together in Side Show is just amazing. Hnrgfh.
oh hot damn. so i knew the two were fricken amazing. i knew alice was fricken awesome and fierce, but this is beyoned fierce. like, words cannot describe. seriously. ah i'm still recovering from this guys.
Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just, woowwww.
I'm crying holy crud cakes
Emily Skinner GOT that ending!!!!!!! GAH! I love her so much :)
i don't know this show but i love alice ripley and this was beutiful
I just DIED! Amazing!
I would have seen it with them but I was exactly five months old when this happened...
@riney95 Yes, Alice Ripley starts the song, Emily Skinner is the one that sings second.
@jayiijay I'm gonna see it in january, can't wait!
that was amazing! I loved all of it, but at 2:16 Emily's rifff, OOOOH was that hot.
Praise praise praise =)
i think is because is a very different kind of play, and because of the role she played in next to normal, i think, is more about the interpretation than sounding good anyway is just my opinion. thats why i love her in both musicals =) have nice day!

so.... fierce!
they sang the **** out of this!
@xobreebreeox No i meant skinner, it just doesnt immediately start with her singing at 2:13. I mean u can tell which one is singin with 'soul' also. Thought that would help
Skinner at 2:13...soooo much soul
When I tell you all these years I thought Alice was singing the lower part. I should try paying attention more lol
To all of you who praise Emily and state her importance as an alto: Alice could easily hit those notes, too. Both are talented, but Alice's acting far surpasses that of Emily's, just as her voice does, too. I'm sorry, but Alice deserves to be applauded for her outstanding performance.
ahh, of course, with pleasureee.
WHOA
It's crazy how you can see a little bit of Diana in this performance by Alice Ripley...at least I think so.
Gotta give Rosie her props for getting these acts on her old show. I don't agree with her on a lot of things, but she has got some fantastic taste in musical...except Taboo.
What's your complaint about her in N2N?
Her voice does sound more strained in it, but it's hard to blame her she's gotten older, and I feel it works for the character. Diana is very stressed.
I wanted to share this to my facebook studio page - as I have students who are learning this song, but none of the share buttons will work for me. :-(
just copy the address then and paste on the wall of your student's, I assume, group.
Thank you.
@heidiemandcarles are you asking about the very last note? It's a d# or and e flat.
If you want more notes, please specify and I'll tell you.
Also, if you do a google search for "virtual keyboard" there's a website with a piano that plays the notes to hear which is which. It's very helpful in sitations like these :) (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links, so I don't want to get in trouble)
There should be a new Side Show revival. Starring Haven Burton and Leigh Ann Larkin.
