Not trying to downplay how amazing they are but if you watch them then you will see they trade off who is dancing and that helps them not get as tired during the whole dancing part Sutton on the other hand dances the whole time then has a very short time to catch her breath then sing a very long part with one breath Everyone in the cast in so incredible tho and I’m so sad I never got to see it live
Also while in an ensemble you can breathe without anyone noticing so they don’t have to hold their notes for as long as long as the stagger the breathing
Some of us don't have the lung capacity to hold that even WITH playing a bass instrument, running daily, singing in chorus, and being in musical theatre groups. It's just a really hecking long note.
Anyone else notice that in every really popular Broadway show Sutton is in, she gets these amazing, long tap breaks and then goes right into singing like it is nothing? Or is it just me? She is amazing!!!!
Here's Sutton speaking about this very performance : "This is so funny, again I was coming off a really bad cold, and I was so scared shitless already about playing Reno. I was on levaquin, this antibiotic that sometimes causes leg aches and leg pains-I don't take it anymore because of this day. So I was coming off bronchitis, and the very the first time I had every sung ‘Anything Goes’ and hit the high note without cracking on it was that press rehearsal when everyone had their video camera on it. I remember after the tap dance, I had massive leg cramps; so I had to go around talking to the press and I was hobbling and I had to take my shoes off. I thought I was falling apart. People talk to me more about that video than any other video. I remember when Kathleen Marshall started teaching it to us the little girl in me said, ‘My god, this is what I dreamed of my entire life. This is what I love about musical theatre.’ That day was the first time we put it up, and I think there’s something exciting about the first time you do something before anyone has any opinions on it-it’s really pure. So that rehearsal video is incredibly pure. We don't really know what we are doing and there’s an essence of joy and naiveté of what that number would be or what we were about to embark on. We were all just trying not to f up." www.broadwaybox.com/daily-scoop/sutton-foster-reacts-to-six-youtube-videos-from-her-past/
If she was taking levaquin it's a drug class called fluoroquinolones... one major side effect is that it can cause tendon ruptures! She's super lucky she didn't severely injure herself; that makes this performance even more amazing.
7:26 That explains the unmistakable emotion I see in her face. She just did 4 minutes and 10 seconds of a straight up complex dance routine and did it successfully. It always came off as more than "Whew, I can take a breather for a few seconds" and I didn't know why. Now I understand. Thanks!
+Sarah Paige Coleman Who knows? I think it's anyone's guess. I think we can all agree we're lucky it was recorded in good quality and put on TH-cam for us to see.
Sutton Foster is just amazing. And this clip is a fine example of the tremendous talent, from the star down to the chorus, that can be seen on Broadway. A case can certainly be made that Broadway is the home off some of the finest entertainers in the world.
Sutton Foster has been amazing since a little girl in middle school. She sang “somewhere over the rainbow” at our 8th grade talent show and blew us all away. Amazing talent. Had the pleasure of watching her grow into a star. Proud of you! Troy colt forever!
Elizabeth Daugherty By Hollywood do you mean the district in Los Angeles, or the film business in general? Do people who make films have no talent? We certainly work hard, but I'd be interested in your experience with film production - or with the area between Franklin, Hoover, Beverly, and Fairfax.
Jeff, ask yourself this: Does George Clooney have Foster's talent? How about Jennifer Aniston? Justin Bieber? The Kardashians? The two starlets from "Two Broke Girls". How about Bruce Jenner or whatever his new name is now? Anyone who regularly makes the covers of People magazine or any rag that coins who is and who isn't "Hollywood Elite". Do they have any of Sutton Foster's talent.? Can they pull off a number like Foster's "Anything Goes"? As long as those people are making the covers, they are representing Hollywood.
Let me make sure I understand your question, Elizabeth. When you say Foster's talent, do you mean singing and dancing specifically? I don't think any of the people you mentioned have experience with those particular skills (although Sarah Jessica Parker, John Travolta, Nick Jonas, Hugh Jackman, among others do). George Clooney has different talents, for sure. He's acted, directed, and produced some brilliant films. But I'm not going to defend the particular individuals you mentioned (certainly not the Kardashians, or the Jenners). I'm afraid I have a different distinction for the word "Hollywood." I don't agree that it is defined by People Magazine. I think the covers to which you refer are for the stupid, ignorant masses. I don't look at them, so I don't really know what is on them. I went to a dinner party several years ago, and happened to be seated next to Doris Roberts. We got to chatting about New York theatre, and Broadway (which she did extensively), and I asked her about "Everybody Loves Raymond" and what she thought about "plastic Hollywood." She turned to me and said (and I quote), "I surround myself with talented and exciting people wherever I go, and I suggest you do the same."

This is 2020 Covid. I just finished binge watching Younger & "discovered" Sutton Foster! I never knew she was this triple threat! Incredible singer & dancer as well as actress! Wish I could see a Broadway show now! Bravo to the entire cast!
If you want a healthy dose of Sutton Foster watch Shrek the Musical on Netflix! She played Fiona and was amazing of course. Also I've been listening to her album Take Me To The World and An Evening With Sutton Foster on spotify 😍 she's amazing
My favorite part is at the end when all the ensemble is applauding her and she shakes her head as if saying “it’s not a big deal, you guys did really well too” and then she goes to hug them! It just goes to show how humble she is and how willing to share the credit she is
Also, btw, they perform eight show per week. Believe me you'll be in tip-top shape to perform by the schedule they keep!!!! THEY'RE AWESOME....SO VERY TALENTED THESE BROADWAY HOOFERS!
How are their taps so clear? How is everyone in the chorus incredibly attractive? HOW DO THEY KEEP THEIR FORMATIONS SO TIGHT? HOW DOES SHE BREATHE? I have so many questions. (Also, the last 5 times I watched this video I exclusively watched it to see the little flirty glances between Sutton and the blonde she leans on early in the dance. It's SO cute.)
The breathing thing...there are a lot of great singers who naturally utilize the "nasal" part of their voice in singing - this produces the highest level of resonance while using the least amount of breath. You can hear this in some people's speaking voices (whether or not they use it to sing is up to them of course) such as Fran Drescher. It can be actually a very irritating speaking voice (case in point) but it's the same technique. It normally comes naturally to these people, so if they find their way to the stage, they've got it made. It can be taught, but only to a degree. If the larynx/resonating chambers (sinuses, hard palate, teeth, etc) are constructed just right, it just clicks and they naturally use it. As far as all the other stuff you asked, I can't really speak to that - I'm a voice coach, not a casting director lol
Everytime I think of tap dancing, I think of Debbie Reynolds from 'Singin' in the Rain' and the stories of bleeding feet.... And to think these people do it 8 times A WEEK.
I just love how humble Sutton is. She treats the rest of each cast like she’s her equal. She has no ego for being a gigantic star. Props to her. That’s one of the main reasons why I love her so much!
Saw Sutton Foster last night in "Anything Goes" in London, absolutely incredible talent and dare I say, at 46 can still sing and dance as though she were 26!
Sutton Foster is the all American girl next door. If I ever feel low, sad or depressed, I watch the rehearsal scene and leave humming with a lilt in my step and loving life. What an enormous talent. She has, as the French would say "That certain something ", and "A joy for life". Thank God there are still entertainers, or should I say artists, left like her. And Joel (the legend) Grey doesn't disappoint. He is like the finest aged wine that simply tastes magical. The entire cast is incredible. The Broadway musical remains an original American art form, and a gift to the world. Thank you Sutton and thank you Cole.

I've been watching her on Younger for the past two effing years and didn't even know she was a Broadway star...holy shit snacks! She's amazeballs! :-O Go, Liza!
+CatherineAnn923 I discovered her Broadway amazingness about 5 years ago after watching her in Bunheads for two years....She's incredible! One of Broadway's best
The Shoulder Shuffle- one of the great dance moves! And as Jonathan Groff says, "toes, toes, toes- ass, ass, ass" kudos to the choreographer! I still love my three boys-
This is on my “watch later” list and it will NEVER be removed!! I find it fascinating of the energy and stamina these dancers have for about 6 mins straight. Then getting back to the singing talent they all possess. Would have loved to have seen this in person but instead I’ll just keep watching this video.
She is an absolutely phenomenal performer. You can tell she knows what she is doing in the rehearsal, but I feel like each time after this and especially in the actual performances she grew more and more confident. Above all she's a really kind and genuine person.
I just love the rehearsal even more than the performance, because you can see what everyone looks like underneath the makeup. They clearly love this number.
I love all the hoot and hollering near the end. They're shouting through the pain! And still smiling. I've had to tap through a number before, it hurts like hell.
Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! Sutton Foster YOU are a STAR! These Broadway gypsies are Outstanding...So much talent on the stage! Kudos to a stupendous performance ( & that was just a rehearsal)! Makes me want to put on my tap shoes and "shuffle off to Buffalo!" Wow! Simply WONDERFUL!
Extremely jealous!!! She’ll be top notch in this for sure, even if she’s 10 years older now. If it weren’t for Covid restrictions, I’ll be crossing the pond in a heartbeat

Ok but mad props to that chorus who danced for 5 straight minutes and then jumped RIGHT into singing!!!!

And that ladies and gentlemen, is why am completely, totally, and unequivocably in love with Sutton Foster
After doing this 8 shows a week plus rehearsals, it would not be hard to stay in shape. Awesome!
Thanks to YT I have "discovered" so many talents in the last few years :-) It's simply wonderful!
+pandalover212516 She is. :) I hope next season she'll sing on Younger. Maybe to impress Josh or something, lol.
yes omg she was amazing in thoroughly modern!!
Me too!!!
The main thing I love about watching this is just the sheer enjoyment that is radiating from Sutton throughout the entire performance.
Toes toes toes
ASS ASS ASS
+N Crafts nice refrence
It doesn't matter how many times I watch this. It never gets old. It's always a wonderful surprise every time. Fabulous!
SO FREAKIN' TALENTED! I respect her so much. She's my inspiration, I LOVE YOU SUTTON FOSTER!!
Sutton Foster: *flawlessly tap dances for 6 minutes.*
Me: *trips in stable flat ground walking with no heels*
Here in 2021 after watching her perform this on UK tv for her upcoming run.
The Shoulder Shuffle- one of the great dance moves! And as Jonathan Groff says, "toes, toes, toes- ass, ass, ass" kudos to the choreographer! I still love my three boys-
How can she sing after THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I said the same thing after her "rat tap" routine in Shrek: The Musical
3:36 “Toes toes toes. Ass Ass Ass” 😂
LMAO #groffsauce will be proud
What I would do to learn this tap routine: ANYTHING! This is a tap dancer's dream as well as nightmare.
13 yrs ago and it’s fresh and fabulous as ever. Kudos.
I have watched this many times. And each time I am blown away by this dazzler.
The longest tap dance routine I've ever seen...
I give them props. :D
ERMAGHRERSH WHAT IS AIR?! Apparently Sutton Foster doesn't need it...
There's literally not a better preview that's ever been in this site, hallelujah
I dont get how this is even humanly possible
After hoofing it for 3 - 5 minutes, they all break out into song. Amazing 👏!
I love the energy of a live performance of anything--it's so authentic, no chances for a retake. To quote Yoda: "Do or do not. There is no try."
I love her so much. You can just tell shes always having a good time, theres a way she moves that's just so groovy and unique!
She’s amazing! The stamina that took is off the charts!!!
I love all the hoot and hollering near the end. They're shouting through the pain! And still smiling. I've had to tap through a number before, it hurts like hell.
this right here is why I love musical theater. What a dance sequence. Sutton Foster makes it look effortless.
She does...probably the mark of a truly gifted dancer
JUST- WOW. all of it. the music and show is amazing, the ensemble is incredible and sutton herself is just perfect. WOW.
i come here whenever i feel down… it always cheers me up 🤍
Oh my god. Even just watching that made me exhausted.
Bravo! Bravo!
Sutton is AMAZING!!! I watch this when I have a bad day just because she's such an awesome performer!!
Could anything be more perfect i mean honestly this is why she is one of my loves. Theatre as a whole never ceases to amaze me.
I love how nearly every comment on here is about jonathon groff
But why? I don't get it.
Elizabeth Frank There's a video where jonathon groff dances and sings anything goes, it's absolutely hilarious. Gimme a minute, I'll find a link.
i gave up on clever usernames
Who IS Jonathan Groff?
Thanks. Just saw your post.
Omg I just got a ticket to see her do this in London!!!! So excited! Casting announced today
Extremely jealous!!! She’ll be top notch in this for sure, even if she’s 10 years older now. If it weren’t for Covid restrictions, I’ll be crossing the pond in a heartbeat
Her stamina is amazing. What a talent. I've watched this too many times over the years but thanks for leaving it up.
Who was was watching Liza Miller on "Younger" series only to know Sutton Foster is this amazing!!! Two-time Tony award winning actress at its best ❤❤❤
She makes it look so effortless, it's astounding!
Ditto
How many views do you think are from Jonathan Groff?
I'm confused please explain
+Markus Mina Jonathan Groff has confessed to being a huge fan. If you search for it, you can find a video of him paying homage to this performance.
+Xantar ah that's awesome. Thanks
All of them
This is simply human perfection, on the part of everyone in the cast. I can't stop watching it.
I could just watch this forever!
What incredible talent and energy from Sutton Foster and from the whole ensemble group! That is why people still want to go to Broadway.
