    I've steamed reclaimed yarn by putting it in a steamer basket over a pot of boiling water for a couple minutes then laying hank to dry. Its a pretty efficient way to steam a bunch of hanks. Great episode as always. Thank you!

    Non superwash significantly warmer - scales allow for more air trapping.

    Oh my god, the image of Berlioz with the little red necktie killed me, the comparison is perfect 😂

      Someone on instagram said I had the same outfit as Berlioz so I HAD to include it in the video!

    I don't have the pattern for the hat, so I can only speculate about two possible solutions:
    1. If you want to make a tighter SSK, slip the second stitch purlwise instead of knitwise (I don't remember the explanation for why that works, but it does).
    2. If you're getting ladders with magic loop, don't tug on the first stitch on the needle, but do tug a bit on the second stitch, which will even everything out.
    The April Cardigan looks great on you, and I have also learned (stubbornly) to go up a needle size right from the beginning, just to make the swatch, and stop wasting time!
    I'm wondering if you might enjoy wearing a removable button or shawl pin of some kind on that shawl that's too thick to tie a knot in (Jul Designs make some interesting stuff in that category).

    the superwash process definitely affects the warmth! part of what makes wool so warm is that the scales help trap more air, thus creating more insulation. so stripping or "glueing down" the scales means it's not as lofty and not as warm. which is one of the reasons I like superwash merino for summer tops! I'm really curious to hear how you like the High Desert yarns, I love rambouillet and I've heard great things about Shaniko Wool Co! I'm attending a workshop with Jeanne Carver from Shaniko in April, I can't wait.

    • @neknits
      @neknits  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That makes total sense! I should use more SWM for summer tops since I've disliked working with more traditional summer fibers so much 😂 So far I'm really liking the High Desert, looking forward to updating everyone in the next video!

    @verversa 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Superwash is not as warm as virgin wools because no scales and less air trapping. That's part of the reason that people appreciate the Musselburgh pattern because most use SW yarn with it and it gives you 4 layers of fabric around your ears and does provide some warmth that way.

    I felt the same way about my alpaca garments previous until I washed them the second time. After the second wash, it was absolutely gorgeous and way less prickly. Just some of my history!

    Hey! I have the same problem with the laddering on decreases when I ssk, recently I watched a reel that recommended also knitting through the back loop on non-decrease rounds to keep the tension neat. I've only tried it once in a pair of socks but it looks SO much better. Hope this helps!

    For laddering, pull tighter on the second stitch on the new needle. This trick has fixed my issues, hope it helps!

      I'm so interested in how that works for people. I always do that and still, it ladders. Sometimes i feel like pulling the second stitch even makes my ladders worse 🤔 yet everyone says thats the thing to do.

    A lovely episode, as always 🙌As others are saying, superwash is colder than non-superwash, and the latter can felt slightly when being worn, which will make the hat more wind resistant.

    very nice job on the April! i think everyone needs a heathered gray cardi. yours fits perfectly, esp with the pleated trousers. as a short person w/ narrow shoulders, i love contiguous construction; i just finished Albiona M's TULC [also a saddle shoulder], highly recommend. i also knit a little tight, so when i read that Eliz Zimmerman pooh-poohed knitting worsted at 5 st/" on 8's, i was a little...miffed [is that still a word?]. btw, thx for putting in the time to add time stamps and links--super helpful 🙂. sry to hear abt your experience w/ that alpaca blend; i've used mariquita a couple times and found it very soft.

    Superwash yarns are cooler, and their processing involves toxic chemicals. Many also shed microplastics. While newer environmentally sound processes are being developed, I always look for GOTS or OEKO Tex certifications and support farm yarns, non-superwash yarns, and naturally died fibers.

    I knit my father-in-law a shawl collar cardigan in the KP High Desert Tweed. It has worn so nicely, minimal pilling, structure is great, blocked out so soft. It's a great yarn! Hope you have a good experience with it too.
