    Trading up his Dual Blades, Broadsword, Scythe, and Guns for a single one handed sword where each piece grants him powers of the 8 Phases? Slick!

    .hack was the proto Sword Art Online in that it was basically what SAO got some ideas from, but the major difference is that they treated everything dramatically, even things that didn't deserve it. The entirety of the first 4 games did deserve pretty much every moment, because of how the game emulated the feeling of MMOs and combined it with a creepypasta-esque story where you're tracking down a virus that put your friend into a coma on your first day of the game. The game you play degenerates as you go through the first four volumes, yet the MMO still goes on. You get these lore updates "outside" of the game in the news setting the stage and the kind of society your main character lives in, and when you defeat a Phase, it's like you angered technology itself because things start going haywire everywhere, mass blackouts and such, panic ensues. Though it may be dated, the atmosphere is on point.
    GU takes that and uses that tone to the point of ridiculousness to illustrate a kid growing up, and the people around him also develop. Though GU's writing can be somewhat awkward, I consider it rather good as it clearly illustrates Haseo's phases of growing up as you go on, he acts significantly differently throughout the volumes and has some of the most dramatic character growth i've seen in a character, and the voice acting with him is on point.

      Sorta, Technically the SAO manga's came out right before the //signs manga run. However hack focused more on world building and long term story telling while SAO just kinda stagnated with slow release's and pandering. Short of being a VR game, there is not much connection. While SAO in the first run everyone got trapped, in the .hack universe it was a pretty vary limited group that went comatose/trap in the game. Such as tsukasa, or Sora (Hasao). The main huge differences was the base story of why the world was created. in Hack it the game was meant to gather information to create a AI offspring of the creator, until the curator program went rogue. With
      SAO's Kayaba, that changed constantly without any logical sense. (it was pretty both sad and funny that the Abridge fixed most of the plot problems).

      @@nikushim6665 Actually, that's not quite right. The .Hack Project series started off in April 4th of 2002 with the release of the Signs anime, and the first of the four original games came out in June of the same year. What you are thinking of as the manga was the Legend of the Twilight miniseries that came out in July of 2002. Sword Art Online however came out on April 10th of 2002. So technically .Hack came out earlier by six days. However, considering the time it took for the two projects to get rolling, I think it would be fairer to say they came out at relatively the same time.

      SAO does have different focues in comparison to .Hack tho. For one thing, as symbolic as .Hack's writing is, none of it ever really extends to the villains. In SAO, they generally extend it's themes to all the characters

    • @bloodyidit4506
      @bloodyidit4506 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darknessknows1235 The focus in .Hack is less about villains and more about how people deal with a faceless calamity itself rather then having someone come in and screw things up because they just want to see people dead. The villains are far more realistic then SAO and attack on a grander scale. The corporation behind the company covers up the coma incidents, the virus itself was created by a visionary who wanted to create a sentient digital mind but could not secure the money or resources, so he used his status as a coder to secretly engage his project within an MMO to collect human data to assemble one. Pretty much everything after that was the AI acting on incomplete orders in fragments.
      After that, the MMO was perpetuated by a greedy, self-serving corporation who act as background villains.
      This massive, short-sighted fuck up is the ultimate villain putting people into comas left and right.
      SAO writes on the level of an average anime. Few modern game stories go THIS far in the lore (which was released as bonus anime episodes that focus on the outside world WITH the original games, it's a complete story, not a lore fix) to create a villain this esoteric. The themes of the story ARE the villains.

    • @darknessknows1235
      @darknessknows1235 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bloodyidit4506 the fact that .hack's villains are more the themes than anything else are subtle and make the actual antagonists suffer unless you look at things closely though. What .hack has in lore only makes up for the more lackluster aspects of not focusing on some of the why behind the villains. ie, the fact that AIDA is just barely better than the data eaters of Cyber Sleuthand Nyx of Persona 3 is bad writing considering what AIDA wants, and all the comments in game of what it seeks just feels like fluff to justify their existence when they feel tertiary, not even secondary, to the characters.
      SAO may go the simpler route, but they utilize their villains far better. Sakaki is the closest thing to a good villain with writing or realism and even then there's no real exploration of his character in interactions besides Atoli. With the exception of they're threat range, no villain in the Kite games is particularly well written either.

    I'm going to be completely honest.
    I would rather keep Xth Form forever than Job Extend to 5th Form. Xth Form Haseo just looks so much cooler.
    Edit 1/20/2024: Oh yeah, there's another reason I don't like 5th Form. The Xth Form is supposed to be a Job Extension that surpasses the bounds of The World, and as such the "Xth" felt like it was meant to symbolize the fact that it couldn't be defined within The World's systems. But with the introduction of 5th Form, it feels like they're degrading Xth Form into a "4th Form". I know it technically already was a 4th form, but now it actually feels like one rather than feeling like an abnormal form that technically shouldn't exist.
    And it's not even the introduction of the 5th Form itself that's the issue, it's the fact it's called *5th* Form. They could've given it a name that didn't degrade the Xth Form like "Zrd" (it sounds stupid imo but still) or something along those lines, but instead they just went "Well, it's extending off of Haseo's fourth form, so let's call it 5th Form. Never mind the fact that his fourth form was called Xth and not 4th."

      Yuri is certainly not the most diverse voice actor. He has one style of voice that he does well, and tends to fit an "archetype" of character. He sounds roughly the same in every game/anime he has ever appeared in. I recognize his voice instantly at this point and go "Oh, Yuri is in this. Nice."
      I'm not calling him bad by any means, mind you. He's great at what he does. He picked one style of voice to act with and does it very well. At this point he just sounds like "anime guy protagonist" to me.

    By the way, Haseo, Pi is Ender who sowed distrust among you and the original members of the Twilight Brigade. Yata is Naobi. You have ZERO reason to trust them. They LIED to you. As much as Ovan did.

    • @reyonXIII
      @reyonXIII 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ....Roots was a frigging mess, and yes, makes Yata and Pi look worse. Plus, it amounted to nothing you actually NEED to know in the main game, beyond MINOR background details.
      Personally, it's so full of character assassination regarding at least Shino, Haseo, Yata, and Pi, all to shill the ultimately worthless Tabby, that I'd rather not think about it when playing the games, which can exist perfectly without any knowledge of Roots. Not saying it didn't happen or the show doesn't exist, but the main games are better off you not taking EVERYTHING about Roots into consideration.

      @@sdbzfan1 Thanks. I forgot that Phyllo was the only, or at least one of the few undeniably good things from Roots, especially as far as helping your namesake is concerned. But that's why I prefer to think the events of Roots happened on broad strokes, but even then, it gives very slanderous portrayals of Haseo, Yata, Pi, Shino, and Ovan that make it harder to sympathise with them come game time

    • @themetus2190
      @themetus2190 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well truth to be told Haseo just went along with G.U he didn't always appreciate what G.U did and even criticized Yata for G.U's actions.But if i had to make sense out of plot of Roots I would say that Pi and Yata were trying to awaken Skeith forcefully but Haseo's mind wasn't ready for Skeith at that time Shino and Ovan were more cruel in my opinion though Ovan was the one who commanded Shino to look after Haseo Both Ovan and Shino wanted to play him like puppet when he first joined to guild Worst thing was that Shino showed more affection towards Ovan So her love for Haseo might be lie Perhaps she looked after Haseo only to gain Ovan's affection this is not certain but direction of events points this possiblity
      Roots has its moments and it's fails I really liked Forest of Death scenes with Haseo and Taihaku as they discovered Harald but on the other hand you also have GU sequel breaking moments but Roots doesn't ruin G.U for me to be honest it's just extra media of dot hack which is not best but definitely not worst for me
