Geological explanation of absence of volcanic activity in Himalaya and presence of volcanoes in Andaman Island area in Bay of Bengal :- Himalaya are formed due to collision of Indian continental plate with the Chinese plate. So their hights are still increasing. Eg. Present altitude of Mt. Everest is 8850 metres. In 1957, it's altitude was 8848 metres, an increase of more than 2 metres in just 50 years (when it was first climbed by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary). As the plates are pushing against each other, Himalaya is a Fold mountain and do not have volcanic activity. Volcanic activity in Andamans is due to splitting of Indo-Australian Plate from the Burmese Microplate i.e away from each other. This causes Splitting leading to flow of Magma or lava from the Earth's Mantle through faults and fissures in Earth's crust causing volcanoes. This is also the reason behind volcanoes in Indonesia (Country with maximum numbers of volcanoes). In geology it is called" line of fire" which extends from Andaman and Nicobar islands to Indonesia, Papua and other countries in the region. I have tried to Simplify the explanation as far as possible. Geological processes like mountain formation are very complicated. Hope this helps. - Mr. D Chaudhuri, (Geologist)
