    Aside from pulling the hood one day where it was 100 degrees, the mustang was largely flawless.
    literally from 10 test miles to immediately hitting the road for the power tour 2000 mile long haul - expected to have a lot of breakdowns, but in the end all we ended up doing was putting gas in the tank and our foot on the gas pedal.

      Should you cut enough threads off the intake corner bolts to keep them from rusting up and getting stuck? or perhaps drill out the threads and put a nut on the back? or use a slightly smaller, perhaps metric, bolt and nut? any of which should prevent breaking off rusty bolts when trying to remove them? Things really should be designed to make this impossible no matter how rusty something gets, perhaps by making the bolt stronger than the strongest rust ever measured.

      If you keep more tools in the back of your car, such as jump pack and oil pump driver, you will have better mud traction, and snow traction in winter. Unlike me with my FWD Metro 1 liter.

    Grandpa always said that anyone can work on a Chevy, but it takes brains to work on a Ford 😉
    With that said, something I figured out on my 460. When you drop the oilpump rod out of the distributor, take a plastic drinking straw, slightly bigger than the rod, put some gasket sealant in one end and slide it over the rod, which will be down there a ways, and slowly pull it out. It beat the hell out of pulling the pan and pump. Works great.

    Luke - this was really enjoyable and informative. Mechanical concepts that don't cause my eyes to glaze over, vital assembly advice (lessons you learned by screwing shit up I'm thinking) - all done in circumstances and with tools the average wrencher would have. Real world hot rodding!

    I would say that the distributor upgrade was DEFINITELY a success! I love all fox Mustangs but these earlier ones have been really growing on me lately! Compared to the 1986 up they are much simpler and cleaner looking and even a few pounds lighter

    I bought my first car when i was 15. it was a Maroon (same as yours) 1982 Mustang GT 5.0 HO. I got a ticket the day I got my license. 43mph in a 25mph. That car changed my life. Coolest car at the school. I wish I had the knowledge and interest in Cars back then as I do today. Thanks for the video. It brought me back..

    I had a 351W in a 1981 Tbird (foxbody.) This video brought back a lot of memories for me. One trick I had on that engine was that I added a hardened grade 8 washer under the adjuster nut so that I could set the preload precisely, and used a grade 8 washer on top to lock the valvetrain. I also had comp cams valve springs matched to a Magnum 270 cam and what were supposed to be anti-pump up lifters (I dunno, a friend that raced gave them to me, no verification.) When I transferred everything to a clean 302 shortblock, that combo would rev to the moon; with the stupid highway gears, I regularly hit 85mph in first. Interestingly, I learned a lot of the tricks from articles written by Steve Dulcich, and David Frieberger back in the print days.

      I had an 82 Thunderbird with a 351 and a C-6 transmission. When I rebuilt the engine I installed a roller cam with roller rockers. The car looked brand new on the outside. You want to talk about a sleeper that car was evil. Had her for 5 years and I was never beat by anyone!!!

      @@davelowets can’t disagree. Probably would have done decent on 1/2 mile events where it had time to wind up, but was a great cruiser. I have one of the original draggy type devices and I think it 1/4rd in the low 15s or high 14s. Only put an 1800 stall converter in it; with a 2800 and 3.73s it mind have done decent on the strip.

      @@kstricl Not unless you had a push vehicle, like they do in land speed racing. You're just wasting time and efficiency unless you can keep the engine in its peak powerband for as long as possible. The more gears, the better. Even the faster land speed cars have 7-8 speed transmissions in them. I'm surprised your transmission never caught fire from overloading the shit out of the converter, stalling it up for so long, trying to hit 85 in first gear. You're lucky the engine didn't make a whole lot of torque, or it WOULD have.

      @@davelowets It felt decent through a wide chunk of the RPM band, and by ear and calculation, it was pulling around 7800 rpm. Not that it necessarily made power through the whole band, but around 2500-3000 it started to really pull. If you put'er into 2nd at around 6000-6500 you could keep'er in the power. The Magnum 270 was rated to make power from 1800-5800 rpm in that application, and seemed to bear out.
      Generally, it was just a fun driver, never was going to set records in it though.

    I was born in 1964 so the 70's cars to me are so cool. My first cars were all 70's models, Ive seen Mavrics with the 302 Boss, what ever that was. and I remember making constant adjustments to everything. I love that you mostly drive and sometimes sell your cars. Waking them up and just putting them back to death or parts kills me. I love what you do. I love that Maveric!

    Awesome video on the 351W! I have the same engine installed on my '86 Bronco that my son purchased last year. When I did the leak down test on cyl. 7 and 8 I read the same leaked pressure (44%) no matter how I turned the crankshaft. I need to take the valve covers off and inspect.. This truck had not been started for 12 years... Thank you for posting this detailed video!

    You said the pushrod is kind of bent. Take the pushrod and use high speed electric drill. Put the pushrod and clamp it with drill chuck. and running the drill high RPM and Very easily to tell if it is bent or not. The true straightness is use your eyes and running the drill. Thanks for good job in troubleshooting.

    If you're assembling an engine, something mechanics at least used to do was use Vaseline as assembly lube. It's just pure petroleum jelly so it reacts with very little if anything. It's also cheap, never goes bad, and like on my gramophone was used for lubricant.

    @1:07:40 with that magic, I would say you were destined to work on Fords😅; very true, that distributor can be pesky. You and Derrick have some of the best videos of this genre, hands down. That’s my opinion. Thanks man…being I’m watching this slightly after midnight, think I’ll mosey down to the shop and tune the carbs and set timing on the corvair since I just cleaned up the fuel system. When I got the car couple months ago from a friend, by the looks of the straight coffee color of the gas, it’s probably hasn’t been run in 30 yrs lol. Fits the narrative since it has 27k miles and the original tires from 1963 🤯. So far I’ve managed to put 150 miles or so on it getting to tag and seeing a couple buddies. Almost road trip ready😂

    I'd have to agree that the Pertronix ignition is a good upgrade though. Your idea of throwing out the worthless intake manifold end seals, and using sealant instead, and, using all thread to align the intake manifold, is very good advice.

    there is a small plastic radiator top air cover you need if you wanted..and that powersteering whine i use tranny fluid in them with some motor oil makes it alot better 😀

    I saw the first video in this series but didn't catch the rest. Nice to see the whole thing and find out how well Power Tour went for this old 'Stang. BTW it doesn't seem too old to me. I was there when it came out and if you are like me, you will find that periods of time seem to become shorter snd shorter as you age!

    Great movie Luke. Best part was the FO for Ford 351.
    I could never figure out why the cylinders were ordered as Ford does.
    The crank and rods from front to back should be 1 - 8. That makes sense to me.
    Don't know how Ford figured out differently from the rest of the world.

    Although not the best for all out performance, those valvetrains are fairly durable for pedestrian car use. I have pulled a lot of them apart and most problems I encountered was from someone that didn't know what they were doing and mismatched parts or not understood timing and had it wrong.

    Ford outdid themselves with the Fox body 5.0 Mustangs , the Fox body style is still my all time 2nd favorite car design right behind the 1969 American Motors AMX 390 dual carb mid block that was the only car that could beat the Corvette at the track.

    Just amazing!
    This whole job has been a great trip for a 65 year old wanna be mechanically inclined dude that is too scared to try.
    But everything Luke, that you walked us through, would be all I would need to take a chance with my best friend whom is 'gung ho' on helping me on some projects that I may face with my 2003 4.7 V8 Toyota Tundra if ever I need to replace the starter. Those in the know are aware in Toyota's infinite wisdom this '8 cylinder' 2UZ-FE has the starter located under the intake manifold! Where I reside there are rodents trying to nest within my engine compartment and if they go after any of the wires in that space, and why wouldn't they, I'm up a creek without a starter. I do use a product that has a mint oil base but it must be applied consistantly to ward off the threat. Also I use a solution of Irish Spring soap to deter the vermin. But just today after some neglect in proactive application I found rodent droppings on top of the intake manifold.
    There was a vlog of of crazy scenario wherein a rodent had nested iinside a Tundra's timing chain cover on one of the V8's banks and that rodent got death by ignition. The remains of said rodent caused the timing chain to jump a few cogs and of course that in turn made for a ratty running engine.
    Chasing down the poor engine performance was a lesson in superfurlous mechanics whence the real problem was finally exposed, much to the surprise of everyone watching this particular vlog.
    I really am wishing I had youth on my side at this time v poor health as I'd be all in on doing some of this work that you do but apparently being young doesn't equate to working sans a difficulty and a back out of whack, as noted when you hobbled (LOL) over to your Black Magic to retieve that carburator from the Maverick storage bin.
    Thanks for the time involved in the edit and great upload, another thing a 65 year old unsavy techie would aspire to if not of a mind I won't be able to do the time and take the effort you put forth.
    I also view Dylan and Kevin/Mook vlogs for similar fanatical reasons, I'm a wanna be gear head.

    I feel like the 351 should have more power but it still rips pretty good I would say it looks like it running close to 250 hp if the timing is right and we’ll uncle Luke’s a pro so I’d say yep

    Well... I'd have to disagree about Duraspark ignition. True, the firing time is not great, and the connections are not good, but the adjustability of the distributor is quick and easy. The internal allen head of the vacuum advance makes adjustment easy, and the square holes in the breaker plate makes adjusting the springs a breeze too. I know certain modules are not very reliable, but they do have some redeeming qualities - that is, for example, the stepped retard module (yellow grommet) is great for turbo engines, and it is more reliable too. The later brown grommet modules are not only reliable, they can be used with the electronic timing function of aftermarket fuel injection systems. So... what the heck - my two cents worth.

      Wives tale - if you prime the oiling system till oil comes out all the rockers, it’s good to go.
      Oiling the lifters is what people do who like to dry fire an engine, which isn’t something I’d ever do.

    The best motor is the 1 between a girls legs it bleeds once a month to keep it clean, it fits any piston size and self lubricating. Since the beginning of time it's a money maker too! ACDC knows about keepn the motor clean and mean. Haha. Keep up the good wrk!

    I had a lunati lifter do that as well. On a 460. I thought the cam lobe was rounded off but when I took it apart the bottom of the lifter was fine & the cam was fine. But the ring that holds the plunger was broken in half? I coulda bought a lifter & kept going?

    I suspect the lifter damage and the pushrods out of place were caused by lifter pump-up at higher RPM because of insufficient valve spring pressure. Also, lifters stuck in the bores is most times caused by build-up of varnish on the lifters below the bore.

      No idea what happened, I assume floated lifters although the stuck in the bore is especially odd since, even though parked for a long time, lifters were essentially brand new and clean

      It’s a 1984, so carbed from the factory.
      Originally with a very low performance 302 due to the 84 emissions and smog heads of that era

    The early 302 and 351 Fords have the exact same firing pattern as a Chevy small block. If you pretemd the ford motor's cylinders are numbered the same as a chevy, the firing order will be the same as the typical G.M. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2..... And vice versa with the ford firing order on a Chevy.

    My 1979 mercury capri rs turbo has run a 351w since 1988 it also has a clevelend set for as well the big problem on both motors is headers they are kinda spendy

    I was reading a form answer recently and read that Rotella doesn't use zinc anymore supposed to have been reformulated this person said they got the information from a rep I've heard this a few times now from different people but don't have anything with flat tappet cams so I didn't research it any further just a heads up in case it's true.
