Not sure why he does it, but for me, i can't really tie on a tippet ring or microswivel directly to the flyline, so nail knot to the flyline - then tippet ring for your tippet material

I've been using Tenkara and Keiryu rods for 13 years . Starting doing this about 5 years ago. Works great for this style of fishing.
