Pretty much hate how "sketch" books are shown on social media platforms, they are not remotely realistic. Sketchbooks are meant to be a record of you trying new things of pushing your art. A record of your progress. These people who post the full colored and inked drawings are not showing you a real sketch book. They are showing off their portfolios.
Yep, If I need help drawing something I use the term tutorial in my searches now in stead of How to draw because with the later you get a lot of these time lapse and sketchbook portfolios. With the "Tutorial" you get more artist using construction lines and working slower so it's easier to follow.
I completely agree with this, it seriously encourages wrong habits. Too many newer artists or even less known experienced artists can feel like this is actually how sketchbooks look. When in reality they are like 99% wtf doodles and studies lol. I had a period of time where I couldn't even draw often because I felt like every single one had to be perfect ! It was terrible
Hey man. I've been drawing for 14 years, and let me tell you, you're doing what I wish I did when I was starting. Starting by drawing what you love, then that will naturally lead you to want to learn fundamentals, you go back and try again, rinse, repeat. The mileage you're getting in 3 months is insane, and I really hope you keep going! Keep having fun, keep laughing with your past self with past work, and keep being proud of what you make. i love how he went from showing us drawings that a 4th grader could make, to later on calling some really good art “just okay”. really shows how much progress he’s made and potential he sees👏🏾 keep it up

As a person who’s been drawing for 7 ish years,- I’d say you’re on the right path! I think the most important aspect of learning how to draw, isn’t to wait for the “moment” till you’re “good”- it’s to actively enjoy the process of drawing. This is what keeps you going honestly. It’s important to find a balance between practicing and learning new things in art, but to also draw stuff that’s just.. fun! Keep drawing and keep having fun :) you’re doing great!
This is honestly great to see! You're the first youtuber I've seen that *actually* starts as a beginner! I'll drop a subscribe! Also, keep in mind that character design is a completely separate skill from drawing! A person can genuinely be a terrible artist but a terrific character designer, so if you want to get better at making your own characters, I'd recommend starting with learning shape language and silhouette character designs. Keep up the great work!!

I do character design and vtuber model creation with my partner, she's an excellent artist but struggles with design whereas I have no problems with design but am definitely not as talanted as her. They're largely separate skills that you train in very different ways. Drawing really is just practice and observation to improve, I'd argue design is more reliant on art theory and to an extent marketing knowledge

To see another beginner artist’s sketch book was so soothing. It gave me courage that other people are going through this process too. I guess we just have to keep our focus on being able to draw whatever we want one day

I’ve genuinely been binging beginner artist sketchbook tours like this all night ‘cuz it’s just so much fun to see how everyone improves. You might feel like you still suck, but the improvement is so great, and it’s amazing we can all make this work in our own ways despite how lost you can feel with all these great examples and with how much information is available and scattered across the internet in no particular order
Yeah it's super overwhelming as a beginner but doing your best not to compare yourself to others and having fun with it is they key to not go insane (this plan works only sometimes lol)

I’m in the same boat, really wanted to learn how to draw and design my own characters so I started 3 weeks ago, can definitely relate to learning something new and then thinking “wow that’s cool I’ll try drawing a character from my imagination now” only for it to not look good at all haha. I am trying to learn how to draw as a person who had some artistic talent in other things that aren't visual media (music, theater). Not sure what your background is but it's really, really encouraging for me to see a person be candid and show all the beginner sketches, express frustration, and see steady improvement (and knowing improvement is not linear and drawing/illustration is a set of skills, not a single skill) so, thanks for making and sharing.
you are basically speedrunning my teen years xD drawing a few studies - and the just drawing fanart xD edit: you'll come to realise just how much your sketchbooks are like diaris.. diary.. diaries . the drawings of your room, how you maybe moved stuff around or the clothes you were wearing in the POV shots are now permanetly marked down. and remembering feelings of frustration or joy from every single page. I love sketchbooks
Love to see stuff like this, they bright up my day! On a side note, while i draw only out of boredome while studying, I realized I became pretty good in drawing body an muscle as a side effect of my bodybuilding hobby. I guess that when you get used to see so many times somethig, you also become a little better at drawing it.
the best tip i got in regards of sketchbooks is just draw whatever you feel like drawing, and avoid buying expensive ones, and also keep the sketchbooks near you
This is so encouraging! Subscribed! I'm trying to learn to draw and this felt a lot more valuable than looking at flip throughs from people miles ahead of my ability. It's still better than I can do but it doesn't feel completely unachievable and the progress is clear to see! Gives me some hope for myself 🤞🏾

Honestly thats great progress! This also makes me realize how far I have come in my art journey I have went through EVERY stage you have mentionted and further beyond since I am drawing for abt 4 years now. I myself constructed a little "training course" from my knowlege abt. Drawing Ive gathered through out the years and by going through endless youtube Videos of how we actually learn things. Here is my training shedule for figure and anatomy sketches: Figure Drawing: 1 set deep analysis (Here you basically just stare at the reference for a minute and try to find general shapes in it to which you can simplify it) 2 min figure drawing (Draw as quick as possible and only try to catch the gesture of the pose and simplify as much as possible) 1 min break 3 min draw from memory (Draw the same thing but from memory) Here you realize what you know and what you dont know yet abt anatomy it will look fucked up in the beginning but thats ok.) 4 min figure drawing You draw the same thing again but now wirh the knowlege where you failed the last time. Now you focus on these areas) 1 min break 8 min analysis in shapes Now you break your final deawing down in cubes and basic cylinders) 19 min Ps: its a bit more complicated than that but thats abt as much as I can boil it down for a comment section. Furthermore it is important to do LOTS of quick drawings trying to simplify as much as possible 3x 1 min figure drawing Mit 30 sek pause 5min 24 min figure Training daily If you have any further questions ask me✌️

I started looking around for good art inspiration back in May to get myself to finally jump into the deep end and start drawing again, and came across your channel. Watched your video about drawing the same character (Luffy) and adored the passion behind your work, bit the bullet and started sketching/doodling on printer paper at work. My little brother came by around August and gifted me my first sketchbook after he saw my stack of printer paper doodles at home haha. I'm still working on completing my first sketchbook, but I completely feel the "I seem to have got this idea of this, what characters can I create now?" after only practicing for a few weeks and then months, and then absolutely BUTCHER the Loomis Method and then it gets all wonky. But I still love and adore the process of learning how to draw again, as well as the ambition I have for myself and what I want to create for my own animations as well :) 10/10 will be joining you on your journey and will be admiring our process and lessons along the way!
Been picking art back up again since having dropped it quite a while ago, and having searched for "month of art practice" came your channel. Your videos are quite nice and have even provided me some insight that I've never heard. Besides that, your development in merely three months is exceptional. It truly shows as a testament to what dedication, learning, practice, and reflection provides. I am looking forward to seeing how your skill develops in the next month, and in a year from now. Thank you for posting your beginner's journey, it gives insight that a masters' tutorial can't replicate.

When I like something, I get my hands dirty, so I want to explore as much of art as I can - different genres, styles, etc.. I will try to continue growing just as much as you are, one step at a time.

Don't compare yourself then! (much easier said than done I know) This isn't talked about a lot, but it takes a lot of effort to train yourself to be dedicated at a level that you want. Some people are just born being super hard workers but I think most people, including me, have to teach themselves how to be dedicated. What isn't shown in this video is the process I have to go through to be motivated! You can work at being super dedicated too - just takes some training.
I started drawing in May as well, and this video is so accurate to how I feel. It also encouraged me to actually study some things (cough hands cough), which I have been actively avoiding.
Wowzer, I've been really wanting to get into drawing but I've doubted my self every time I think about starting, this video really inspired me to actually have a go at it. Please don't give up.
You have done a really good job for three months. I also want to be able to draw anything my mind can imagine and I took an online course to learn fundamentals. Even if sometime i get frustrated for not to be able to achieve my goal yet , I continue to learn and enjoy drawing some basic stuff. I hope that you will achieve your goal and then both of us finally be able to draw by imagination

The pen thing was the thing that really helped me so much not a lot of new artist decide to do pen drawings but it helps so much I could never draw a straight line not because I sucked I just couldn’t trust myself to draw a straight line but the pen made me just draw and give up cause I couldn’t fix it but in the end I could draw a straight line and it helped immensely
I've been challenging myself to do 100 days of gesture drawing. I'm up to day 75 as of yesterday. It really helps to do one concept for a long time, and I would definitely suggest it since getting good enough at gesture that the proportions and storytelling comes naturally would really help your animation goal. I don't know how you could turn that into good TH-cam content but I got my inspiration from a fitness TH-camr Uce Gang who's doing 100 weeks of going to the gym. Anyway you're doing great, there are a lot of tutorials methods etc...but the thing I'm realizing is that the most important thing is just drawing miles and miles of lines on paper over a very long time.
Funny admission... I flipped from a drawing tutorial to your video and thought "is this guy having a stroke? His words are so drawn out and..... Oh im still on .75% speed" lol. Glad you didnt have a stroke 🙂
OH MY GOSH!!! How did I not notice this video?? :( Anyway, I've been doing my own rendition of drawing One Piece everyday and I'm making progress! I am currently learning cross hatching and shading so I can try to create manga styled art. I'm also in the process of learning human anatomy (maybe foreshortening too) and I'm progressing really well. I've learned way tooo much information in such a short amount of time which is INSANE! Though one thing is, is that I should probably draw still life even if it doesn't help much. But, we all have so much to go, and that's what makes this fun! Keep going. :] (This is a literal hidden Gem once again!)

Hi, I’m a beginner as well and it’s awesome to know we’re not alone on this journey through art, thanks for sharing with us. Also, I might be wrong (again, I’m also a beginner), but when you said you can’t draw 5 vanishing points perspective on your bedroom POV sketch, looking at the drawing, it seemed a little bit unnecessary since it’s was a simple 2 point perspective ( a bedroom isn’t even tall enough to put a third vanishing point). I highly recommend the David Finch’s videos about perspective, he makes it so easy to understand (I don’t like the grid construction tho😂). Thanks again, and awesome evolution!!
Good job man. I’m a creative. I write short stories, attempted books, and have done some graphic design for authors. I started thinking I’d like to draw. I want to do comedy graphic novels in the vein of Mr. Pickles, Brickleberry, etc. Adult Swim stuff…or just basic chapter books with lots of animation for adults. No one reads books anymore really, and I got frustrated with how limited I would be with photoshop and gimp to make things. I started hiring artists, but they can never capture my vision. I’m a very visual person. So, I’m starting my art journey. I just want to draw cartoons. I didn’t need motivation, because I’m enjoying drawing very much (it’s only been a week…my drawings still suck, but I’m seeing very vast improvements compared to where I was when I didn’t try). Thanks for the extra push and honesty.

This looks amazing! I love going back to my old sketch books and seeing how much I've grown as an artist and how much more I need to do. One thing I would recommend with your gestures or to practice anatomy for your character, is to break things down more in to shapes. Circles, triangles, and rectangles, will go really far with learning how self teach anatomy. But this is awesome! I can't wait to see more!
Hey Jake, I just want to say it's actually a little surprising how invested I am on your art journey. I just checked at what date you upload this video, and I was disappointed to learn that it had been only a few days from now. I was hoping to possibly find some new content to binge, but unfortunately not. Thank you for making this video, as an artist, it's always interesting seeing what beginners are discovering. Also, my guess as to why you couldn't draw an original character after 'practicing', was probably because you didn't actually practice. To make an original character, you need to practice gesture, yes, but you also need to practice character design. Shape design. Creating characters based off of prompts, and studying characters made by other artists. Eventually, you'll also need to learn how to draw clothing folds, and you will need to study lots of different clothing styles, definitely relying on pinterest or any other software that offers a constant source of inspirations and ideas. You never practiced any of these in the video, so I understand why your characters came out a bit average. It might also help to know what character you want to draw beforehand; Is your character evil? Draw them a little pointier. Etc. You need to know your character in order to create an unique character design.

@@jakeonart Hey, it's okay, making an youtube channel isn't easy, so take it at your own pace. I don't want to come across as demanding, it's just that your content was so good, I wanted to see more of it. I work a lot with traditional art, and I'd say I'm an intermediate artist. Some stuff I make comes out nicely, others, not so much. I'm getting more into digital art recently, but I think I'm decent on both mediums. I'd share my deviantart but honestly, it's embarrassing atm, as I haven't uploaded anything fresh for a while, and there are a lot of older drawings there. I think the most important part of learning art is knowing what to learn in the first place, since there are a lot of steps. I've been drawing for some years, mostly alternating between passive, hobby drawing, and intensive study. I didn't take it very seriously until recently, but since I'm familiar with art, I know a lot of what my own art lacks and how I can improve it. So, if you want to improve fast, try to familiarize yourself with other fundamentals. Learn from the masters. Really, go wild, since there are a lot of things to discover, some more fun than others.

I'm not great at drawing and I'm kind of stuck with doing ok when looking at references but badly when not using any reference, I found a few good ways to make my own characters and still be able to use references the one I use the most is coming up with a list of stuff about a character how I want them to look and then putting it into an ai art generator and then drawing it myself using that as a reference and fixing the ai glitchyness along the way, the second way is just getting references for individual bits and pieces, like one for pose another for a hair style, one for clothing parts ect.

Also if you’re looking for a good TH-cam channel is study anything art related, I’d highly recommend The Art Aaron of Blaise’s channel! His TH-cam channel is basically free art college and I love it :)
Something to push that confidence, I advise you draw with a bic pen. And make those construction lines. Bic pens are good for drawing since you can make very light lines and the more you tilt the lighter the lines.
your first video inspired me to finally start drawing since it's been a dream since I was younger to be able and make a comic. So thank you 😁 But I do have a question, how long per day do you try and spend drawing? I've been doing like 30 minutes on average, but it feels like it's not enough.

I am trying to learn how to draw as a person who had some artistic talent in other things that aren't visual media (music, theater). Not sure what your background is but it's really, really encouraging for me to see a person be candid and show all the beginner sketches, express frustration, and see steady improvement (and knowing improvement is not linear and drawing/illustration is a set of skills, not a single skill) so, thanks for making and sharing.

On a side note, while i draw only out of boredome while studying, I realized I became pretty good in drawing body an muscle as a side effect of my bodybuilding hobby.
I guess that when you get used to see so many times somethig, you also become a little better at drawing it.

the best tip i got in regards of sketchbooks is just draw whatever you feel like drawing, and avoid buying expensive ones, and also keep the sketchbooks near you

I'm trying to learn to draw and this felt a lot more valuable than looking at flip throughs from people miles ahead of my ability. It's still better than I can do but it doesn't feel completely unachievable and the progress is clear to see! Gives me some hope for myself 🤞🏾

Honestly thats great progress! This also makes me realize how far I have come in my art journey I have went through EVERY stage you have mentionted and further beyond since I am drawing for abt 4 years now. I myself constructed a little "training course" from my knowlege abt. Drawing Ive gathered through out the years and by going through endless youtube Videos of how we actually learn things. Here is my training shedule for figure and anatomy sketches:
Figure Drawing:
1 set deep analysis
(Here you basically just stare at the reference for a minute and try to find general shapes in it to which you can simplify it)
2 min figure drawing
(Draw as quick as possible and only try to catch the gesture of the pose and simplify as much as possible)
1 min break
3 min draw from memory
(Draw the same thing but from memory)
Here you realize what you know and what you dont know yet abt anatomy it will look fucked up in the beginning but thats ok.)
4 min figure drawing
You draw the same thing again but now wirh the knowlege where you failed the last time. Now you focus on these areas)
1 min break
8 min analysis in shapes
Now you break your final deawing down in cubes and basic cylinders)
19 min
Ps: its a bit more complicated than that but thats abt as much as I can boil it down for a comment section.
Furthermore it is important to do LOTS of quick drawings trying to simplify as much as possible
3x 1 min figure drawing
Mit 30 sek pause
5min
24 min figure Training daily

This is awesome!!!! If you're still into drawing animation (which your actually really good at), I would highly recommend Blue Lock. I feel like you would like it, and it has some epic action frames that might be fun to draw!

I started looking around for good art inspiration back in May to get myself to finally jump into the deep end and start drawing again, and came across your channel. Watched your video about drawing the same character (Luffy) and adored the passion behind your work, bit the bullet and started sketching/doodling on printer paper at work. My little brother came by around August and gifted me my first sketchbook after he saw my stack of printer paper doodles at home haha.
I'm still working on completing my first sketchbook, but I completely feel the "I seem to have got this idea of this, what characters can I create now?" after only practicing for a few weeks and then months, and then absolutely BUTCHER the Loomis Method and then it gets all wonky. But I still love and adore the process of learning how to draw again, as well as the ambition I have for myself and what I want to create for my own animations as well :)
10/10 will be joining you on your journey and will be admiring our process and lessons along the way!

@@jakeonart Focusing on anime style art right now, but I would like to push into other mediums like realism and such. When I like something, I get my hands dirty, so I want to explore as much of art as I can - different genres, styles, etc..

I'm envious of your dedication to art. You put so much effort into it, and it shows. I feel like I can't compare myself to this.
Don't compare yourself then! (much easier said than done I know) This isn't talked about a lot, but it takes a lot of effort to train yourself to be dedicated at a level that you want. Some people are just born being super hard workers but I think most people, including me, have to teach themselves how to be dedicated. What isn't shown in this video is the process I have to go through to be motivated! You can work at being super dedicated too - just takes some training.

I started drawing in May as well, and this video is so accurate to how I feel. It also encouraged me to actually study some things (cough hands cough), which I have been actively avoiding.
Yeah sometimes we just gotta buckle down and learn some hard skills before going back to drawing fun stuff - but it always ends up being worth it

Even if sometime i get frustrated for not to be able to achieve my goal yet , I continue to learn and enjoy drawing some basic stuff. The pen thing was the thing that really helped me so much not a lot of new artist decide to do pen drawings but it helps so much I could never draw a straight line not because I sucked I just couldn’t trust myself to draw a straight line but the pen made me just draw and give up cause I couldn’t fix it but in the end I could draw a straight line and it helped immensely

I've been challenging myself to do 100 days of gesture drawing. I'm up to day 75 as of yesterday. It really helps to do one concept for a long time, and I would definitely suggest it since getting good enough at gesture that the proportions and storytelling comes naturally would really help your animation goal. I don't know how you could turn that into good TH-cam content but I got my inspiration from a fitness TH-camr Uce Gang who's doing 100 weeks of going to the gym.
Anyway you're doing great, there are a lot of tutorials methods etc...but the thing I'm realizing is that the most important thing is just drawing miles and miles of lines on paper over a very long time.
100% agree - taking the time to really focus on a specific skill consistently has helped the most. Let me know how it went once you get to 100 days!

Anyway, I've been doing my own rendition of drawing One Piece everyday and I'm making progress! I am currently learning cross hatching and shading so I can try to create manga styled art. I'm also in the process of learning human anatomy (maybe foreshortening too) and I'm progressing really well. I've learned way tooo much information in such a short amount of time which is INSANE! Though one thing is, is that I should probably draw still life even if it doesn't help much. But, we all have so much to go, and that's what makes this fun! Keep going. :]

Hi, I’m a beginner as well and it’s awesome to know we’re not alone on this journey through art, thanks for sharing with us. Also, I might be wrong (again, I’m also a beginner), but when you said you can’t draw 5 vanishing points perspective on your bedroom POV sketch, looking at the drawing, it seemed a little bit unnecessary since it’s was a simple 2 point perspective ( a bedroom isn’t even tall enough to put a third vanishing point). I highly recommend the David Finch’s videos about perspective, he makes it so easy to understand (I don’t like the grid construction tho😂). Thanks again, and awesome evolution!!
Good job man. I’m a creative. I write short stories, attempted books, and have done some graphic design for authors.
I started thinking I’d like to draw. I want to do comedy graphic novels in the vein of Mr. Pickles, Brickleberry, etc. Adult Swim stuff…or just basic chapter books with lots of animation for adults. No one reads books anymore really, and I got frustrated with how limited I would be with photoshop and gimp to make things.
I started hiring artists, but they can never capture my vision. I’m a very visual person. So, I’m starting my art journey.
I just want to draw cartoons.
I didn’t need motivation, because I’m enjoying drawing very much (it’s only been a week…my drawings still suck, but I’m seeing very vast improvements compared to where I was when I didn’t try).

This looks amazing! I love going back to my old sketch books and seeing how much I've grown as an artist and how much more I need to do. One thing I would recommend with your gestures or to practice anatomy for your character, is to break things down more in to shapes. Circles, triangles, and rectangles, will go really far with learning how self teach anatomy. But this is awesome! I can't wait to see more!

Hey Jake, I just want to say it's actually a little surprising how invested I am on your art journey. I just checked at what date you upload this video, and I was disappointed to learn that it had been only a few days from now. I was hoping to possibly find some new content to binge, but unfortunately not. Thank you for making this video, as an artist, it's always interesting seeing what beginners are discovering.
Also, my guess as to why you couldn't draw an original character after 'practicing', was probably because you didn't actually practice. To make an original character, you need to practice gesture, yes, but you also need to practice character design. Shape design. Creating characters based off of prompts, and studying characters made by other artists. Eventually, you'll also need to learn how to draw clothing folds, and you will need to study lots of different clothing styles, definitely relying on pinterest or any other software that offers a constant source of inspirations and ideas. You never practiced any of these in the video, so I understand why your characters came out a bit average. It might also help to know what character you want to draw beforehand; Is your character evil? Draw them a little pointier. Etc. You need to know your character in order to create an unique character design.

@@jakeonart Hey, it's okay, making an youtube channel isn't easy, so take it at your own pace. I don't want to come across as demanding, it's just that your content was so good, I wanted to see more of it.
I work a lot with traditional art, and I'd say I'm an intermediate artist. Some stuff I make comes out nicely, others, not so much. I'm getting more into digital art recently, but I think I'm decent on both mediums. I'd share my deviantart but honestly, it's embarrassing atm, as I haven't uploaded anything fresh for a while, and there are a lot of older drawings there.
I think the most important part of learning art is knowing what to learn in the first place, since there are a lot of steps. I've been drawing for some years, mostly alternating between passive, hobby drawing, and intensive study. I didn't take it very seriously until recently, but since I'm familiar with art, I know a lot of what my own art lacks and how I can improve it.
So, if you want to improve fast, try to familiarize yourself with other fundamentals. Learn from the masters. Really, go wild, since there are a lot of things to discover, some more fun than others.

I'm not great at drawing and I'm kind of stuck with doing ok when looking at references but badly when not using any reference, I found a few good ways to make my own characters and still be able to use references the one I use the most is coming up with a list of stuff about a character how I want them to look and then putting it into an ai art generator and then drawing it myself using that as a reference and fixing the ai glitchyness along the way, the second way is just getting references for individual bits and pieces, like one for pose another for a hair style, one for clothing parts ect.
This is a great strategy - i'll have to try it out, thank you!

Something to push that confidence, I advise you draw with a bic pen. And make those construction lines. Bic pens are good for drawing since you can make very light lines and the more you tilt the lighter the lines.
Ok sweet I'll definitely try it out - making those lighter guidelines with the pen will be a game changer

That's amazing keep on drawing! Some days it might be like 30 mins, but on average I'd say around 1-2 hours
