This International Harvester B414 Tractor registration no: LBF 390D is understood to have been purchased in 1966 by Boulton Paul Aircraft Limited and; as an experimental engineering exercise, converted to hydraulic/hydrostatic drive with a capability of changing direction without the requirement of changing gear. Having developed aviation-related hydraulic drive systems; which of necessity were both light and reliable, the company obviously had great faith in the durability of such a system in the tough agricultural environment with its heavy demands amidst dust, moisture, vibration and variations in temperature. The tractor retains one gear-lever but this is solely for the selection of high/low ratios and the direction and infinitely-variable speed in either direction are selected by a small, very sensitive, lever located to the left hand side of the dashboard. The use of this type of system was not pursued, probably having lost momentum due to a take-over of the company and the accompanying awareness of costs. Fascinatingly, literature to hand refers to the tractor being tested at the works by parking it with its front wheels against an immovable object with the transmission in forward gear at the point of stall for some 8 hours. It is stated that; in spite of the huge stress on the tractor's systems, neither the transmission oil nor the engine overheated. The ownership of the tractor; subsequently to the company's takeover, passed through the hands of various owners and it unfortunately took on a rather neglected appearance. It is understood that it eventually again came to light and was restored by Boulton Paul Heritage Projects, the approximately 780 hours project being completed in April 2005. The tractor starts very readily and the transmission system operates quietly and efficiently as intended. Various press cuttings and copies of photographs of the tractor are included in the sale. This is a likely once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase such an unique machine, which will undoubtedly create great interest wherever it goes. Unfortunately no registration documents are to hand.
That international sound is great!
