- I think these are the 10 greatest tractors of all time. I based "greatest" on popularity, influence on the industry, and innovation. I threw in some honorable mentions too because it is not easy to nail down to just 10 tractors. Let me know what your 10 greatest tractors list looks like.

Great list! But i am a little disappointed that Minneapolos Moline didn't even make an honorable mention. They produced great tractors and were quite innovative. They made the first factory installed fully enclosed cab, were the first ones to offer lp gas as a fuel option, first to use shift on the go transmissons in small tractors, they were on the front lines of the front wheel assist tractors, first to offer a 100hp row crop tractor with an engine they built themselves, and one of the first major brands to build a articulated fwd tractor. On top of that they had the Uni-tractor line and made a 4-cylinder 60hp front wheel asist tractor in 1962.
Our neighbor growing up was an all Moline operation until they dropped out, still had several including two Z,s an old UB and a Super U302 that I later aquired and used for some time, good machines
Ran an old. U model over many an acre. One fine machine.

Allis Chalmer was another great name that was overlooked. The John Deere 4020 was not reference but the 4440 was.The 4020 was introduced in the fall of ‘63 and the last one came off the line in the spring of ‘72.
i had a 1957 minnimoe u model, it never met a gallon of gas it didnt love and the front tire plowed better than any machine i owned
I've owned several of those tractors over the years and love how my current 71 year old Ferguson T0-30 is still getting the job done!
Love my to30 the tractor has alot of power for its size the only thing that hurts it is being light weight.
I tried like hell to wear out our 8N. Did have to overhaul the engine once. Didnt have quads yet, so it did all of the running around fixing fences, chasing cows, and other stuff in addition to regular tractor stuff like pulling the rake, cultivating the garden, running the rotary mower, plowing, discing ect... Had a scoop for the back, angle blade, platform to carry equipment, you name it. That tractor was perfect for our 40 acres.
Not everyone will agree with this list because we all have our favorites. I like this list. Thanks.
I have been running the same 8n Ford for 30 years. Best piece of equipment I have ever owned. I haven't done anything to it except for the water pump. It's definitely way overdue for a overhaul. But it doesn't smoke or knock.
All those old tractors sure bring back memories , especially the old Ferguson and the old John Deere. The hydraulics on the old Ferguson were strong and quick and the platform plenty stable. I've followed an old John Deere for many a mile, loading square bales on a hay wagon.
Im not a farmer but grew up in a small farm town. I miss the days of driving through the country side and seeing all the small farms and the diversity of tractor colors in the fields. It was also great hearing the farm boys parroting their dads tractor preferences at school
International 1066 should have been number 1 in this video out performs 4020 in every job.👍
Case IH Magnum 7220 or 7120. Changed the game in modern tractors. Also wagner or steiger with articulated 4 wheeler made farming bigger faster accomplishable. Oliver 1355 front assist didn't sell well but was a game changer and ahead of its time.
I'd put the John Deere "D" on the list. It was a general purpose tractor, not a row crop, and plowed the plains like no other. The big two cylinders would lug through tough spots where other tractors would have to stop and shift.
It was produced for a total of 30 years, getting updates and styling changes as time went by.
If you want to hear an engine work, search for vintage tractor pulls and find the D's great-grandson, an 830, pulling hard. .
For modern tractors I really liked our 4520 -- a turbocharged 4020 engine with a bigger rear end. Spent lots of hours on it.
And the paint still looks good to this day
True about the D. However, IHC built over 219 000 McD 10 - 20s compared to about 160,000 Ds. Also IHC built about 157,000 15 - 30s which were closer to the JD D in performance.
A friend of ours had a real old G model. That sucker would pull like all get out. You'd think it was through but she'd pop another turn. Lol. That sore thumb radiator sitting out there in the open behind the steering gear tower always amazed me not getting clogged or poked. 🤔😁
Dad told me you could plow in high gear all day with Grandpa's D John Deere. We still have Grandpa's D, 98 years in the same family.
Those 2 bangers were a unique sound as were the old single cylinder Rumly oil pulls American agriculture innovation was unparalleled for a century, like to see us build our own again
My Great Grandpa had a 1930 Farmall Regular row crop like the first one in your video with the large rear wheels. Not the off set small wheels. It is my life's journey to find one for me to fix up and use. Thank you sir for your videos.
I have driven many different makes and models of tractors, while working with the Farm Labour Pool, and I found that the best all around tractor, for ease of operation, fuel economy, reliability, power to weight ratio, and tremendous pulling ability, is the David Brown 1412. It has the most wonderful shift on the go, power shift, as well as that famous David Brown Selectamatic hydraulic system, with Traction Control Unit, etc. With its turbo charger, it has the economy of a smaller horsepower tractor when doing light work, as well as the extra power needed with the turbo charger, when doing heavier work! I have seen some of these tractors still running excellent even after more than 10,000 hours!
One that should have got a mention is the McCormick Deering WD40, it was produced in the middle 1930's and was the first diesel tractor produced for farming. although it was petrol start with automatic changeover to diesel, and 3 fwd & 1 rev. very hard to steer because of its weight. My Dad had one for years, used to pull a 12 ft chisel plough and was used to pull dead trees to make new cultivation.
Ford 3000, I saw a lot of them growing up.
This brings back a lot of memories for me growing up in the during the 60's and 70's on the farm. We had a Ford 8N which was the very first tractor my Dad bought in the late 50's. Then in the early 60's we got a Massey Ferguson 65 (52 hp Perkins diesel) with a front-end loader and had a two stage clutch which enabled the PTO to remain live whenever you pushed in the clutch to stop the tractor and that was a big deal back then. After that we moved on to several White tractor line models: White 1270 ( 4 wheel drive 40 hp), 2270 (140 hp), 4-150 (150 hp) , 4-210 (210 hp) and finally 4-270 (270 hp). The White 4-150, 4-210 and 4-270 were 4 wheel drive with articulated steering and were all powered by different variants of the popular 3208 Caterpiller 8 cyclinder diesel which was a great engine. The White corporation went bankrupt in 1985 and was absorbed by ARGO-Allis in 1985 which then became known as ARGO in the early 90's.
The Ford 8N was probably my favorite tractor since I started driving it when I was about 8 years old and driving that tractor was a joy because for me it was like playing with a giant sized toy back then. We eventually sold it when I reached my teens as we moved on to much bigger and more modern tractors and kept acquiring more and more land over the years. The 8N will always remain near and dear to my heart. So many early memories with that tractor.
I have a 1952 Ford 8N that I bought rebuilt in 1972 and had overhauled somewhat in 2013. I still enjoy having it to help me with my farm chores.
The greatest 2-wheel drive tractors ever made were made by David Brown, in Huddersfield, England. For sheer pulling power they were in a league of their own. We had a new Massey Ferguson 135 with 45.5 horsepower, pulling a 500-gallon tank of slurry & it wasn't able to pull it into the field through a muddy gap. Tried a David Brown 880 (same horsepower as the MF 135) & it pulled the same tank, through the same muddy gap, no problem.
We then had a David Brown 990, 55 horsepower & it was another absolutely superb tractor. A lorry unit rolled into a ditch half a mile from our house & when we arrived on the scene a neighbour of ours was trying to pull it out with a Ford 5000, 69 horsepower, & it couldn't shift it. We hooked up the David Brown (55 horsepower) to the lorry & it pulled it out no problem!
1000-gallon tanks of slurry were also no problem for our DB 990. The David Browns were truly in a league of their own.
My '52 Case SC is always ready to work when I need it. Starts and runs better than a new car. Won't give it up till I'm too old to climb onto the seat.

I have a 1947 Oliver 88 Rowcrop purchased new in 1947 by my father-in-law. It’s been in our family for 75 years and still runs the same. I bailed countless bails of hay with it way back when.
Might have mentioned that Olive introduced “live” rear power takeoff on this model which put it a big step ahead of other manufacturers. No need to stop ground travel to engage or disengage pto. Good list. Thanks.

Nice vid! I have to say that your choices were well thought out. I liked your info about: engine; drawbar and pto H.P.'s. No matter what, I still prefer my A.C. WD 45. I still use it to: grind and mix pig feed; brush hog occasionally and pull a disc once in awhile. Don't know what I'd do without it. I think it was built in 1954.
I thought the AC B or C would be in the list.
Can't believe the JD 4020 was just an honorable mention. One of the most common tractors around in the Midwest!

Everyone had their experience and favorites. Mine is a bulletproof Oliver 1650. 25 years of daily chores and overloaded in the field work, it never balked.
Our 1800 was used abused and misused, the motor is stuck in it now since it hasn't been started in 25 yrs
We have a 1650 diesel bought new in 1966, has almost 19,000 hours on the original Waukesha engine. My father in law would rather use that over his several new CaseIH tractors!
Grew up on 1650's. Great tractors, should have made this list.
We run an 1850 it has its quirks but it gets the job done, for the heavy field work we use whites

My Dad had a WD 45 AC, very hard to drive, no hydraulics but pulled good. Bro in-law bought an Oliver Super 88 1953, what a great tractor, electric/hydraulic controls for the attachments and just great overall. Always wanted one myself but did not stay a farmer.
BC, I must admit that you were very brave and thick skinned to even attempt this analogy of top ten farm tractors. All of us old farm boys had our own favorites as well as those we didn't want to be caught dead on. I grew up on Johnny Poppers, but enjoyed operating any I got the chance to climb on top. Others were, should I say, more picky. My first drive was the model H John Deere. And before Dad retired, we had model A's and B's, and had worked up to a 3010 diesel. Neighbors and family gave me the chance to experience Farmals, Fords, Massey's, Oliver's, AC's, and Cases. There were a few Mini Moes around, but never got to operate one. Damn right. We have a 68 JD 4020 and it has worked every single day since grandpa bought it brand new. I worked it today and I’ll work it again tomorrow.

I owned a MM G-1355 and it was an awesome trouble free, hardworking machine. Loved the massive amount of torgue, it would pull anything at low or full throttle.

My grandfather still has his G1355 sitting in the machine shed 10 years after he retired. Though his 1355 is badged as an Oliver.
I loved the sound of those 6 cyl MM's as they took on a load.
The John Deere D may have been the tractor that single handedly created the dust bowl. Those things could be filled straight from the oil well and set running in a circle in the morning with a spring on the steering wheel to keep them running in a circle while they plowed an increasing diameter all day long. They probably broke more virgin soil than any other tractor ever.
I'm generally surprised the Allis Chalmerd WD-45, JohnDeere D, JohnDeere R, JohnDeere 60, and the Massey 35 didn't make it
Nice list. I grew up on a small farm. My dad preferred horses even though we were living in the 20th century. I loved farm tractors of all kinds because we didn't have any. John Deere 'A'....putt, putt, putt, putt, putt. Two cylinders with the flywheel on the side of the frame and a hand clutch. Memorable.
I had a Ferguson TO 35 and it had been rebuilt 3 times already when I got it and sold it 15 years later. IT is still running and doing work !
Why no mention of the Fordson Major? Surely one of, if not the best tractors ever made!

O know this is mainly for the U.S. but in my country, fiat 450-480 and ford 3000 are phenomenal tractors, too. They are still used in Turkey, especially on small family farms. Because they're affordable and Turkish people don't have any buying power or whatsoever.
Surprised to not see the Case IH Quadtrac listed, probably the most influential tractor in the last decade.

They all truly made life easier for farmer's around the world
My great grandfather and grandfather bought a 10-20 Mccormick when my dad was around 5 years old in about 1932
The horses soon left
All these tractors had their good and bad points
However, we are blessed with the opportunity and technology that others never got to use or just started to see
My dad and his brothers milked by hand, threw silage down from the silo by hand, cultivated corn with a one row mounted on tractor (farmall A)

Loved brush-hogging (5 ft) with my Ford 9N. It handled the job just fine.
The John Deere 4020 was the best tractor I ever drove. I spent the last summer I worked on the farm on a 4020 diesel.
Horses were very well on their way out two decades BEFORE the 8N came into production. Horses fate was sealed when Cyrus McCormick showed off his reaper for the first time, and certainly by 1911 when the Waterloo Boys went into production.

I agree with your #1 pick. Disagree on some others. The Ford N series should be viewed as a single tractor and should include the Ferguson TE 20. All revolutionized a section of the farming industry from the same core design features, all designed by the same man, Harry Ferguson. The original Fordson and the F series Farmalls are the true tractors that converted farming from horses to tractors. Both were highly reliable, affordable and well supported by their makers. You could buy one and not worry about Ford or IH being out of business when you needed parts. The Oliver 70 deserved its spot because of the innovations in that tractor, from the rear lift to the Live PTO and finally the six cylinder over head valve engine that was far easier on fuel than its competitors. It might have even had on the go shifting. Steiger should also had received a nod for its development of the high horsepower all wheel drive tillage tractor that dominates farming to this day. They didn't invent the concept, but their factory developed the concept to its current standard, even if that product no longer bore the green paint and name.
The Allis Chalmers WD45 was one of the most popular, power for its size and widely used tractors of its time. It should have made the list. Ford 8N, 9N, TE all the same.

In my Neck of the Woods, Arkansas, Farm-all Super M, 730 JD--JD-4020 and 4030 were the Tractors used during the Roaring 60's--Many of these Tractors on nearly every farm...
I got IMT 539, MF 35 variant built in Yugoslavia, love it great machine no hick ups at all.
The first picture for a Ford "8N" at 2:09 is actually a Ford NAA/Jubilee (OHV engine successor to the 8N).
I noticed that right away too when I saw the front of the hood and distributor.

A lot of people make the mistake with identifying the old fords. Just like The 9n was not the predecessor to the 8n, the 2n waa the predecessor. The last picture was a 6 cylinder funk conversion.
Yeah the humped hood was a dead giveaway.
The 8-N was the tractor that replaced my grandpa's mules in 1954. I have the Bill Of Sale that I found in their family Bible, that showed he bought a used 1951 Ford 8--N, disc breaking plow, disc, cultivators, planters, and a stalk cutter. He paid $1,200.00 for all of it! He sold it 20 years later, same tractor and worn out attachments for $1,500.00!! @@ShakeyNelg
I have and still use a 35 Massey Ferguson which is an earlier version of the 135. It was the first tractor I ever rode when I was about 10 years old and I'm 63 today. Still a darn good diesel tractor.

My uncle had a Farmall sitting in front of his garage for many years. My cousin told me that it was a great tractor. I heard that there are a lot of old Ford tractors in Africa. Somebody in the USA was buying old tractors and shipping them over to Africa to help farmers there. The reason that Fords were so highly prized is that there were plenty of parts available and the Fords were easy to fix.
what about the Lanz Bulldog it was super common pre war and after the war it was copied by many countries like Austrailia,Poland,France and many more
My uncle farmed the sandy ground in Seminole Texas close to Midland-Odessa and said that the John Deere "Iron Horse" series weren't very good down there as they needed too much weight on the rear wheels for traction. He had a row crop Massey Ferguson, about a 5 or 6 row and some Case model later on. I was impressed with him after watching him shore up a rod bearing in an irrigation pump motor with a trimmed dollar bill. It ran all that summer long.
Gosh, isn't it really something the hacks that our ancestors knew and were able to by themselves pulloff to enable themselves to get necessary things done!
No quarrel with your list as I'm neither farmer nor market gardener. From what I saw, there was little in it between a Brown 990 and a Fergie 165. But the listed tractors were more ubiquitous. I never did see or hear of a Lanz Bulldog in NZ but I believe their simplicity, despite hot bulb drawbacks, made them popular in Europe.
I agree that the JD 4020 is a very popular tractor, it deserves the number one spot.
The Farmall H was in the “honorable mentions” yet the most popular Farmall produced? Makes a lota sense there....

totally agree with the Massey 135, but I think the Case 500 should at least get an honorable mention, they were dependable beast.

I like the ford Jubilee, the ford 3000 diesel myself. Damn, good tractors. And durable. They got the job done.

Nice collection. Man those Ford's were very popular decades ago. Many i agree with a few i don't, however a nice presentation of the leaders in farm tractors. 👍
I bought a John Deere 950 tractor in 1999 , early 1970s model that has the Japanese diesel in it. It had been overhauled and painted. I had to put a used fuel pump on it this summer, because they don't make parts anymore, I have put over 1000 hrs on that little tractor and it is still going strong.
MF135 we purchased one in 1971 it is still working away. Great value for money.

I still own a 1968 4020 . This year I used it to power a irrigation relift pump. I put about 600 hours on it I grew up with John Deere tractors . Early we had A s , a G, a 70 , 720 s , 4020 s, 5020 s, 4840 s, a6030, I have 6 8400s, a 8430 , and a8335R. Today plus my antique A, 70, 4320, and 4020 . I have always liked John Deere tractors and got good service from them.
Just used my 1947 8n tractor yesterday to put in some posts. You can’t use the hydronic lift without the PTO engaged. It makes work with an auger very dangerous.
I got a 39. .9n..use it to plow snow,drag logs and such..eighty years old,runs great even though I leave it out in the rain..best fifteen hundred bucks I ever spent..let's see ya do that in eight decades with your new kabota.had a little JD model l when I was a kid..hand cranking was brutal for a teen
A kubota IS likely to do that to be sure....that's where you are wrong haha....but some other ones...like the blue new holland ones...that's where what you said is probably the truth.

Fordson model F - I grew up on an 80 acre farm near Wichita that my parents had moved to in around 1942 or so. A modified Fordson came with the farm. It had been converted to rubber tires all around and had, of all things. a Buick six cylinder engine stuffed in for power. I drove the tractor as I got older in collecting hay bails and driving to the barn with the load. My dad never spoke much about this odd tractor combination though I recall him saying it didn't have the right kind of torque for plow work. The farm buildings and equipment was auctioned off in the early '50s and the old tractor went away. I've wondered often where it might have ended up, it was quite a special piece of work that was fun to drive.
Minneapolis-Moline UDLX! First tractor ever produced with a factory cab. Would later change the industry forever. MM and Allis Chalmers were both way ahead of their time, which is probably why they went out of business, especially MM.
You listed 3 of the almost exact same tractors from Ford/Ferguson.
I think what makes a good tractor is reliability, power, fuel efficiency, comfort, ease of operation, and price. Here is a list of good tractors that I know of, or have heard about off the top of my head:
1) Kubota M110; we have had one for 17 years, has almost 5000hrs, and no issues, 5 cylinder engine
2)White 2-105; had great transmissions, and reliable and fuel efficient engines, and are usually sold for low prices
3 IH 1066; Every farmer knows of these tractors, very reliable, and a strong workhorse, most are still being used today
4)Allis-Chalmers 200; had one of the earliest power shifts, good on fuel, dependable, light weight (good hay tractor), but complicated to operate
5)Massey-Ferguson 1085; really good on fuel for the horse power, perkins engine
6)Minneapolis-Moline M5; great smaller tractor, 4 cylinder efficient diesel, simple
7) JI Case 1030; efficient, comfortable, good visibility
**By this time I am really thinking
8)JD 1010; neighbor bought a used one at an auction, doesn't seem to have any issues, he likes it.
9)Ford 6700; 4 cyl good on fuel, good transmission, but pricey for the age.
10)David Brown 990; utility tractor with good power.

I own a 1953 Ford Jubilee NAA , DAMN GOOD TRACTOR. TOUGH AS HELL , EASY TO FIX .
The Ferguson was also a market leader in Australia known as the "Massey Ferguson" in grey or red (latter series), as well as the Fordson Major. No mention of "Lanz Bulldog"? A popular tractor imported to Australia in the "old days". Chamberlain Champion another iconic tractor in Australia. Great video, much enjoyed.😉

Production numbers (in countries with options) are probably the best indicator. I'm probably not alone by saying the 4020 and 1066 ARE the best tractors in history. All things considered. Red and green fans can argue which to be #1 and #2.

Sorry. In a red neighborhood NOTHING can beat 8s and 12s. 20,000 hrs is not unheard of.
I agree with #1, the 4020 was an incredible machine.
I also liked the Ferguson 35. The 135 diesel was a great improvement on an already great machine.
We had a JD A when I was growing up in the 70s. It had electric start but you still had to open the petcocks on the cylinders to start it.

Geat list. Every farmer had a Ford 8 or 9n, at least the older farmers. Lots of these old tractors also acted as transportation for country folk, a bit before my time.

agree, my father bought one so that we little pre teen members of the family could drive it with legs too short to reach the foot clutch. I would buy one right now for my farm if I cold get a good deal on one. It might be a little stronger and heavier than my 47 8N Ford.
Farmall M hands down. Still have Grandpa's M. That tractor still does the job. That tractor is the toughest tractor I have been around.

I taught my son how to drive a 1951 Farmall "C" when he was 6 👍 he is 31 now😳🤣
Dad and grandpa ran the piss out of red...560, 856, 86 series, magnums.....never opened an engine, trans or rear end. Neighbors with new green have constant problems.
We used a 560 gas, great engine piss poor transmission and pto. Transmission was failing all of the time if only the tranny was as well built as the engine that would be the greatest tractor we ever had. JD 2940 15,000 hours never had a problem even has the original clutch.
If they had 86 series and used them they put in torques and clutches and had 2 bolts in cab floor so when it hung in 2 gears you could get at it easy with. a bar to pry it out unless the didnt have aux fuel tank
Yes!! The Cub was a fantastic little thing. The John Deere "A" on the farm next door to me had the modern seat and hydraulics. I thought it was called a "1951"

OH. How I am getting nostalgic with the collection of old Masseys and Fords. Good times. I used to love the DB select-O-Matic. I also loved the Fordson Major, Ford 3000, and the internationals. Coming from the Isle of Wight, England, I never really saw a John Deere until the late 1980s and even then it was only arable farmers who bought them.
My 1952 Ford 8N is the pride of my hobby beef and hog farm. I use it year round on all jobs.
