    hello xj 600 owner here since 2003. i have some tips for you. 1 oil change intervals on the xj600 are 6000km. Xj 600 is air-cooled, so the oil temperature is higher than in water-cooled motorcycles and the oil loses its properties faster. 2 use oil with a higher density for high temperature, such as 10w50 15w50 and even at higher mileage 20w50 mineral for the same reason the engine works at high temperature and if it is not so important in cold weather, in Hot 10w40 oil can be burned by this it needs to be add often, which is common in xj if you drive at high speeds or you have leaks, which often happens. the oil also becomes very thin and therefore the gearbox and clutches can work worse and the engine is exposed to overheating. Models since 97 were equipped with a small oil cooler, which improved cooling. The best compromise proven over the years is 15w50 semi synth (don't buy full synth oil because it's a waste of money for this engine). 3 as for the filter and the replacement itself, it is better to put the motorcycle on the central stand already during draining, then there is a chance that the oil will drain faster. You can add fresh oil to the filter, but it is not necessary. The alternative filter is the HiFlo 303 and it is best to buy the regular version (like your old filter) with a large spanner not a socket one because all the sand and dirt from under the wheels will fall on the filter and the spanner space will wear out quickly. 4. in the earlier video from the trip you mentioned that the motorcycle burns a lot - xj when riding a tourist should do from 280 to 300 without turning on the reserve, so there is a chance that you may have poorly adjusted carbs. 5 in the next video you can change the air filter as you haven't done it yet it can be a bit dirty from the desert. 6 You can find the "Haynes" service manual is very helpful. I've been following the channel since the beginning. Cheers!

      @@FreeMilesMC You should stick to the manufacturer's recommendation
      Oil thickness rating is for ambient temperature
      The same bike will get different recommendations depending on the region you use it in
      SAE10W40 means -30 to +40 celsius
      Think about it, tipical engine running temperature is 90 celsius
      High viscosity oil robs the engine of power so generates more heat
      Oil that is too thin will not protect the engine
      Don't spend a fortune on oil get cheap stuff and replace it sooner
      Replace the air filter and spark plugs and the bike will run a lot better

    The oldschool XJ is just there for you when you need it. It only needs some very simple maintenance and love. Built to last, built to be easy and cheap to mantain for decades! :) Love it!!
    Peace!

    Η αλλαγή λαδιού και φίλτρου είναι εύκολη. Ένας καλός έλεγχος από κάποιον που ξέρει σε ολόκληρη τη μοτοσυκλέτα, είναι πάντα καλοδεχούμενη. Οι Ιαπωνικές μοτοσυκλέτες γενικά είναι εύκολες στη βασική συντήρηση. 👍

    Hey Miles you forgot the rubber gloves in your list of essentials It's a good video for new motorcyclists. What I was most impressed by was when you put the bike on the centre stand by just jerking it back with legs either side. I've always done it from the side and have real trouble because I've lost the extention/lever on the stand. I'm going to try your method tomorrow! Of course it could be that I'm getting weak in my old age🧙‍♂

    • @FreeMilesMC
      @FreeMilesMC  ปีที่แล้ว

      I should definitely try your way of doing it too because for me it always felt natural to just jerk it back on to the center stand. Because the seat hight feels really little to me. And to be honest my way is probably not ideal

      @@FreeMilesMC I tried your method and couldn't do it but can from the side. Don't think I'm tall enough (1.83m) to get the leverage maybe.

    If you add oil to the new filter.. fill it about halfway with fresh motor oil. When you use old one you reintroduce liquid that might be contaminated back into the system. 🙂

      Do you mean just pouring new oil into the filter?

    • @peterkellogg2788
      @peterkellogg2788 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @viivie267 For those people who prefer to prefill the filter it's just pouring fresh oil into it. In my honest opinion that's not needed. On my motorcycles I just put on a fresh filter without any liquid in it. The danger of prefilling it is that dirt of any kind can get on the outlet side of the filter, bypassing it.

    Is there any reason why you put the bike on the center stand using that method? I find it way easier if you stand besides it.

    Very usefull video for me. Next oil change I will now dare to try it myself with my "95 XJ 600S. Nice to see footage with exactly the same bike. Over here it has been snowing quite heavy the last couple of days. Did u shoot this video earlier or just not as cold there atm where u live?

      It’s snowing here aswell. I just have to preproduce videos to manage everything with work.
      Especially now with the short days. Until I can maybe one day can turn TH-cam in to my job.
