Photographer Pete McBride and writer Kevin Fedarko embark on a perilous adventure to make a sectional thru-hike of the Grand Canyon, a feat few have accomplished. In places, the canyon is 18 miles wide and more than a mile deep, and the adventurers quickly realize the enormity of the task ahead, enduring sprained ankles and hyponatremia mere days into the hike. But the endless scrambling and climbing in the extreme heat give way to staring in awe at the beauty of the Confluence, an area considered sacred by local tribes, where the waters of the Little Colorado River and the Colorado River meet-and where developers hope to build a tram to serve up to 10,000 tourists a day.

They want to give the average person the same view as a fit hiker (or one willing to undergo the pain), but I don't like that. Not everything is meant to be average
ULTRANAUT well said...what's next? party barges? building concrete barricades all around the rim so somebody can't fall? how about building many small dams to control the river so the lowest common denominator of inner tuber is safe? that developer makes me puke when he gets cosmic about how a person would feel about their place in the universe...
ULTRANAUT that's what you get with 8 years of liberals in charge...equality and liberal tolerance....lol that's why they are rioting evewhere and protesting..bahaha they didnt get their way so now they acting like children..typical.. . this is what liberals call saving the environment from private land owners and why the Bundy's fought the law.

The confluence attraction is nothing more than a lame money grab. What a shame to be so desperate for money you would throw a tourists attraction in the middle of that beautiful place. Some things are better left untouched in my opinion

"If we can't protect the Grand Canyon, what CAN we protect?" - I just watched the entire documentary on DISNEY+ and was blown away. THANK YOU to Kevin and Pete for taking this bold, insane, demoralizing, life-threatening journey so that I could see and feel why the Grand Canyon is so precious and sacred, and why it's so incredibly important to protect her.
Beauty is earned, not given.
Don't touch the canyon! It's one of rare majestic places in the world.
The same goes for the bottom of the canyon as for the top of Everest, not everyone belongs there...

i hope they will never create this escalate for tourist business at this beautiful place ....... the whole earth is full of this so called attractions with view points, snack bars and parking lots. some places should be preserverd only for the real hikers and explorers......
...have you ever been to the Grand Canyon? Not only is it already a gigantic tourist place, it's also beyond freaking huge. None of the already added parking lots and snack bars are even noticeable

I saw is project in a national geographic magazine and I thought that was a horrible idea what about the ones who want to hike it.

I'm on the side of Saving the Confluence. It's one thing to have man made attractions like Mount Rushmore, but I've always felt that there's something special and sacred about the cayon that should leave it untouched by man.
Is there a place to petition against this project?
Amazing. Watching it now on Disney plus. I was there last month (October) and I fell in love with it, mind you I was terrified and kept my distance from the edge but it still affected me spiritually. I was in complete awe of the place. I wanna go back

we have similar problem in Bali. there is a bay called Benoa Bay, that are suposed to be conservation area and sacred area for Balinese. The goverment changes the regulation so the developer could continue to develop by doing reclamation to the bay. They want the bay to be like Disnyland with 5* resorts and facilities surounded by mangroves. The protest still going and strong resistance from the people make the project into a halt.

You cant possibly survive that long with no source of drinking water xD Either they've some sort of filters with them, either they have supply from outside
also food, what are they gonna eat for a year? Leaves? Bugs?
These guys were getting blisters on their feet on day two which means they have baby soft feet or another way of saying that is they didnt get in shape for this epic trek.
how do they carry food for weeks?
Wearing a long sleeve button up and shorts maybe, just might be part of your problem with heat and cuts.
So make our lives better with accessibility for all who want to see that could never see because of some disability.
People can ride burros to the bottom on a guided trip if they can't hike it.

The confluence attraction? Can't we please just leave something as spectacular as the Grand Canyon alone. Please don't let the grandeur fall victim to greed. I live in a historical Tennessee town that has historical civil war relevance. There was a rock outcropping along a river near at the site of a Union fort. There were initials and dates scratched into the rock, dating to the pre-civil war, but mostly the civil war. Hadn't been there for years, but decided to take my children there to see the site. We get there and the park district, in all their wisdom, built a deck over it. Very disappointing. Leave things alone.
Interesting so far. Stop drinking untreated water.

CraigX Rubin . ....you know what I was thinking those hikers are going too fast and dehydrating themselves, they need to hike about five hours a day when the sun is not hot two and a half hours hiking in the morning and another two and a half hours hiking in the evening just before sunset to keep healthy and do some fishing in their rest time making a little grilled fish for proteins. I really admire these guys hiking this grand canyon and look forward to see the part 2 of this wonderful adventure.
If allowing everyone to see the beauty of this location results in the destruction of it, the entire reason to go there is lost. I can have snacks at home, why would I go to the Grand Canyon for that?

I'm so disgusted that some greedy developers want to destroy part of this beautiful & sacred canyon under the guise of helping them financially.

Luckily this project didn't pan out. There would be so much to consider that I'm sure these developers weren't thinking about, like waste. Human waste, food waste, general trash. Would need to be a zero waste facility. Can you imagine thousands of cheeto bag littering this amazing landmark?
That development is nothing but a cash grab if people can't hike there they don't deserve to experience it.

Terrible footwear and pant choices!!!! More ankle support (leather) and a pair of khaki colored Carhart work pants. What keeps you cool @ 90% humidity won't work at 15%. Watch some aoudad, they're the pro's at hikes like these.

First of all, are you trying to convince me that this hike was inherently hard? Or did you geniuses just make it hard? I have to wonder why on Earth you didn't take liquid or encapsulated electrolyte supplements, water filters or desalinators, iodine tablets, titanium cookware, perhaps a crossbow or lightweight fishing rod to hunt with if shit gets bad enough? It looks like you took cameras and blankets. Gentlemen I'm sorry but this is no way to trek in the 21st century
