Welcome to St. Francis Referral Hospital
The history of SFRH dates back from 1927 when Baldegg Sisters from Switzerland opened the first dispensary in Ifakara. In 1931 the dispensary was upgraded to a 30 bed hospital. Administratively, the hospital was managed by the nuns for twenty years until the arrival of the first medical officer in 1951. The main infrastructure of the present hospital was built in the late 1950s by the late Dr Karl Schoepf, a surgeon from Austria who is still well remembered by many people in Ifakara and beyond. As the demand for services increased facilities were gradually expanded to the present 371 beds capacity.
In 1976, by mutual agreement between the Diocese of Mahenge and the Government of Tanzania through the Ministry of Health, the hospital became Designated District Hospital for Kilombero. The Diocese of Mahenge retained the ownership of the hospital and was also responsible for its management. In November 2010 the hospital was upgraded as a referral hospital at regional level. The decision was reached in an attempt to implement the Health Policy - 2007 and Public and Private Partnership Strategy which aims to provide and improve health services to all citizens of the United Republic of Tanzania.
The key functions of the hospital are to provide health care services to the sick, supportive environment of learning and research in health. The hospital is used as a teaching platform for the newly established Medical School (St. Francis University College of Health and Allied Sciences), Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health (TTCIH) and Ifakara School of Nursing. It is also used as a research site for Ifakara Health Institute (IHI). The hospital accommodates medical students from various countries coming for elective clerkship. In addition the hospital is recognized as World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating district hospital.
