  • Do you struggle with OCD? Do you have intrusive thoughts, intrusive feelings, unwanted images or bad thoughts that overwhelm you? Often the way to get OCD relief is the opposite of what people think. The only evidenced-based treatment approach is a type of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) called ERP (Exposure Response Prevention).
In this video I talk about the power of doing exposures for OCD one small step at a time. Do you wonder why triggering your OCD would be a good idea? Let me explain...

Thank you this helps a lot. Recently i’ve been exposing myself to my uncomforts and things that i see as contaminated and i feel gross all the time to be honest. I’m just hoping the feeling goes away.

It's not just being exposed, but to do the RP - response prevention. Acknowledge what you're feeling, thinking, seeing and tell yourself that you've got this. Tell that monster that you're ok with being uncomfortable. The brain listens. Reflect: Was it as bad as I thought? Yes? Then, do it until your brain gets tired of doing it (habituation). It will lessen and may go away. Then go celebrate your win, for sticking it out and reteaching your brain.

Such an amazing video, I got an instant feeling of better when I exposed myself to a thought. I truly hope to reduce hours of ruminating by every thought being exposed. Thank you 🙏🏻💙

I know I should be doing ERP but my checking OCD is tied in with my work and I'm terrified that if by doing ERP I mess up, it's going to affect my job (yes, I'm an adult who watches and loves your videos!) - I just feel that I can't take that risk :( Even the idea of feeling any kind of discomfort distresses me.

It’s normal with OCD. I’ve been stuck in that (and partially still am). What you should do, better with a therapist, is “just start”! Little by little you’ll be able to do bigger and bigger exposions, but remember, just start somewhere!

Any advice for ERP specifically for moral ocd? Upsetting thoughts about hurting peoples feelings, judging the appearance of others, lying, being 100% truthful

I know this comment is kind of old, but maybe this will help you. I reccomend looking up Jon Hershfield's interviews on moral ocd. His work including his books really help me. He is an ocd doctor who actually has moral ocd, but he recovered and helps others with ocd too.

Does watching videos on ERP help with OCD as well when I'm at home? or is that a compulsion? I like to believe that this could be part of therapy as it makes me uncomfortable to watch others feeling the same. I've been too comfortable at home, and I'm fighting to get out and do something but, I feel like I don't even know what to do. I work from home as a Nail Technician and work as been super slow this summer. So I work at a Brow place every Monday as a receptionist so I can practice leaving the house and work on my social anxiety. I get really uncomfortable around women and have these intrusive thoughts that I "might" be "gay" and then my brain goes back and forth to "do I really love my boyfriend? Lets leave the state and never come back" and then goes back to thinking intrusive thoughts about my sexuality, and then other things as well. I've been reading and watching more about ERP, even if it makes me super uncomfortable...
