    Hi, at this vedio timed 1:50 minutes you decoded SLP095 = 1095 millibars. Perhaps you're just confused. I think it should be 1009.5 millibars. If my memory is correct the rule in decoding SLP in metar is that when SLP is followed by Zero (0) you add 10 after SLP as SLP 1009.5. When SLP is followed by 9 or lower number, add 9 after SLP like SLP978.5

      You do add 10 in that case, sometimes I talk faster than my brain works. Nice catch!

      It's also not millibars, it's a measurement called hectopascels. It's equel to a millibars so I guess it's semantics.

    This seems like an archaic way of handling weather reports with today's available technology. I feel like besides the very basics that I would forget what most of this stuff even means.

      It feels strange. This is clearly not something that stays archaic to be compatible with voice communication since missed letters when writing it down would change the whole meaning and if you transmit it digitally why not have your screen display it in long form for you right away?

      it's done that way for international standards, this is so if you don't speak english the report can and still be read and understood by pilots!

      @@imyourocd I suspect it’s from the days of teletype communications where every character typed cost money and time. It seems completely archaic in 2021.

    I don't see the difference between Snow Grains, Ice Pellets, Ice Crystals, and GS conceptually. How do you distinguish between them since their names are all kind of synonyms(at least I keep thinking they're all four things talking about one thing)?

      There are about 2 dozen distinct types of snow that all depend on temperature, humidity, and other factors. If you can memorize them all (I haven't), you can get a lot of atmospheric information just from looking at snowflakes.
      Snow Grains are small grains of ice that don't really accumulate. Basically the "drizzle" equivalent of Sleet.
      Ice Pellets or Sleet are frozen raindrops. They may form from snow that has fallen through an inversion and melted before entering freezing air again. They are different from hail in that hail basically starts with an ice pellet and accumulates layers of liquid rain that freezes around it.
      Ice Crystals are like a fine, frozen dust that blows on the wind. You get these when it's bitterly cold. Basically low-altitude cirrus clouds.
      GS or Snow Pellets are basically small hail that forms from snowflakes. You might expect more or less regular snow mixed in depending on altitude. They are full of air pockets, so they are much lighter than proper hail or ice pellets.

    In regards to SLP remark the conversion is a bit off. It should be, add 10 in front if 1st number is less than 5 and add a decimal before last digit. So SLP095 should read 1009.5 millibars not 1095. If 1st digit is greater than 5 then add a 9 in front. For example, SLP898 means 989.8 millibars.

    "TAFs are valid for a 30 hour time period and are issued 4 times a day at 6 hour intervals." I find this contradictory. If they're valid for 30 hour time period, then why are they re-issued 4 times a day? Can you explain please? Thanks

      Used to be valid for 24hrs, now they look out 30hrs (at most airports) and are issued every 6 hours. Each TAF will have the time or issue, and valid times

    Reading the TAF and Metars isn't difficult but IMO it is a waste of time. Just write out the weather. No more code. It is just one more thing to memorize. There are plenty of things in aviation that can be considered as outdated and need to be changed in order to simplify training and speed up the process. It all comes down to the time and the money.

      Pressure is always rounded off to the next lower value. Similarly, for temperature in positive, you add 0.5 and deduct 0.5 in case of temperature in negative.
      For eg. 2.5 degrees C will be 3 degrees C. Similarly - 12.5 degrees C will be 12 degrees C. Hope this helps! 😊
