It takes just a few weeks to learn some basic conversation in Japanese, Chinese, or Korean. Use the program I've used here: offers.pimsleur.com/free-trial-oriental-pearl
I think some people are just "built" better at learning new languages.... Your friend was there for how long and they kept making jokes that he wasn't very good, but you were there for 6 years and you're totally fluent.... Yea anyone can pick up enough to get by on a vacation, but I think most people are just memorizing words and phrases, but to be able to actually have a fluent conversation AND to be able to THINK in the language is learning on a whole other level. Even with full commitment and dedication, some people just don't have that part of their brain as strong as others. (I remember seeing a show about acquired savant syndrome where people bump their head, or get really sick, or have a stroke then suddenly they become super gifted in areas they never had once ounce of interest in before - like a brain surgeon having a stroke then suddenly being able to paint masterpieces without ever having picked up a paintbrush in his life before that) Well this Acquired Savant guy (or maybe this guy was born that way, I forget) was challenged to learn how to speak Icelandic in 1 week, which is considered THE HARDEST language to learn... AND HE DID IT!!! He was able to have a full conversation with a guy, and this was all documented on a TV show, and after the week he talked to the native Icelandic person live on tv in front of a studio audience of Icelandic people, IN ICELAND - just to prove it was all real!!! Well part of the show was talking about how traditionally scientists/doctors had thought learning a new language WELL all depended on the development of this specific part of the brain and how much activity it generally has... and some people are really good at learning new languages and some people are really bad at it....and this is typically true... but with savants it doesn't show up that way... their entire brain is lighting up the way the language region would when someone is speaking a second language fluently.... So guess what I'm getting at is that it's not always about what technique you use to learn the language, or what program, or how long, or how much immersion you experience daily, some people are just not good at picking up a new language. This doesn't mean they aren't smart or anything, it's just not a talent they have.... BUT the cool thing is that NO ONE KNOWS UNTIL THEY TRY TO LEARN A NEW ONE!!! :D - so I'm gonna check out that program and try to learn Japanese :D
How beautiful to cross so seamlessly between so many cultures and their languages. You are an inspiration and I wish I could be like you. I do speak English, French, Spanish and German but your skill is so very special. Thank you for making the world a better place.
It's almost the ultimate compliment. I moved to a new country, learned the language as good as I could before moving. After 2,5 years I can manage perfectly, I understand everybody and everybody understands me, but... to sound like a native, and be able to express yourself as a native... that's really something else!
I (American) took middle school and high school Spanish and spent 2 months in Central America the summer after graduation. One day during a party with a bunch of other young people, one of the locals asked another local who knew me, "Does he speak any English?" That was my proudest moment. Sadly, that was 50 years ago and my Spanish has diminished.
You are so, so amazing! I lost my dad earlier this year and your videos bring me back out of the tears and sadness. The amount of positivity I feel through the screen is incredible! Thank you!
Even knowing a little of the language in the country you are in is super helpful. I'm not very good, but my limited Japanese helped immensely when at ordering food and shopping, especially at the Japanese convenience stores.
Some people are insanely good at learning other languages. I met a bloke, name John, who was managing a bar in a hotel in Flims-Dorf in Switzerland in 1980 in Kanton Graubünden. He was British and had been living and working in hospitality in Switzerland for a few years, but certainly not a lifetime. His Schwizertütsch was 100% fluent and the locals were certain he was a native Swiss. I told one of them one night that John was an Englishman and definitely not a born Swiss. He listened again as John spoke to some locals and told me that there was no way that John was foreign born, that he in fact spoke a regional accent from Bern , Bernertütsch and was definitely a Berner not an Englishman. I could not convince him, so there you go.
These are my favourite video's of the various content that you produce. Part of me enjoys how you subvert the expectations of the people you interact with, by being able effectively communicate in their native languages. The other part of me likes how the interactions change, because of your abilities in the dominant languages spoken in Japan, China and Korea. My Japanese language ability is improving, slowly, but never the less improving. Your and Tommy's Patreon Lessons give directly applicable words and phrases used in day to day conversations and interactions. This is an added benefit to being able to support a brilliant content creator. Your content, inspires my language journey, informs me of interesting people and places that you meet and go to. Explain things that confuse or confound me in the Japanese language and culture, and finally entertain the heck out of me. Any day Anming 7 uploads a new video on the Oriental Pearl Channel, is a good day made better.

There's a place near where I live that specializes in making just phở. Really good place, so you get people in there who speak different languages. Entire families speaking together at their tables. You’re a fabulous polyglot who speaks so many languages. I regard myself as an Australian polyglutten, I eat so many types of Asian, European and Pacific Islander foods
I’d like to. It’s a big thing to organize though. It’s like like I can just have a small group of people in a Starbucks. When I did this in Tokyo 45 people came.
Exploring and learning about culture, language, and life is what makes us human. Our curiosity. People always get shocked when they hear someone speak another language or understand and respect a culture. Isn't this what we should want? Understanding. If we live in̈ a world of ignorance we wont continue to evolve to understand this amazing world and life around us you know
07:13 I can speak at least 3 languages, Italian, English, , a little of French and local Nord italian dialects, I understand a litte of regular spanish if not spoken too fast. Even if I have seen this before in italy, I'm still amazed... How can someone live in a foreign country and don't speak the local language after 8 years ?
Thanks for these videos!!! I have tried to learn as many Languages as I can. I was a military Brat and lived in Italy Languages I have studied is Italian, Spanish, Chinese, American Sign Language I have a goal to one day be fluent in 7 different languages other than English Unfortunately if you don’t practice them you lose it.
The only thing I noticed since I been watching your videos, is.... When you talk all the other languages and then you laugh, it kind of sounds light your laugh box is broken big time, lol But I so love your videos and I am jealous of all you get to see and do. Its a great life you have. Thanks for your videos. ❤️😘🤗
@@OrientalPearl I been en entertainment for over 30 years and I am a people watcher and see things most do not. What you are asking is hard for me to explain but I will do my best. lol As you learn all the different languages that you have, and live within each race of people, people will start to absorb and pick up the same habits, the dialects and voice patterns, and the last one and most important to you and what I'm talking about is the mannerisms. In a way they, the different customs start to fight from within you to be dominant, in your actions, speaking. Example one here is you seem really fluent and comfortable speaking Mandarin. Now when you speak English a little bit, you struggle and catch yourself on little bits of words at times. My mom was from Germany and learned English all on her own, yet you can always catch a German person's accent, its unique. So laugh box I referring to Asian people in general are way more respectful , polite, as well as other noticeable traits. They offen being so kind laugh much different, the smile is the first thing to show, then their is a more giggle embarrassment look while they laugh, often you will see them covering their mouth or face well laughing. It's a smaller laugh, not a real hearty laugh. You get caught between I call it, a for lack of better terms, an some what normal American laugh when you start, that unknowingly starts to be a slower giggle as the culture you live in, it's different, kind of at times sound broken, but it's truley unique to you. I say this not in any sort or attempt to be mean. You my dear have a very unique laugh that I don't think no one could replicate, there for it makes you even more special. As you see I watch your channel not just for your intended content but to study other cultures as well. So with your videos I get the best of both worlds.lol I get jealous that you get to travel and see all that you do, so I can live a little threw you. Alot of the places I would love to travel to are to dangerous to go to these days, then there is also the funds required to see them all, lol. I plan still to take my younger wife over seas still, that I do have money to do once, but the real question I guess is were. I traveled to Italy once and Germany 3 times, so both I like but that's me. I have a love for ancient things, she not so much, but amazing libraries and she is all over that. Lol So did I explain the laugh that I spoke of well enough, to make sense?
I too used Pimsleur method for Mandarin and highly recommend it to other professionals I work with. It's by far the best way to learn a foreign language. This is even the preferred method by the US government and FBI. LOL

I love your channel. My boyfriend is Japanese and I recently moved to Japan halfway across the world to be close him. I used to watch your videos whenever I felt down about it. I hope my Japanese skills improve a lot! ❤ keep it up!
Wow, that’s awesome that you moved to Japan!
You’re a fabulous polyglot who speaks so many languages. I regard myself as an Australian polyglutten, I eat so many types of Asian, European and Pacific Islander foods
Good and interesting video, bridges must be built between people and nations. It is great to see how you are working on this mission.
Love the glitch, brilliant

Thank you my friend. I'm always happy to see you here.
Next time you come home to Michigan let us know and do a fan meet-up
I’d like to. It’s a big thing to organize though. It’s like like I can just have a small group of people in a Starbucks. When I did this in Tokyo 45 people came.
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Most Asian people are kind hearted if you show them respect.
Exploring and learning about culture, language, and life is what makes us human. Our curiosity. People always get shocked when they hear someone speak another language or understand and respect a culture. Isn't this what we should want? Understanding. If we live in̈ a world of ignorance we wont continue to evolve to understand this amazing world and life around us you know
It's really nicer to speak and understand more than 1 language. You don't need any subtitles. Proud that I Am bilingual.
I was a military Brat and lived in Italy
Languages I have studied is
Italian, Spanish, Chinese, American Sign Language
I have a goal to one day be fluent in 7 different languages other than English
Unfortunately if you don’t practice them you lose it.
The only thing I noticed since I been watching your videos, is.... When you talk all the other languages and then you laugh, it kind of sounds light your laugh box is broken big time, lol But I so love your videos and I am jealous of all you get to see and do. Its a great life you have. Thanks for your videos. ❤️😘🤗
Laugh box?
@@OrientalPearl I been en entertainment for over 30 years and I am a people watcher and see things most do not. What you are asking is hard for me to explain but I will do my best. lol
As you learn all the different languages that you have, and live within each race of people, people will start to absorb and pick up the same habits, the dialects and voice patterns, and the last one and most important to you and what I'm talking about is the mannerisms. Lol
So did I explain the laugh that I spoke of well enough, to make sense?
I too used Pimsleur method for Mandarin and highly recommend it to other professionals I work with. It's by far the best way to learn a foreign language. This is even the preferred method by the US government and FBI. LOL
Now i need to buy mangosteen
Hi Michel. I miss you. The mangosteen season is so short. It will already be over by the time you're back here.
I hope you make a video where minorities in Tokyo and Kyoto live and their businesses
You are incredible 👏🏻
I guess after watching for awhile now, I should do the right thing here lol Subscribed!
Thank you for subscribing!
