11/16/2023: I recently got a 2012 Fiesta SE automatic and the issue is hard to diagnose. Would you be able to help? It drove completely fine for 20-30 min, then parked and all of a sudden the transmission light and check engine light came on. As I drove it home shortly after the lights came on, the shifting was delayed or non existent. At first it shifted smooth from 1st gear to 2nd, then wouldn’t shift. If I accelerated quickly it would then shift up to 3rd, and eventually 4th. A minute later seemed to not have a gear. Came to a stop, then it down shifted itself to 1st gear. I was then able to drive it again, shifted to 2nd fine and wouldn’t shift to third unless I got to higher RPMs. It shifts, but not consistently when it gets stuck, and can be manipulated into shifting with accelerating and then letting off the accelerator abruptly. I worked at a Ford dealership in the Repairs Department and changed a zillion of these TCM's , most of the time I was able to clean the areas where the grounds were on the body of the car and it fixed some of the customers cars completely and didn't need the TCM module replaced which saved $987.54 . The DuraTech 2.0 engine is a little beast of the 4 cylinder cars and are super reliable, in the whole 7 years of servicing Ford's i save the 1999 to 2011 ford focus only come in for regular service, no the Body style isn't as nice as the 2012-2017 focus but they last as long as Toyota's and Honda's the only Fault I saw with the 2008-2011 Focus was the valve cover Gaskets Failing and spilling oil down the spark plug tubes and fowling out the coils and the Transmission solenoids , other than that the Rocker panels Rotting out , i Actually owned a 2010 Focus SeS and finally quit Driving it with 520.356 miles on it , original motor and transmission, its parked in my garage waiting for a Rebuild and Rocker panel replacement and some paint work then im putting it back on the road again, Love the Focus mk2's they are a lot better car than a 2006 Hyundai Elantra im currently driving even though the car has lower miles it feels super cheap but cant have it all . Hope everyone is able to Fix their mk3 Foci's if not check out the older 2008-2011 models you won't be disappointed. Jokes aside they are great cars
What and where are the grounds your talking about Sir? I'm having a time with my daughters 2014 focus. Replaced both actuators and it's still causing problems.
I actually have a 2010 focus with bad valve cover gasket, tried to fix, but think I need a valve cover as well (lose screw?) and now solenoid codes, so yea, I think I'm having issues you described.
@@kindercarcaredetailing4768 @urimarrufo2002 He's talking about the TCM grounds. You will see the first one very clearly, on the drivers side of the firewall area, with a little post sticking out of it. The others are very easy to access also. Just take the air box out, and you'll see them on the right hand side(your right, as you face the car). You can't miss them. Some people have had luck after sanding those mating surfaces down to bare metal. The grounds are bolted on top of paint from the factory.
I just watched your clutch actuator replacement and did both, great videos! Drove for one day and my 2015 Focus fell out of gear on the freeway again today and I lost reverse. I just ordered the TCM but the dealers locally in Michigan all say 6-8 weeks for their transmission guys so I need to find someone to program it after this repair. Thanks again for making this video. I have had ford replace the clutch in 2020 and 2022. Hopefully this resolves my issues and then I have to sell this car
Holy crap this only takes less than 15 minutes? Beautiful. Now they have no excuse to claim it takes a lot of man hours. I'll pull this little video up. By the way, who was the genius engineer who designed the battery to be halfway hidden? lol
15 minutes with experience those who aren’t experienced probably gonna take some time but also most shops have 1-2 hour minimum so they make money as well

Just bought a 2016 Focus about 2.5 weeks ago. With 61k miles on it, after passing up a 2014 Focus due to transmission issues and Ford even "fixed" the TCM recall only for the car to stall out when the dealer I was buying from picked it up from Ford. Anyway, went w a newer year on their lot, only to notice some jerking when driving it. Took it to a friend who is a mechanic and 4 codes came up (Transmission Control System Electrical, TCM, Clutch A and B stuck engaged). I am not a mechanic by any means! But I am disappointed in Ford and DONE with the brand! I feel like I got a different year with the same problem as the 2014 I passed up on. I don't have hundreds or thousands plus financing this! I am trying to swap the car out for a 2016 Toyota Corolla w 112k miles on it! Sucks too because I had a 2009 Focus and it was SOLID! All i see in this car is a money pit! I also don't have weeks or months for a free fix that may or may not even fix it from Ford IF it even meets the criteria under a recall I need transportation now!
Also, is the cost of the part and the labor included for replacing the tcm? Does the whole engine have to be removed to replace the transmission on a Ford Cmax?
HELP! I would like to know if the service department at my dealership is ripping me off. They are telling me that the TCM went bad and took out the transmission. The estimate for repairs they gave me is $13,500 plus tax. They told me it is an extensive repair and that they have to remove the whole engine to do it. Some have said that the tcm should be covered by Ford extended warranty until 150k miles. I have only 64k miles on my 2013 Ford Cmax. I just bought it. Where can i find info on the tcm extended warranty? Should Ford be responsible for replacing the transmission since the defective tcm took it out? Inhave a Ford premium care warranty but it only covers up to the value of the car wich id $10,400. They are sticking me with the rest and then cancelling the warranty. Any advice would be helpful thanks.
Hi, this video is for the Focus TCM. It does seem accurate to cost that much in your situation, as a ford reman transmission for the hybrids are extremely expensive. And yes, the engine has to come out to replace the transmission. Since your premium care is covering 10k I think thats still a good deal for you to cover the rest, as the car is worth it considering how low of miles it has.
We got letter about the tcm in our 2014 focus. They would replace if needed. Dealer says its fine but we ar experiencing some stalling issues. Dealer said it needs a new clutch. We just replaced the clutch 2 years ago. !!
I have these cod on my Ford focus P06B8 / P0884 on my 2012 Ford focus. Would it be the same problem? The Car drives back and forth! But when a third fault appears in the shutdown, which would be P0606. It seems more related to the board's announcement than the transmission itself. What do you think?
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles I checked the battery and alternator, and everything is ok! I erased the faults with my OBD, drove in about 9 miles, but upon getting close to home again the fault caused the transmission to fail again (p06B8/P0884/P0606). I turned off the car, restarted and erased it, and drove normally back to my home. When checking the TCM I saw that some mechanic broken out one of the TCM hold connectors and trap it with a zip tie! lol. As it was exposed, it could have caught water, salt, etc. It seems to me like a failure of TCM itself. What do you think? Make sense? Thank you for your support!
I know you probably know this but I found a way to relearn the b actuator with the TCM without the help of a code reader. @midnightgrim9623 yeah, if you get a used one from the same year model focus. Junkyard. Look for one that's shinier looking than the rest of the transmission. That indicates it's been replaced
@ is it possible to buy a new one online. I’ve seen a few that said they have been pre programmed and should just be able to put it in and work but I’m skeptical
Got my tcm replaced yesterday on my 2012 ford focus at 120k kms, can anyone suggest if this new tcm can last long? Because ford replaced it one time and they said they cannot give any warranty on it, I’m kind of scared and thinking to sell the car, so if anyone knows how long these new tcms last, please let me know!
I have a 2014 ford focus se with an automatic transmission. About a week ago when I went to pull out of a parking lot, it felt like it was slipping in lower rpm’s/ gears. It would do this for a few seconds on the road where it felt like I was revving it in neutral, and then get going and shift up. Me and a buddy of mine checked, drained, and refilled the ATF and the problem didn’t go away. It threw me a code [ P07A5(1/2) ] for a “Transmission Friction Element "B" Stuck On”. I was wondering what i would need to do to fix this issue, whether or not it’s a TCM problem or something like the clutch being burnt up.
That's probably a seizing clutch fork. I would replace the clutch, forks and slave cylinder. The actuator motors may be worn as well from the seizing forks. I've got a playlist full of videos to help you out. Including how to pull the transmission out in the driveway and replace the clutch without any special tools
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles thank you so much! i wasn’t too sure on what was wrong with it. my buddy said he thought it was the clutch getting burnt up by the tcm because when we changed the atf, it smelled burnt. i’ll definitely be checking out your videos and diagnosing further though.
I have 2018 Focus SE Hatch, has the 2.0 and the DPS6. Supposed to be the revised one blah blah blah.. Been having shifting issues, will rev up high through 1st, drop hard into second then move into 3rd decently. Then from there the slightest acceleration will cause it to downshift like I’m flooring it. Haven’t pushed it further than that. I have been able to reset the system and that buys me about 4 maybe 5 start ups before it reverts back to that. Has secondary DTCs of P07A5 and P07A5-00. Runs well enough upon resetting and doesn’t miss gears but once it malfunctions the only thing to get it going again is that reset.
I would turn clutch B by hand to see if the fork is sticking. If you don't have the tool for that, you can swap the upper and lower actuators top to bottom to see if it changes from P07a5 to P07a3 to confirm actuator motor failure. If it stays the same, then youll need a clutch and fork replacement
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles if it adds any context to the situation, I drove this car into a deep mud puddle in late April (please don’t ask). Knowing that actuator B is in the bottom is it possible that corrosion could be seizing that actuator and it’s coming to light now?
@@Ktallica It's very possible that either the actuator or the clutch fork is damaged from the mud. You can start with the actuators and go from there if you'd like
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles I’ll give it a go. Thank you for the insight. Not unreasonable to believe that clutch components are going, considering the trans they are in. 102k miles.
Great video👍. I replaced my tcm on a 2013 Ford Fiesta with a used one and when I tried to program it there is no communication with the tcm so I bought one at the Ford dealership and I installed it and also there is no communication with that one either. Would you have any advice? I would appreciate it . Thank you.
Thank you. Did you program the tcm? If so, inspect the harness going to the tcm, and inspect the fuses. Look for any loose grounds. Double check your work. I've got a video for Fiesta tcm replacement as well. Maybe that will help.
I bought a used TCM. Do I need to download the old one? And does the adaptive learn modify the new to old TMC? Because my old one doesn't function right.
If it came from the same year focus, it should have the same calibration. So you shouldn't need to program it. But you'll want to do an adaptive learn so it shifts correctly
I took mine off and unfortunately broke the latch on the top harness. Then right when i was about to put the one on from the junkyard, i noticed it had one pin broken off, which is probably why it was still at the junkyard. I have since confirmed that the dealership will change it for me for free but now i need to put my original one back on to limp it over there and also the because i don't want them to tell me they can't do it because it's been touched by somebody else (me). Will it be ok since the harness is tightly connected even though the clip is broken off? It looks like you can buy the clip online. Also will it need to be programmed just from being taken off and put back on? Or will it just plug and play since it wasn't plugged into another vehicle and the vehicle wasn't plugged into another TCM? Thanks!
I know this is an older post but hope you still monitor it. I was at the stage of disconnecting the upper harness and had the grey clip disengaged and only the cover came off. The base of the plug is still seated firmly and I cannot get the cover re-attached. Is there a trick, or did I really F-up?
I would pop the cover back on if possible because you need that to move the slides. If you can get it to click into place, just try to firmly press the cover inwards as you work the slide release lever down
@BigBensCarsAndCycles So, I went back to your video, and saw that the gears had not completely raised the clips above the seated portion of the plug. So it took a while, but I was able to line everything back up and pushed the clip completely to the bottom, therefore releasing the plug and was able to disengage it then. However, the bottom one was a B*tch to get off. I sprayed lube, tried a flat tip screw driver, cut my hands, forearm, and elbow before it finally released. I guess Ford requires a sacrifice before yielding!🙄 Thanks for the video and the response!
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles awesome. Thanks. Hopefully I can find one at the junkyard. I jumped my car and all these issues happened. Replaced battery cables and still got codes p287b p2837 and p286f. My car won’t reverse and kinda heats up before I can start driving fr . Is it the tcm that needs replacing or the actual transmission itself ?
My check engine light popped up on my 2012 ford focus se. (P090C) which I figured out was my clutch actuator B. Hi, it depends on what year model focus that other tcm was installed on. K00 means it was blank when built and then programmed on a focus. You can try installing it, doing a clutch adaptive learn, and seeing if it shifts properly to confirm

Hi, since there's no code, it's probably an issue with the clutch & forks, or possibly a clutch actuator motor. You can swap locations of actuators a & b to see if the issue transfers to the other gears
take the upper actuator and move it to the bottom position, see if the code changes to a P090C from a P0902. If it changes, replace both actuators, if it doesn't change - then inspect for damaged wires going to the upper actuator. Replace the TCM if theres no damaged wires.

@user-ut4ts7qv6i yes but before you replace the clutch, try switching the positions of the upper and lower clutch actuators to see if the code changes to a p07a5. If so replace actuators not the clutch

There are 2 black slides on each side of the connector. These slides are what the lever moves. Since the lever is broken, you will have to manually move each slide. I would put some penetrating oil on the connector, then work the slides up with a 90 degree pick. Once they're up enough, grab gently with some needle nose pliers and work each slide up side-by-side until the connector comes off.
Ford dealerahips will charge and not honor letter to see what the issue is even though the replacement says free of charge labor and repair....Found on road dead is not just a sticker.
Hi, they are not supposed to charge you anything if the issue is with the TCM. If your issue is due to anything other than a TCM, then you are responsible for paying diagnosis and repair. Hope this helps!
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Thats the sneaky coin flip, most buyers arent mechanics so you got to pay to find out and hope it is the TCM. Dealership should be able to tell if it is TCM or not then ask if you want to pay for the labor and parts required if it isnt the TCM. I tried asking just for a replacement of TCM without anything else so that after the replacement if problem still occurs THEN I could continue the issue rabbit hole. Hello, just bought a 2014 Ford Focus SE, low mileage just under 40K, engine looks very healthy but transmission is been acting up. In low rpm and low mph especially from 0-35 mph it feels slippery, sometimes car shakes but once you are on highway there's no issues at all even at 85mph. Does anyone had a similar issue? Thanks a lot
Congrats on your focus. Sounds nice. So, The dual clutch is shuddering. You can either drive it hard once in a while to mitigate the shudder, or replace the clutch. LuK makes a kit which comes with everything for $650
So I replaced the clutch kit using Luk as recommended by many ppl and the solenoids clutch actuator but after 2 months I'm now getting check engine and throws code P090C which means the clutch actuators but the mechanic is telling me is gotta be the Tranny control module. Any thoughts on that? He also said to check with the dealer since it might be a recall or still under warranty but car is a 2014 with 44K miles
@jagadeeswarreddyxrwbjvdxxt6892 After spending money, it turned out it was the TCM (transmission control module). The car is finally running smooth as a whistle
Thanks for watching. You will need to have the TCM programmed before the engine will start. You can have the dealership program it with "as-built" configuration data.
If you're using Forscan to program your new tcm, make sure to download the data from the old module before installing the new one.
Codes are P0700:00-2F, and P0606:00-AF
Please help!

Since your premium care is covering 10k I think thats still a good deal for you to cover the rest, as the car is worth it considering how low of miles it has.

can this be done for a ford festia?
Yes, I've got a (fair/low) quality video on that I made a couple years ago
I hope you didn't put atf in it. It does not take atf. It takes dual clutch transmission fluid.
102k miles.

@BigBensCarsAndCycles thank you! Your Awesome!
Thanks!
From what I’ve found online, these tcms are usually plug n play if it’s the same model
Thank you very much!

Same issue with me on a car I got at Copart, shows no codes and CVT was “replaced” under the recall but I reached out the previous owner and he said he NEVER had any recall work done to it. Cargad shows it did tho and it’s a 1 owner car🤷🏻♂️
Did yours finally get to where it wouldnt engage in any gear?
I recently got a 2012 Fiesta SE automatic and the issue is hard to diagnose.
Codes are P0700:00-2F, and P0606:00-AF
Please help!

Had my cars TCM replaced on my 2014 Ford Focus SE. Unfortunately that would not be the last issue I had with the transmission. Modulators went out, replaced. How to get it off if the top connector won't come off even when the gray lever is broken and is already in release position
