Love the video… you can stake the ends of the beds so that you can get one more year out of it.
I’m in Brevard zone 9b and have sweet potatoes growing year round. I harvest every 6 months. Harvested vines and greens go to my chickens. I cure them in a Rubbermaid container covered with a towel under the bed in the spare room.

The sweet potatoes have taken over my yard 😭 I cleared all the vines and thought I got all the roots august 25th. It came back full force and now you cant tell that I harvested 30 lbs just THREE months ago. It's a blessing and a curse 😅

I'm glad you say that...anout just putting the vines back and you still got potatoes. I was thinking you have to do all that putting it in water and usung a whole potato to root etc.
Believe it or not, we do get flowers up here in Oregon! We are near Salem, and in September/October, they start blooming for us once our daylight hours start to recede. But I actually just got a couple flowers a week or two ago from a plant I have in a grow bag. It's been in full sun this whole time, so it was definitely a surprise to see them this early!

I love this channel! I'm in northeast Florida and waited too late to plant sweet potatoes. Looking forward to this in 2024.
On your bed. Your panels look fine. Just get some sheet metal corners at your local big box store cut to length and screw to your panels. Get the painted corners for metal buildings/roofs.
That is what I was thinking. Another thing you can do is drive some stakes in the ground as support for the panels. Could use some rebar or pipe. Maybe 2 on the shorter sides and 3 on the longer sides.
That small round damaged spots on your sweet potatoes are from a wire worm. Its a small yellow-orange colored worm. It has two antenna on the front of the body. It's the nymph of the click beetle. I recognized the damage when you pulled up the first sweet potato. (You can Google wire worms to read more about them.). Store bought potatoes and sweet potatoes can have the same damage. You can find them when just digging in the soil. I try to just relocate them to an area that does not have any root crops. Also, sweet potatoes like quite a bit of water while developing. I learned that from a lady that grew sweet potatoes for a living.
I hope next year you will have a better harvest now that you have more sun on the bed.

I just harvested sweet potatoes for my first time. I only had 2 30 gallon grow bags but I got a nice crop. It was so exciting digging into the dirt & pulling out potatoes. Sorry your crop wasn't good this year, I'm sure next time will be better. Thanks for all the tips & tricks.

I just harvested my sweet potato beds last week and netted about 30 pounds. Much better than in past years. And yes, they all had nearly full sun.
Yes I saw the nodes, you can use 2 pipes on the outside to hold the soil in place.
That was one beautiful sweet potato, ya made me laugh when you got so excited over it cause I do that too😂
Great video, very informative. I also have pest issues with my sweet potatoes under ground but I have noticed that the darker colored sweet potatoes are more resistant to the bugs or don’t attract them as much as the orange ones. I also harvest them at 3 months after planting to avoid pests and because I like them on the smaller side.

Why don't you just take those bolts out of the corners and use some deck screws and put a 2x4 on the inside corners to hold them together since you still want to use the bed for another season. I couldn't afford beds but I found lots of pallets for free, and it took lots of work to disassemble them but now I have 5 beautiful wood raised garden beds. The key is to work with what you got.
I actually had weevils in my sweet potatoes this year.
Hey - I'm new to Florida living in Bradenton, but I have grown sweet potatoes before - in Oklahoma. I used potato sacks with a velcro closing door. I planted the starts ( but you just told me I can do the whole potato :-) ) and only started with a bit of soil and mulch. A few days later as that grew, I just kept putting the little nodes in the soil wrapping the vine around and around and adding more soil and mulch as things grew. I had 5 bags of them which yielded about 40 pounds of sweet potatoes! I liked not having to use a lot of space to grow them - true the vine grew everywhere, but the actual harvesting area was small. Would these maybe work here? I have potatoes VERY ready to plant. I figured I'd use the sacks to also kill the grass so that when I get around to getting some of those awesome raised bed planters you talk about, I'd already have the space ready! What do you think? Tell me soon!!!!
Why don't you use a pipe or rebar to keep the side of the bed up since you are still using it?
We planted sweet potatoes in July. I just tried to harvest. There were mostly nothing in the ground. 2 very small finger sized tubers.
What did I do wrong? Please help!
This has been my 3rd sweet potato harvest. First year was in ground planting, then subsequent plantings were in raised beds. By far the best way to go is raised beds! My greatest harvest was this year, about 30 lb.! My crop were in ground for about 5 months. Sometimes you'll have more insect damage or gnarly looking tubers if they are left in ground too long.. Jacqueline, do you dig down in the beds? Often there is "gold" in them thar beds! Always enjoy your videos...I'm viewing from Charlotte County 10a.

Do you have problems with white fly? I tried this year and my vines were covered with pests.
Hey! I planted my sweet potatoes in May in the ground, full sun, in topsoil enriched with compost & perlite. I checked them last month & didn't find any sweet potatoes! Why?! The vines are growing like gang busters and one variety has flowers. Are they not ready? Did I not dig deep enough?

For the life of me, I cannot find white sweet potatoes. I've checked a few Publix locations, Farmer Mikes and Farmer Joes. Should I order them online? I live in south west Florida.

I tried growing some this spring and it did NOT take off at all - pretty sure because it got too much shade. I’m in zone 8b - would now be a good time to pull the fines and put them in some fresh compost in another area that gets more sunshine? Or would the frosts were going to get as we head into winter herein northwest florida kill it? 🙈
Can you put sand bags on the end to secure it?
I think the affected potatoes will continue to infect your new potatoes. I was told to rotate my planting for to avoid infect your new potatoes
What are the white sweet potatoes called they taste like potatoes?
They're called white sweet potatoes and they taste like richer, buttery regular potato. We now love them and found the organic variety (so it will sprout) at Whole Foods. Never had any luck finding them at Publix or farmers market.

Maybe try duct tape at the end of your bed.
So I started to harvest my sweet potatoes. The first two were good.but the third one…I kept digging trying to get it out. When I finally did it was 15 in long and maybe 12 in wide. Wow! Only thing is that the skin is not thick at all. Don’t want it not to cure properly so what should I do?
