The haunting grave built by guilty husband who betrayed her | Lawnswood Cemetery Pt2

  • The cemetery movement came into being because of gross overcrowding in urban churchyards and public awareness of the health hazards associated with it. The first cemetery which opened as a private enterprise in 1819 was The Rosary in Norwich. Other cemeteries followed throughout the country. Leeds General Cemetery was opened at Woodhouse in 1835. It was unconsecrated and used by dissenters. Burmantofts Cemetery (Beckett Street) was opened in 1845.
By the 1870’s St Michael’s churchyard in Headingley was nearing capacity and a suitable site for a new cemetery was found at Lawns Wood. It was close to the Leeds-Otley turnpike road and was chosen for its scenic attractiveness and location in a less populated area.
George Corson (1829-1910) the noted Leeds architect, designed the lodge and chapels and also the layout of the cemetery. His design for the cemetery was intended to be ‘simple and of a character to harmonize with the surrounding scenery’ (quoted in Leeds Historic Parks Inventory, 1996). He retained a border of trees around the cemetery and selected the finest tree specimens as permanent ornaments. The landscaping was carried out by William Gay (1814-93) who had previously landscaped Undercliffe Cemetery in Bradford. The cemetery opened in 1875 and on 31 December of that year the Church of England portion was consecrated by the Bishop of Ripon. The first burial, that of Henry Sharp, took place on 23 January 1876.

The Sam Wilson grave was awesome. Very interesting as well. I agree with you about why the door was open on Ethel’s grave memorial. It makes alot of sense what you said. In the video you mentioned that it might be boring just walking around. I beg to differ because even if there isn’t any “special” grave marker it’s still nice to see the other markers and different parts of the cemetery. As always nice walk Dan 👍🏻

What is this that I hear? You are not going to stop talking through your deadwalks, are you? That is the main reason I watch you! And the fact that sometimes what you say is hilarious! You know that British humor! That was a sad story about Ethel. Some men are such scoundrels!

My late mother was a Leeds woman. She told me that Ethel would stand outside the door to welcome her husband home from work, and that is why she is so depicted. It seems that Ethel was " t' one wi' brass "

That first headstone. The couple dying within a month of each other. Having laid to rest 3 of their children already. The other 3 followed their parents in death not many years after. None of them very old. What a tragic tale. All so young when they passed. I treasure grave stones. They tell such stories and allow us to remember people for just a moment who may long be forgotten 💔

The grave of Ethel. Absolutely stunning but i do however get a feeling of course of sadness, but also a feeling of unrest. Like a feeling of always waiting and Always searching. A feeling of frustration disappointed and a feeling of all is lost and what went wrong. Such a sad feeling that comes from her. Respect ♥️

Great stuff. Looking at all these old graveyards just goes to show how religious people were back then. Nowadays religious stuff like weddings and funerals and christenings etc are done more for ir tradition not religion. There is something deeply macabre but fascinating about graveyards.

I wonder if they exhumed Ethel whether they would find arsenic in her tissues.
I would put money on the portico she is standing in being an exact replica of the front of her house.
I suggest that her husband was glad that she had just left the house.
    Just an idea.

there is a grave in a small cemetery near me kind of in the same vein. My grandma told me that the husband was very bad to his wife and was afraid she would back to haunt him so he had a huge angel statue put on her grave. Either that she would see the angel and be inspired to go to heaven and give up her grudge or because it was so heavy it would keep her from rising. spooooooky
