  • St Anne's is a church in the village of Woodplumpton in Lancashire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the Diocese of Blackburn, and the archdeaconry of Lancaster, and the deanery of Garstang. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. The churchyard at St Anne's is the supposed burial place of a 17th-century alleged witch named Meg Shelton.
Meg Shelton (Died 1705) known as the "Fylde Hag" was an English woman accused of witchcraft. Her grave can be seen at St. Anne's Church in Woodplumpton, now part of the City of Preston district of Lancashire.
Meg Shelton's real name is recorded by St Anne's Church as Margery Hilton. She was found dead in her cottage, crushed between a wall and a large barrel. According to local rumour, she was able to use her magic to make crops fail, turn milk sour and to cause illness in cattle. After her death, it was said that whenever they buried her in the graveyard, every so often her corpse would keep digging up to the surface. To prevent her from rising again, they buried her face down and had a large boulder placed on top of it. An alternative telling suggests that she was buried head down in a narrow shaft, accounting for the relatively small size of the boulder

My 11th great grandfather was John Minterne The Dark Conjurer of Batcombe in Dorset, England. There is an amazing story of him making a deal with the devil. He is buried at St. Mary Magdalene church in an ivy covered grave. He was married to Margaret Wolley and had ties to Queen Elizabeth the 1st. I should think the idea or practice of not burying accused witches in "consecrated" grounds (church yards) came about as a threat and punishment (like a form of excommunication) because Wicca elevates the feminine divine in opposition to the male dominated patriarchal Papacy/Catholic Church. And Wicca celebrates nature as opposed to a single male figure.

I’m going with this woman figured out the approximate shelf span of milk, knew enough about agriculture to tell when a farmer would have a bad yield and knew enough about livestock to tell when they were coming down with something. Also most likely she wasn’t actually dead. She was likely alive, probably unconscious with very shallow breathing, and when she came to she found a way to dig herself out (911 operators literally have protocols and training to talk someone through digging themselves out when buried alive) and kept doing it as many times as she had to until they put a boulder on her and probably murdered her

Once while in school we had a field trip to our town’s cemetery lol. It was very interesting living in Michigan we were shown the grave warmer. Used to break the frost in the ground and the cold storage for winter months. We have 3 cemeteries that have cold storage crypt’s you can see. That is one thing I’ve noticed your cemetery doesn’t have cold crypt’s, your ground must not freeze. Of course the cold crypt’s are no longer used because of backhoes but neat historical. 🇺🇸

Not just women were accused as witches sometimes children men were accused of it for many reasons half of it was greed because then their land and property would be auctioned off to the town. Usually to those who run the bank or the head of the town aka the mayor or chamberlain depending on their title.

This may be a stupid question. Since these stones have sometimes several family members names/death dates, does it mean they kept burying them on top of each other sharing one grave? The graves look small to be side by side. Thank you for the interesting places. Here in the USA our land was the "New world" and we are limited on the age of our cemeteries.

My parents share a grave and they are buried "on top" of one another. My father is twelve feet down and my mother is six feet down. It's called a double depth burial.
