- The Columbarium is a Grade 11 listed building and was designed by Col. A E Kirk and completed by Messrs Kirk and Tomlinson in 1933. It is a single storey building in Classical style of red brick and Portland stone with a pantile roof and marble details. Inside there is a WW2 memorial and tiers of niches containing cinerary urns. There are also niches covered by memorial stones in the cloister area and all other outside walls of the building.
The term “Columbarium” is derived from the Latin “columba” (“dove” or “pigeon”) and it originally referred to a pigeon house or dovecote. Columbaria were common during the early Roman Empire when cremation was normal practice.
The Columbarium is now full and so “Sanctums” have been provided along the inside of the low walls in the grounds of the building.
It is a stunning building and looks magnificent surrounded by the trees and landscaping and is one of the jewels of the cemetery.

Here in Michigan just about every cemetery has a columbarium now. Memorial Gardens different kind of cemetery has ground plaques no headstones and mausoleum entombment and niches. Niches can be glass front or plaques. The little rings probably held small glass vase for flowers. The placement of all the niches is mind boggling like a stone path on the wall. 🇺🇸

They didn't pay the rent on their spaces, so got evicted, they found somewhere else (cheaper or cost free) for the ashes
hence the empty spaces.

@@deadgoodwalks that will be neet it’s nice in Britain you can travel so quickly from one place to another. I was in England with my grandma to see relatives way back in 85 and miss it. Britain has so much history and is beautiful. Even the grave yards are fascinating. Lots of history. Can’t wait to see your Scotland video
I didn’t watch the video from beginning, so I wanted to ask you, what kind of socles with holes in their lids: are these socles for flowers, or for burning incense. But after looking at your reverse move, I realized that it was for flowers.🧐
The problem comes when they are abandoned and fall In to disrepair the cost of moving the Individual is not cost effective and few are willing to take the cost on so the disrepair becomes worse and worse often family has passed ,and there is no one to push for change.
What are those things in the middle of the path with holes on top of them?

I did a little research on Clara Beatrice Mitchell.
I used info from the East Leeds Historical and Archaeological Society about a talk they held with someone representing the Friends of Lawnswood Cemetery.
If you notice, after her name, it says "M. SC" which means she had a master's degree in science. Extremely unusual for women in this time period. Especially given that she would have gotten the degree many years before the 1940s. Vast majority of colleges wouldn't have admit women in her day and those that did would have only offered a very limited number of subjects to study.
She was a teacher and apparently lived in Canada for a while, but moved back to Leeds. As for the Ch¡nese on her plaque, this says she didn't have any known ties to Ch¡na or its language, but her neighbor was Ch¡nese and it's thought that her neighbor was then likely involved in her memorialization.
Sometimes people die at an old age and don't have close family to sort of personalize their resting place and that might be why her neighbor got involved.
Right, so the problem was that I said a certain country's name. Replaced the i's with upside down exclamation marks and now it's ok.
