@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I really enjoy the "dudes on a board" games and they are all $100+ so sometimes she had to reign me in. TMNT, Power Rangers, and Cthulhu: Death May Die all delivering this year. So naturally she's like "Another one?!" When she hears it's Batman she caves.
Agree completely on the cost. I passed on the first KS because of no Solo option. The community made one, but if you didn't buy it (sooooooooooooo expensive) you cannot get it without a second mortgage (maybe not that bad, but close). Also wish it didn't have so many minis (which drove the cost up). Standees would have been just fine and just as immersive.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I believe that the community has already made a solo variant. It's on BGG, and I think it uses a system similar to what they did for Conan.
Cody: HOW do I remember this game!!!??? This game hit KS about the time I had to make a decision on "Warfighter: Pacific". Fortunately I had some money, but it was either go "all in" with Batman (YET ANOTHER, big mini game) or score Warfighter Europe and Pacific (PLUS all the expansion decks!!!). Trust me it was a tough call, but "Warfighter" won. I had to ask myself how many times would this game get to my (unfortunately) solo board game table... not as much as Warfighter would. Currently, I have backed "John Carter of Mars", "Tainted Grail", "Solomon Kane", "Vengeance", and one or two other big mini games. Honestly, I believe that this game is BIG TIME fun, but maybe it all comes down to ... "Who's your BIG DADDY?"... Given this option, I'll take John Carter (love the books... read them as a teenager), "Hellboy" (backed that one too), and Solomon Kane... You're right, you can't buy them all. I will be interested in seeing what the new launch premiers. *** Have you given a thought to review any of the Legion War Games like "Maori Wars", or some of the smaller battles they put out? How about "Armageddon Wars" (by Flying Pig)? Great review. Food for thought.
Thanks. I haven't looked into those other titles. Maybe down the line. I know what you mean about picking your KS battles. Like I say I rarely back on KS these days, but a Batman theme on the Conan system was just too good to refuse. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with Season 2 as well.
Cody! You’re quite excited with how fun it is, for sure, cuz ya ‘re light on the reasons why it’s fun. I had to watch twice and now am pretty sure I didn’t hear much pro con type stuff. But ya clearly had fun!
I neglected to mention the rulebook is bad. Which it is. I mentioned that I loved the spending energy system, which is why I love it. It really gives you some great choices with regard to what you will do each turn. I think it's a very cool system.
Yikes. That's like having a drunken racoon as your spirit animal.... or maybe I'm still holding that whole ranbow striped velour shirt thing against him.
I bought it based on the good reviews about Conan (which it’s based on) and “Becuase it’s Batman”. As for price unless you have to have it all or a particular character the base game is plenty of content for the game.
Probably not. I don't think I'll have the time and honestly, I don't think I've played that many games this year that were published this year. I took that big break for the first three months or so of the year so I'm just now playing catchup. Thank you!
Great review brother, we have it as well and I'll tell ya, that rulebook is not doing anyone any favors. Once you get past the kinda steep learning curve of the symbology, it all gels together very well indeed! Did you have any problems with the symbology in terms of learning them quickly?
Yes I did, and I failed to mention that in the review. The rulebook is horrible. Not the worst I've ever seen (by a long shot), but really not very good. Still, as you say, once you get past the learning curve it really is a fantastic game!
That's my problem with KS games. Especcially CMON. Blood Rage, Rising Sun, Zombicide. They are amazing games. But all those KS stuff that missing... ehhh. They released a second Blood Rage KS instead of putting it in the stores... shame.
Yeah I love Will Wheaton, I would love him even more if the guy would be sane and not Soy Boy Trump Deranged Looney. But hey I personally loved his show on Geeks And Sundry Tabletop. What a shame he doesn't do them anymore, at least for now.
I keep going back and forth on this one based on reviews. Yesterday NPI kinda were meh on it, SUSD seem to be landing on the “it’s fine” side. Can you better elaborate on the specific moments you find fun? What other game does it remind you of? Would this game be fun if the minis were just Standees? Have you thought about the possibility that your purchase of this one affects your ability to see it objectively as a critic because it’s possible you need to justify the purchase? (That’s not a criticism of your or your review by the way, legit question because these things happen to all of us with Kickstarter). Love the channel! Hoping you can help me decide one way or another.
Thanks James. I've actually considered that possibility very much, and that's one of the reasons why I tried to qualify my recommendation at the end with "It's a lot of money." To be honest, I like minis, but they don't make or break a game for me, and to be honest, there is so much stuff in the box, I sometimes think it would have been better with standee or tokens just for storage purposes. What I love about the game? I love the system. I love the choices that it gives you with regard to how you are going to spend your energy. It feels very organic and very natural. In an actual fight you spend your energy and have to decide how to husband your strength for movement, blocks and attacks - like a boxer. It means you are forced to choose every turn just how you will do every little thing you want to do - but not in a way that feels tedious or like you are micromanaging things. I love playing the villain, and having the power to move different villain groups, a big baddie, or an event. You can't activate one more than once quickly or it will cost you heavily. It's a great balancing mechanism but it makes for some very tough choices. It's one of those systems that is so simple you're amazed no one thought of it before, and that it's not more widespread in games today. I love the variety or characters, villain, equipment, and missions. And, I do love the IP quite a bit. This is a case where the theme makes the game. When I first heard about this game I thought they were going to make it so that Batman had the river system while the other players were bad guys. I still think that is a variation that could work somehow (though I don't know exactly how). But what they came up with is really amazing. As I mentioned to another commenter, I actually haven't played a lot of 2019 games this year, but so far of the ones I have played this is far and away my favorite.
They did a campaign (Narrows Chronicles:An Arranged Marriage) for the villains but you needed the vs in order to play it as well as the campaign itself. They gave you Bane, Joker, Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, Penguin, Riddler and Two Face. I’ve seen a Hero dash board for Poison Ivy in season two as well as for the Suicide Squad which comes with a new campaign for them.
Cody, glad to see you back in action. I also loved Wil in the Princess Bride... ;-)
Ha! Thanks!
I think Wil Wheaton best showed his acting chops supplying liquor to the double deuce.
My favorite Will scene was from the movie Toy Soldiers. It was a Red Dawn rip off. Anyway, in it Will's character is riddled with bullets. Perfect.
Let me know when the game intro is over.... lol
I missed it the first time, but my wife gave the go ahead on backing the 2nd one.
Glad that you got permission. Don't want to cross the spouse!

I had the same problem with Conan - no coop/solo mode.

It NEVER would have made $4.4Mil with Standees.

That is the question. Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or... blah, blah, blah....

I don't see anything, but I don't know if I can forgive the blasphemy of a Marvel reference in the comments of the DC game. ;)
