I need to give this show credit for one thing. Capturing just how chaotic the area was. I didn’t even notice the two men, near center of screen, walking towards the camera with guns in plain view until I saw the clip a second time. And then I had to watch it a third to catch their faces. You always hear about witness’s not actually seeing anything ….. but that 30 seconds shows perfectly just HOW and WHY you don’t see something like this, even if it’s fairly blatant.

My son conducted an experiment for a school project, with consent of a college professor, during a college class. His sister walked from the back of the classroom to the front, gave something to the professor, then left. After several minutes, we presented a photographic lineup of six girls, including his sister, all her age. Only two of about 25 students in the class picked the photo of his sister as the one who had entered the classroom. Eyewitness testimony involving people who aren't known to the witnesses is problematic.

    • @Starfire861
      @Starfire861 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

My class did a similar experiment in high school. One of the other teachers put on a track suit and hat, ran in, grabbed a backpack and fled the classroom. We all had to give a description of what the “thief” looked like, and none of us could give an accurate description.

    So here's what happened:
    Spoilers:
The dead guy was cooperating with investigations to help them catch members of the Rissian Mafiya who were smuggling blood diamonds into the states. Initially they think that he was killed for this. However, that later turns out not to be the case.
His wife had him killed. She hired the Mafya to kill him because he refused to give her a divorce under Jewish Law, which would have made her an outcast in her community and also prevented her from getting custody of her children. She denies the charges.
The charges end up being dropped because they can't prove anything (the money from the stolen diamonds was donated to the local Rabbi). Since they have no other evidence, they withdraw the charges and she goes free. She will likely be praised in her community for protecting them from the Russian Mafiya, and that she will end up setting an example for women who can't get a religious divorce.

    "All in the Family"
    some spoilers:
The victim's wife wanted a divorce, but he refused under Jewish law, and
would mean shunning by their community and her not getting custody of
    the kids.
She hires the Russian mafia to kill him, and takes the money from the
diamonds and gives it to her rabbi. When this is confirmed, the charges
against her are dropped, as her community will see her as a hero fighting
against the mafia and setting an example for women who unfairly can't
    get a religious divorce.

There is a reason eyewitness testimony is repeatedly proven to be the least reliable form of evidence.
There have been cases of women being assaulted for up to 45 minutes, face-to-face with their attacker, who still picked the wrong guy out of the lineup.
Perceptions are easily misleading, especially for survivors of high-stress events.
