1984 has to be one of the greatest years for movies. Besides Gremlins, you also had Ghostbusters, The Karate Kid, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Beverly Hills Cop, Police Academy, and Footloose. What a great time to be a kid!
viewing the vlogger's take on "Gremlins" was a delightful escape, injecting joy into my routine. The chaotic, unpredictable nature of the film resonated with my need for a break. Their reactions mirrored my surprise, making the experience relatable and enjoyable. The dark humor added a unique touch. Speaking of well-being, it's a crucial aspect, and this light-hearted diversion served as a welcomed mental break. Grateful for such moments in my day.
“I have never seen anything more chaotic than, Gremlins….” Said by everyone that hasn’t seen Gremlins 2: The New Batch. 😂 Fun facts: The set they use for the town was the same set, for Back to the Future. That’s not snow, it’s laundry detergent. If you look closely at the background when the father is at the convention, you can see a young Steven Spielberg. Gizmo is voiced by Howie Mandel.
You can also see the time machine from the movie The Time Machine. In fact, it's there in one scene and then, following a short cutaway, it disappears.
The mechanics in WW2 would say that gremlins were the reason why their machinery broke down. It's like a "bug" for computers nowadays. It was a joke, but they'd say "yeah, that plane has a gremlin in it".
Everyone is scared for mom at first. The little monsters were in HER kitchen, messing with HER cookies. As a kid watching the movie, I was more scared for the gremlins safety.
Just for clarification of the origin of gremlins... During World War 2, when things happened to planes that either could not be or would not be explained, the blame fell on gremlins. Gremlins were the blame for many issues as both a joke, and sincere unknown issue. Knowing this real historical lore can make this movie better! Most people never understand the neighbor's paranoia, the behind the scenes chaos, or the odd determination to just break stuff. Love ya reacts V!
If you watch the Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet", William Shatner's character talks about gremlins when he's wondering what the creature on the wing of the plane might be. Rod Serling beat Joe Dante to putting gremlin monsters on screen by about twenty years.
The famous Pilot Charles Lindbergh had an experience with Gremlisn in 1927. He claimed he could actually see them tampering with the plane during his flight.
14:23 - Okay, this is one of my favorite gags in the movie. In the background is supposed to be the time machine from the H.G. Wells story. At 14:35, the machine is gone, and the people that were admiring it are now trying to figure out what happened. 🤣🤣🤣 17:50 - You have no idea. 20:56 - The song if "The Gremlin Rag," by Jerry Goldsmith. 21:08 - Because it's the same actor. 😉 27:11 - It was NEVER a weird time to kiss Phoebe Cates. NEVER! 😆
Let's not forget Robby the Robot from 1956's "Forbidden Planet". Also, the town's called Bedford Falls, which is the locale for the iconic movie "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart. And there's the movie playing on TV, "invasion of the Body Snatchers" a sci-fi thriller about doppelganger infiltration 9and remade at least 3 more times). Basically, this film is peppered with all sorts of references for cinephiles.
"Where did they get cigarettes?" For you younguns, a brief history lesson. Back in the 80s, and before, you'd find vending machines with cigarettes in them. A bar would be almost guaranteed to have one. Convenience was a much higher priority than making sure that a kid didn't have access to them.
Started smoking in the mid 2000's. In central europe you have vending machines with cigarettes in walking distance pretty much everywhere. (In a big city atleast.) Never knew it different. The only change they made was, I think it was in the mid 2000's, that you have to verify you are old enough to legally buy cigarettes by holding your bank card to the machine. In bars/clubs they might even still have vending machines without age verification. Since theoretically (!) minors shouldn't be able to be there in the first place there is no need for age verification at the machine. It's a while since I was clubbing so I don't know if they are still there. Also for a couple years now we are not allowed to smoke in buildings which sucks, especially when clubbing. So they might have removed those since you don't smoke 2 packs of cigarettes in a night out anymore because you have to go outside everytime you want to smoke. :I And when I was in germany I was surprised they sold cigarettes in the grocery store at the cashier. o0 So a gremlin could just get them from there when he is plundering food from there anyway.
Yah, there were vending machines, but they were in places a kid should not be alone, if at all. "My goodness! A machine that sells cigarettes? In a strip club?"
The mom was badass in this movie. Coming up with creative ways of killing gremlins in her kitchen, like blending one's head in the mixer, and microwaving another.
Everyone knows the midnight rules. As an 80's child, they were amazing at charming you and terrifying you at the same time. I don't want to about it.. brilliant and love it.
I was born in '79 and movies like Gremlins are why I maintain that we had the best childhood films. I'm enjoying watching your journey to see what we saw but with fresh eyes. You're a really observant viewer.
The character in the beginning, Rand Peltzer, is played by the actor Hoyt Axton. Hoyt was not only an actor, but a famous singer/songwriter. He wrote many hit songs, such as "The Pusher" which was recorded by Steppenwolf and featured in the 60s hippie flick, "Easy Rider." He also wrote "The No-No Song" by Ringo Starr, and his biggest hit, Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World." No, not about Christmas. It's about an alcoholic bullfrog named Jerimiah.
I haven't seen this since I was a kid. I watched it so many times that seeing it now causes lots of forgotten memories to come back with different scenes like the Dad's inventions malfunctioning, the gremlins being blended and microwaved, and the old lady shot out of her house with her motorized stair lift. It is also weird to watch it in high def instead of that old VCR picture quality!
This movie was marketed to kids. I was 7 years old when it came out & saw it in theaters. I was obsessed!!! I Had all the toys, coloring books, action figures, & games. To this day one of my favorite movies of all time.
Even after 40 years, I still have no idea how old Billy and Kate are supposed to be. Billy is old enough to drive, and both of them are old enough to work in a bank; and to be sitting in a bar. But at the same time, Billy pals around with Corey's character while looking like he is about seven to ten years older than Corey. Billy knows Mr. Hanson, the teacher, as if he is his student. He appears to be doing homework when the new Mogwai are screaming to be fed at midnight. And Billy appears to be getting toy robots and a Donkey Kong game for Christmas. Very strange.
I *think* Billy was supposed to have a little brother, that's why Corey Feldman & the childish things were here, & the brother got removed to make it more about Billy & Gizmo (something like that?)
I've seen this movie about a gazillion times within the past almost 40 years now. Never gets old with all of it's chaos 😂. I can tell you that today's generation are sometimes freaked out by the ugly gremlins, but us 80's kids growing up loved watching those little critters. Every kid wanted a pet Gizmo however, so Gizmo plush dolls that looked just like the main character were made and lots of children used to have one at home. I actually had one too back then. That's how popular this movie was back then. They also made Gremlins lunch boxes as well for when kids went to elementary schools at the time.
Watching this for the first time years ago I was expecting and prepared for monster related carnage from the Gremlins. I did not expect the film to stop at one point to give me a creepy story about a dad dressed as Santa Claus being found dead by his family in the chimney 😳😨
I never know how to react to that story... 40 years ago I thought it was so ridiculously over the top that I thought it was a hilarious dark joke... but then I realized that some people found it really disturbing, so now I'm always wanting to laugh about it but feeling that it's wrong to laugh about it...
A fantastic dark comedy that would never be made today. The sequel is almost as great. And yep, that was Jonathan Banks. He was also in "Beverly Hills Cop".
Interesting that in "Gremlins" Reinhold was an antagonist and Banks a hapless policeman, while in "Beverly Hills Cop," it was the exact opposite.@@0PsychosisMedia0
He's not a racist old man he's a World War II veteran with PTSD. Gremlins are something that cause problems in your car or electronics & you can't find the reason
True. Gremlins were a legend for a long time but came to prominence during World War 2, due to all the newly-manufactured equipment - airplanes in particular - that was forced into service before all the bugs were worked out. So all these equipment malfunctions were semi-jokingly referred to as the work of gremlins. There's even a vintage Bugs Bunny cartoon about it that gets referenced at the beginning of Gremlins 2.
@@livebackwardsAgree... I work in the Auto industry & the same way you just used the word *BUGS* is the same way the word *Gremlins* is used. When you can't track down the cause of a problem sometimes affecting multiple things
There was a rash of inventor characters in 80s films around this time, from Doc Brown in Back to the Future to Mikey in The Goonies and Professor Waxflatter in Young Sherlock Holmes-mind you, those last two were written by the same screenwriter as this film, so that's doubtlessly part of the reason (he'd later go on to direct the first two Harry Potter films).
The reason Mr. Futterman was using the term "gremlin" was because it used to be a slang term back in WWII. It's a superstitious word for describing unfortunate malfunctions to their vehicles and equipment, especially aircraft. It's also referenced in an episode of The Twilight Zone, where a gremlin is spotted on the wing of a commercial plane.
Part 2 is just as good in it's own way. oh also Dick Millers character was a war vet. In WW2 they always said that if a engine on a plane or tank broke down it was a gremlin that did it, it's also why he's not a fan of anyone not American.
"gremlin" is an old slang term from I think WWI or WWII that servicemen used to describe any weird or crazy thing that would go wrong with their equipment. Not sure if the word goes back farther than that, like maybe it's an old word meaning a goblin or something, no idea.
Yep, the term originated in the early 20th century, though there are conflicting ideas about the etymology. Roald Dahl seems to have had a significant part in popularizing the term beyond the military.
Yep. That's Jonathan Banks aka Mike from Breaking Bad. You'll also notice that the town of Kingston Falls was also used as downtown Hill Valley in Back to the Future. This movie was one of three that led to the PG-13 rating (the other two were Poltergeist and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom). It's not a coincidence that all three were Spielberg-related productions. He was trying to convince the MPAA to come up with another rating in between PG and R. It made sense. PG rated movies would never be able to get away with half the stuff they did back then.
Gremlins for the longest time only had one sequel, which is really good. After that, the franchise disappeared into development hell for decades, but earlier this year, a prequel animated series debuted on HBO Max, and it has been really well received. As for the movie itself, the creature design was both brilliant and detailed, and each Mogwaii/Gremlin had their own voice actor. At the top of the roster, Howie Mandell (Let's Make a Deal) voiced Gizmo, and Frank Welker (Fred from Scooby Doo, also Scooby for 3 decades now) voiced Stripe (Both forms), and they just killed it!
I love that the score's composer, the late great Jerry Goldsmith, is the guy on the phone behind Rand at that convention thing. Jerry cameos in Gremlins 2, too. RIP Jerry Goldsmith.
"Well, that's the story. So the next time your air-conditioner goes on the fritz, or your washing machine blows up, or your video recorder conks out, before you call the repairman, turn on all the lights. Check all the closets and cupboards. Look under all the beds. 'Cause you never can tell. There just might be a gremlin in your house."
Even as a kid, in the movie Gremlins, I questioned the "don't feed it after midnight" thing. Technically any time is after the previous midnight. When is the cut off? 5am? 6? 7? When does a Mogwi have breakfast?
----- @markysumm72 ----- - Kind of like the expression... "It's always 5 o'clock somewhere!" As for the "Never feed after Midnight!"-conundrum... USA = UTC-8 through UTC-5 China = UTC+8 (NB!...: Not adding to the confusion that China, in fact, spans almost 5 time zones, but still only uses one.) It hurts my brain just thinking about it, 'cause it doesn't make sense... -----
----- @lindala2602 ----- - Thanks for the mental image... I can never watch a 'Godzilla' movie ever again without that image popping up in my head. -----
The evil Ruby Deagle was played by Polly Holliday. She was pretty famous in the 70's from starring in the sitcom Alice. Her catchphrase was "Kiss my grits!!!"
Mrs. Deagle is like a cross between Ebenezer Scrooge and Almira Gulch, emphasis on the Almira Gulch. She'd have been a great villain for the second movie.
"Now I have another reason to hate Christmas." "What are you talking about?" "The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas. Oh, God. It was so horrible. [✂] And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus." Sweet Christ! 😳 Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁 Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Zach Galligan. Location Location Fact: The set for Kingston Falls is the same one used for Back To The Future (1985). Both movies were filmed on the Universal Studios backlot. PG-13 Rating Fact: This movie and Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984) are credited with inspiring the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. Many felt the movies were too violent for a PG rating, but not violent enough for an R rating. Practical Security Fact: Zach Galligan recounted in an interview that when the movie was made, there was no CGI, so all of the Gremlins were animatronics, each costing between $30-40,000. When everyone left the lot for the day, security would have everyone open the trunks of their cars to make sure they weren't stolen. Mythology Fact: A gremlin is a mischievous folkloric creature invented at the beginning of the 20th century to originally explain malfunctions in aircraft, and later in other machinery, processes, and their operators. Depictions of these creatures vary widely. Stories about them and references to them as the causes of especially inexplicable technical and mental problems of pilots were especially popular during and after World War II. Christmas Nightmare Fact: The "Santa Speech" proved to be controversial and studio executives insisted upon its removal because they felt it was too ambiguous as to whether it was supposed to be funny or sad. Director Joe Dante however stubbornly refused to take the scene out saying it represented this movie as a whole, which had a combination of horrific and comedic elements. Executive producer Steven Spielberg did not like the scene, but despite his creative control, he viewed this movie as Dante's project and allowed him to leave it in. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) would later hilariously lampoon this ridiculous speech, which I highly recommend.
This was a major factor that led up to the creation of the PG-13 movie rating. Parents saw Gizmo on the poster, thinking it was going to be a super-cute kid's film. They took little kids, and raised all kinds of hell, afterwards!!
The good thing about reviewing "Gremlins 2" is you don't have to wait until next Christmas. In fact, it's sort of an "Abraham Lincoln's Birthday" movie, so you can watch it in February. (It'll make sense when you watch it.)
Love the Theme, BT made a TV Ad featuring the Gremlins 10 years ago. The sequel is a must, with outstanding performances by John Glover, Christopher Lee and Robert Picardo!
They're Mogwaii until they've eaten after midnight & gone through the cocoon stage. Then they become those green, scaley, mischievous Gremlins, who i personally find hilarious as they just like mischievous kids who need constant entertainment not to necessarily kill lol. Also, Gizmo could never look evil at all, how dare you say that whe he looks precious lol
Jonathan Banks have a pretty extensive career. From top of my mind I can remember a small participation in Airplane!, and also as a henchman of the villain in Beverly Hills Cop. And yeah, the 80s were unhinged.
As some comments told you, Gremlins are usually blamed for machines not working without known cause :D Also in gaming and Fantasy there is quite lot of usage of Gremlins as a concept. For example in King's Bounty: Legends, some magical items can be upgraded to higher power levels, but to do that you have to magically "enter" the artefact and defeat gremlin army that "block" the functions :D Also in Heroes of Might & Magic 5, Wizard nation uses Gremlins in their armies and as tech-helpers.
Whenever I watched this movie as a kid, my family would pause and find an excuse for me to leave the room whenever the story of the father in the chimney came up. Not because of how dark the story was but because she ended it with "and that's how I found out there was no Santa Clause.
Yup, Mike is the way he is because he's seen some serious sh!t in his time; crazy airplane landings in Chicago, little green monsters in Kingston Falls, drug smuggling in Beverly Hills... You name it, he's been through it. I saw Gremlins in the theatre with my older brother when it came out. I was 8 years old and loved it! Still do. It felt like watching live-action Looney Tunes cartoons. Nothing felt too adult or shocking, even Cate's story, probably because it was realistic, like something you'd hear about on the news. It wasn't graphic, just sad, but at that age you don't process it the way an adult would. Anyway, great video, Vicky! Happy New Year 🎉
Love Gremlins! The mogwai are super cute (designed by Chris Walas) and the gremlins are so much chaotic fun. I can't imagine how much fun they had making each of the varied puppets, especially the bar scene. The sequel is even more fun (and not holiday themed, so don't wait too long)
Also if you know cantonese , spoilers Mogwai translates to Monster 🙂 Red letter media boys have some of the original gremlins puppets, that were used during filming, plain puppets with not much animatronics.
When I was little and saw this movie for the first time, I had so much fun. Some time later (I can't remember how much time later), when I was shopping with my mom, we passed one of those grab-and-go machines and it had Gizmo and the evil Gremlin in it. As my mother knew I was very handy with these machines, she gave me the money and told me to try my luck. I got them both out of the machine and I still have them today.
This one is dark chaos, but the second one is basically a live action Looney Toons movie that embraces all the goofy chaos that a live action cartoon should be.
There’s so much interesting trivia about this movie. Originally it was gonna be way darker. Like they were gonna kill Billy’s mom dark. It takes place during Christmas but I think it released in July. Another reason why people debate if it’s a Christmas movie. One of my all time favorites! Also love the sequel maybe a bit more. You gotta see Gremlins 2!
It was originally supposed to be even more horrific. Billy was going to come home to find his Mom's severed head in the fireplace, and more of the kills happened onscreen, instead of it just being implied that people died. The Futtermans were supposed to be killed by the snowplow. Spielberg and Dante toned down Columbus's script significantly.
The writer based the Gremlins off the descriptions of WW2 pilots and what they saw during the war. The chinese word Mogwai means Demon. The writer really did his research for the script. And some people believe they may exist in the spirit world and come into our world from time to time. 😉
i've watched this movie almost every crhistmas i can remember. when i was a kid, i named my first kitten Gizmo from this movie. the sequel leans more into the comedy vs horror.... but still worth a watch
The thing about the old WW2 vet. Alot of younger people don't realize that the concept of a "gremlin" predates the film. They were typically blamed for mysterious mechanical failures. I remember an old bugs bunny cartoon. Where a gremlin was attempting to crash a plane he was on. Then there is the infamous Twilight Zone episode that features William Shatner dealing with the same thing.
my sister had a Plush Gizmo. Then my brother and I used to move it around her room when she wasn't looking. It freaked her out for a few months until she gave it away 😂
Kitty kitty! I grew up with this movie. I can't remember if I was ever scared by it or not. I was young when this came out. I also love the sequel even more.
One of my favorite movies from one of my favorite directors, Joe Dante. I was 13 the year Gremlins came out and Joe Dante's movies were a big part of my childhood. Gremlins, Innerspace, Matinee, The Burbs, Small Soldiers, Looney Tunes: Back In Action and one of the segments in 1983's Twilight Zone: The Movie, just to name a few. One thing I love about Joe Dante's films are all the little references he puts in his films to the films and TV shows of the 50's and 60's, when he was a kid. Take Gremlins, for instance. When Billy's dad is on the phone at the convention, the guy on the other phone behind Billy's dad was the late Jerry Goldsmith, who composed the music for all of Joe Dante's films. The guy in the wheelchair doing circles around Billy's dad was Steven Spielberg. And the machine in the background at the convention was the time machine from the 1960 film The Time Machine, based upon the novel by H.G. Wells. And the guy at the gas station was Kenneth Tobey, who played one of the main characters in the 1951 version of The Thing. He had a lot of cameo appearances in Joe Dante's films before he passed away. Speaking of Jonathan Banks from Breaking Bad, he was one of the villains in Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy. There was also a sci-fi television series from the 80's called Other World, in which Jonathan Banks played the main villain throughout the series. Stuff like this makes me glad that I was achild of the 80's.
And Hoyt wrote Never Been to Spain, and also Joy to the World (not the carol; the song that starts out "Jeremiah was a bullfrog!") Both of these were covered nicely by 3 Dog Night. Another you may have heard would be No No Song (recorded by Ringo Starr).
You know, Gremlins is an all time almost super cult classic; we've know this, however; I must admit in this age of YT reactions, I am delightfully astounded at how epic the reactions to it are almost uniformely 😂😂😂it's soooo goood!!! Lol
Gremlins 2 is one of my favorite movie ever and it became even better when I heard the story about Joe Dante not wanting to make it so he put the condition he could do whatever he wanted in it. He just kinda went "fuck it" and it's that much better for it. We'll never have another movie like it. I really hope she watches it, I want to see that reaction :)
07:20: "Don't ever feed him after midnight." "He will gain weight, just blow up." Well. . . you're not wrong. . . The inventions are part of the theme. Director Joe Dante (Steven Spielberg produced, he didn't direct) was fascinated with the concept of entropy, and considered the Gremlins vessels of entropy. Everything breaks down eventually, Rand Peltzer's inventions just break almost as soon as he finishes them.
Two basic points. Firstly, the Gremlins that is mentioned by the guy, actually was an urban myth that originated in the world war due to machines, especially airplanes crashing. This is likely due to the fact that the mass produced machines of that era was poorly built and those used to things lasting found it unusual and created a myth surrounding it. Secondly, Gremlins have a double meaning in this movie. There is obviously the actual creatures we see causing chaos. But the more ethereal mythical gremlins are also referenced. Almost as a foreshadowing. We can see this in the fact that all the inventions apparently work fine at first and the just stop working properly. And how certain equipment stops working. In fact it's fascinating to see just how much stuff in the background shows signs of mechanical failure. Most of these things predate the creatures. So one might think there's already 'gremlins' in the town before the actual gremlins arrive. When watching the second movie, one sees the same phenomenon of random breakdowns of equipment before the arrival of the creatures.
I've been a fan of your channel for a long time now. I've been with you since you were at around 4k subscribers. I just really love your energy and your personality, you really brighten my day. Keep up the good work!
The man with the tractor never said he hates foreigners. He made it clear he doesn't like imported products. He prefers products made in the USA. There is a difference.
Yes, I agree. But there are cheap pandering points to be scored with certain demographics, by deliberately misrepresenting what the character actually said. It is a very lawyerly misrepresentation of his words.
Jerry Goldsmith called "this song" "The Gremlin Rag". You can find some performances of classical orchestras of Gremlin music here on youtube, and they have one thing in common: The musician have visibly a LOT of fun performing it!😀
Had a great time seeing this movie when I was 10 years old in theaters back in 1984. AWESOME score composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith. Love that 'Gremlin Rag'. He made a cameo in the film(@14:23 and @14:35, in the telephone booth behind Mr. Randall Peltzer when he's talking on the phone), as well as in the sequel("Gremlins 2: The New Batch"), which he also scored.
Jerry Goldsmith. Remember that name. He was one if the greatest movie music composers that ever lived. All his scores are great. And the ones here for Gremlins and the sequel are just fantastic, because he was given free reign.
11:30 A gremlin is a mischievous folkloric creature invented at the beginning of the 20th century to originally explain malfunctions in aircraft, and later in other machinery, processes, and their operators.
out of all the reactions to gremlins that i have watched in just the last few days this one is the best reaction Vk just made it so much more fun to watch and i was crying from laughing thanks vk yes there is a gremlins 2 and it is just as good
Funny thing, I never actually watched this movie. Instead I read one of those picture novels with stills from the movie. I remember reading one for Back To The Future as well. Fun times.
21:06 Mike had a rough life. Marine Corps sniper in Vietnam. Kingston Falls Pennsylvania Gremlin outbreak. Lost his son due to police corruption in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Tried his hand at the FBI in catching Dexter. Moved to New Mexico to escape all of that. Got tangled up in Gus Fring's operation while trying to give his granddaughter a better life. In all seriousness, Jonathan Banks has been playing the same guy with police background trying to survive for over forty years. I'm not mad, he's really good at it.
I knew they used the word "Gremlins" back in WWI & WWII as a joke to cast blame for broken or malfunctioning machinery. I found it goes back much further. This is what I found: Gremlins are a mythological creature that originated from the fairy fields and woods of England. They are mischievous creatures that can be destructive and love to make things malfunction or place things in disarray. The word Gremlin comes from Old English and the word gremian, which means "to vex." The origin of the modern term 'gremlin' is disputed, but it is often said to derive from the Old English word 'greme,' which means to vex or annoy.
That IS Mike from Breaking Bad! Also the guy who compliments Billy's drawing of Mrs Deagle as a dragon is actually famous animator Chuck Jones who was one of the co-creators of Bugs Bunny and also directed the 1966 Grinch animated film.
So the reference to "Gremlins" messing with stuff is a superstition or old saying and not based in fact on actual creatures. Whenever something messed up or broke down, it was said "little gremlins got into it and messed it up"
When you think about it there is a MAJOR flaw in the don't feed them after midnight rule. Every time after 12:00:00 is technically after midnight. Therefore, there is literally no time in which they could be fed.
Gremlins are mythical creatures that people in the early 20th century blamed mechanical failures on. The idea was especially popular during the war for blaming plane failures on. It's unclear if the creatures in the movie are what the myth is based on, or if they just happen to be destructive creatures that Mr. Futterman calls gremlins. 14:22 - Robby the robot, from the movie Forbidden Planet (1956). Robby has had a long career making guest appearances in TV shows and even commercials. He's probably the most famous movie robot ever. The device in the background with the spinning disc on the back, is the titular device from The Time Machine (1960).
I was recognising parts of the town, like the cinema, from Back to the Future, so found this on the internet: The set was built for the 1948 film An Act of Murder and was featured as downtown Hill Valley in the Back to the Future trilogy, as well as Kingston Falls in the Gremlins series.
Never seen anything more chaotic? Wait until you see part 2.
Understatement of the century 😂😂
my sentiments exactly.
Please watch 2!!!!!
Just joining in the chorus of people saying you gotta check out Gremlins 2!
100% agree. And all chaotic possibilities are to come. Part 2 please

"Gremlins 2:The New Batch"is amazing, funny and doesn't take itself too seriously. Definitely worth watching!
The mechanics in WW2 would say that gremlins were the reason why their machinery broke down. It's like a "bug" for computers nowadays. It was a joke, but they'd say "yeah, that plane has a gremlin in it".
Let's face it, the mom got creative with those kills, it's actually impressive. Not gremlin creative, but still rather creative and messy.

17:50 - You have no idea.
20:56 - The song if "The Gremlin Rag," by Jerry Goldsmith.
21:08 - Because it's the same actor. 😉
27:11 - It was NEVER a weird time to kiss Phoebe Cates. NEVER!
The Gremlins town is Kingston Falls, not Bedford Falls.
@@nthdgree5078 D'oh! You're right! I mucked up, there.
"Where did they get cigarettes?"
For you younguns, a brief history lesson. Back in the 80s, and before, you'd find vending machines with cigarettes in them. A bar would be almost guaranteed to have one. Convenience was a much higher priority than making sure that a kid didn't have access to them.
I don't know how things are in the USA right now but in LATAM you can still find cigarettes in any store.
And when I was in germany I was surprised they sold cigarettes in the grocery store at the cashier. o0 So a gremlin could just get them from there when he is plundering food from there anyway.
Seeing as she was never told anything apart from that she should leave the house, I think she might have some repressed anger to deal with!
@@somerotter She knew she would have to defend herself and her home. So the anger displayed there was useful.
The same actress also played the mom in "Back to the Future."
Speaking of chaotic 80s movies, you should see Big Trouble in Little China. I don't even remember the plot, just the chaos.
I *think* Billy was supposed to have a little brother, that's why Corey Feldman & the childish things were here,
& the brother got removed to make it more about Billy & Gizmo
(something like that?)
The way the sequel explicitly calls this out is hilarious.
Still the most twisted Christmas memory in a movie.
I never know how to react to that story... 40 years ago I thought it was so ridiculously over the top that I thought it was a hilarious dark joke... but then I realized that some people found it really disturbing, so now I'm always wanting to laugh about it but feeling that it's wrong to laugh about it...
The mom VS the Gremlins was one of my favorite scenes from my childhood. She didn't pull any punches there.
Gizmo is a real one. Love that little dude. Respect to the mom, she went to 100 out the gate
A fantastic dark comedy that would never be made today. The sequel is almost as great. And yep, that was Jonathan Banks. He was also in "Beverly Hills Cop".
So was Reinhold....the bank manager.
-----
@jwoodard29
-----
- Funny that you said that, 'cause I've heard whispers about a third 'Gremlins' movie being planned...
-----
Interesting that in "Gremlins" Reinhold was an antagonist and Banks a hapless policeman, while in "Beverly Hills Cop," it was the exact opposite.@@0PsychosisMedia0
and he can be seen in Airplane in the control tower if I'm not mistaken...
Never be made today? Um, they're planning a sequel.
He's not a racist old man he's a World War II veteran with PTSD. Gremlins are something that cause problems in your car or electronics & you can't find the reason
Yep. While it's more common today for people to use "bugs", I've heard planty of people talk about having to get some gremlins out of something.
@@dr.burtgummerfan439 yes I'm always surprised when no people never heard of a gremlin before Beyond this movie
@@livebackwardsAgree...
I work in the Auto industry & the same way you just used the word *BUGS* is the same way the word *Gremlins* is used. When you can't track down the cause of a problem sometimes affecting multiple things
He is also racist.
Dick miller was a great actor and lived until very recently 2019 when he was 90 years old 🙏
"gremlin" is an old slang term from I think WWI or WWII that servicemen used to describe any weird or crazy thing that would go wrong with their equipment.

The evil Ruby Deagle was played by Polly Holliday. She was pretty famous in the 70's from starring in the sitcom Alice. Her catchphrase was "Kiss my grits!!!"
THAT WAS THE WOMAN FROM ALICE?????? No wonder her voice struck me as familiar! *mind blown*
Mrs. Deagle is like a cross between Ebenezer Scrooge and Almira Gulch, emphasis on the Almira Gulch. She'd have been a great villain for the second movie.

Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Zach Galligan.
I don’t know why but that’s hilarious
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, too. That and Gremlins were the two big ones that led to it.
I'm so glad you recognized Mike from Breaking Bad! Proud of you!
Jonathan Banks!
Jonathan Banks have a pretty extensive career. From top of my mind I can remember a small participation in Airplane!, and also as a henchman of the villain in Beverly Hills Cop.
And yeah, the 80s were unhinged.
She's thinking of his character Mike in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
Beverly Hills Cop also has Judge Reinhold.
@@DaviniaHill And in a role much more significant as well.
gremlins 2 is even more bonkers. it's one of those movies that's so insane it's kinda amazing
The sequel is even more fun (and not holiday themed, so don't wait too long)
Also if you know cantonese , spoilers Mogwai translates to Monster 🙂
Red letter media boys have some of the original gremlins puppets, that were used during filming, plain puppets with not much animatronics.
Once I learned that Howie Mandel voiced Gizmo, I could never look at Giz the same.
@@SurvivorBri He did a great job with Giz's cute words and noises.
@@LordVolkov definitely but I picture Howie in my head whenever I see Gizmo now. Howie used that voice in his comedic sketches.
“Omg they are the energizer bunny on crack” no honey this is them normally Gremlins 2 is them on crack.
The movie progressively goes from warm fuzzy cute and cuddly to wickedly horrific and that makes it so inthralling to watch
@@Rocket1377 cool story
The writer based the Gremlins off the descriptions of WW2 pilots and what they saw during the war. The chinese word Mogwai means Demon. The writer really did his research for the script. And some people believe they may exist in the spirit world and come into our world from time to time. 😉
i've watched this movie almost every crhistmas i can remember. when i was a kid, i named my first kitten Gizmo from this movie. the sequel leans more into the comedy vs horror.... but still worth a watch
Fun Fact @14:21 you can see the HG Wells Time machine in the back ground and then its gone when we get back to him talking on the phone.
And Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are there too
And Robby The Robot 🤖
Those three gremlins threw hands with a stay-at-home mom in a kitchen. They never stood a chance.

“I have never seen anything more chaotic” LOL YOU THINK SO, just wait until Gremlins 2:The New Batch
I was 7 or 8 when I first saw this, immediately loved it and would rewatch it constantly.
Phoebe Kate's character has the darkest, best unexplored past.
1. Don't expose them to bright light.
2. Don't let them get wet.
3. Don't feed them after midnight.
The father is a great country singer Hoyt Axton. His mother actually wrote the song heartbreak hotel.
21:06 The deputy looks like Mike from BREAKING BAD, because he is Mike from BREAKING BAD! Jonathan Banks plays both roles. He just got old!
You know, Gremlins is an all time almost super cult classic; we've know this, however; I must admit in this age of YT reactions, I am delightfully astounded at how epic the reactions to it are almost uniformely 😂😂😂it's soooo goood!!! Lol
I really recommend another Joe Dante directed film “Small Soldiers”. It’s like Gremlins meets Toy Story.
07:20: "Don't ever feed him after midnight." "He will gain weight, just blow up."
Well. . . you're not wrong. .
This movie scarred me as a child. In the 80’s, parents assumed any movie with puppets was worthy of showing their kids.
Gremlins 2 turns up the insanity to 11. Love the first but the 2nd is easily my favorite.
I saw this movie so young I don't even remember, but it is an all time favorite.
Now please watch the second one, it's great

Funny thing, I never actually watched this movie. Instead I read one of those picture novels with stills from the movie. I remember reading one for Back To The Future as well. Fun times.

Mike had a rough life.
This is what I found:
Gremlins are a mythological creature that originated from the fairy fields and woods of England.
"Enegizer bunny on crack, with no moral compass" 😂😂😂
That IS Mike from Breaking Bad!
Also the guy who compliments Billy's drawing of Mrs Deagle as a dragon is actually famous animator Chuck Jones who was one of the co-creators of Bugs Bunny and also directed the 1966 Grinch animated film.
So the reference to "Gremlins" messing with stuff is a superstition or old saying and not based in fact on actual creatures. Whenever something messed up or broke down, it was said "little gremlins got into it and messed it up"
