I just came across these "The Weekly Show" videos, and am so thrilled to see the glorious Ruta Lee. I had just been watching her marvelous comic performance in "Coming of Age" where she romanced Van Johnson. As soon as I heard she had a book out, I went to amazon and ordered it. Can't hardly wait to read it!! Thank you for this great interview. Thank you and Blessings from Encinitas, California❣
Thank you Ruta for your contribution as an actress in one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes "A Short Drink From a Certain Fountain". I've also seen you in the "Autopsy" episodes giving your heartfelt sentiments and first hand experience of your friends and colleagues. Believe me, I was right there with you; remembering those we have loved, and lost. Take care of yourself dear lady. Blessings and love to you and yours!!! Thank you for giving us a birds eye view of your life!!! ❤❤❤❤
FYI ... Lucille Ball modeled coats in New York City in the early 1930s. Like Ms. Lee said, Ms. Ball was a larger woman, a size ten if I remember correctly, the perfect size to model coats,
Don`t know why this does not appear. So I`ll post it again. Ruta did not get a long-term MGM contract after appearing in `Seven Brides` Although she was very very good. My thinking is that Debbie Reynolds, the big cheese musical comedy star on the lot, connived to keep that crown for herself. In her pocket was Lillian Burns Sidney, Casting Director and Coach. And although Lucy Ryman was head of Talent Acquisition it was Lillian who made the final decision on whethe ror not to take on a new contract player. As a kind of compensation or maybe cover Debbie promoted Ruta to the board of the Thalians. Whether the Thalians was Debbie`s project or not when she became involved she became very involved. The dinners etc. to which Ruta refers were Reynolds very canny way of getting and keeping control. Debbie was a very very political person. She managed to convince everyone incluidng Ruta who parrots the status quo in this interview about Eddie Fisher and Harry Karl. Fisher was a front and he knew it. He was fronting for Reynolds`s long term relationship with a gay woman. Karl was simply used, bled. Reynolds went through all his money and left him bankrupt. Ruta herself is a refugee from the Nazis. She is either Romanian or Ukrainian. Nonetheless she was not that well treated. As I say MGM did not give her a long term contract and friendships with Jews includng Jack Bennynever materialized with anything decent. Benny gave Marilyn Monroe a Cadillac when she did his show. Don`t think he was as generous or as caring with Ruta. Reynolds treatment of Carrie Fisher over many years landed Fisher in a mental home, subjected her to electro-shock. Her competition for granddaughter Billie Lourd virtually finsihed off Carrie Fisher. There`s alot here which needs exposition but which won`t get it. My antipathy for Reynolds and `Singing in the Rain` was noted in `Down With Myth America` (NYTimes, 24 May 1970) But was after getting to know her via Lillian Burns Sidney that the intense dislike really kicked in. Reynolds was a menace and a sociopath. Sad the many who were affected by that sociopathology.
@@daviddixon1011 Because I was a bosom-buddy of Lillian Burns Sidney who coached Carrie and Debbie through `Irene`. Because I interviewed Debbie and I interviewed Carrie. Because I interviewed lots of the MGM players etc. about Lillian and Debbie etc. Read Michael Winner on the Eddie-Debbie marriage. Read Carrie`s own account in `Postcards`. Debbie, to deflect attention from herself as the `mother` character, begged director Mike Nichols to allow her to play the role. NO DICE! Shirley MacLaine plays it.
Ruta Lee is a national treasure.❤
Lucille Ball is responsible for Star Trek being on the air and one extra season of the original show.
