I loved the Xbox 360 S. Fun fact the design of the S was actually what one of the prototype 360s looked like back during the 2005 E3 showcase when they revealed the original system.
There’s a shot of them going over the prototypes they were working on and one of them looked near identical to the slim

It’s not small at all, but the angular cut and fan on the side instead of the back. Which is what Microsoft went with when they made the slim

I got an Xbox 360 S yesterday for the reason that the Xbox Series X doesn’t play ALL Xbox, Xbox 360 games like the Wii U would play ALL Wii games.

I got a 60GB E for $35 with a controller, headset, PSU, audio out to A/V cable, A/V to SCART adapter and 8 games, and I upgraded it to 500GB, because I found a first party 500GB drive for $10. I also bought a wireless 360 controller with a brand new battery and a chatpad.
You’re not gonna wanna hear this but the 4gb e consoles sometimes have an Emmc chip which contains the system software. These chips are prone to dying.

I bought a pre owned an Xbox 360 s today. So nice to load up a game and be able to play straight away without having to download or install anything. Hooked it up to my 24 inch monitor and the games ran very well. Tested gears of war 1,2,3, Alan Wake and Dead Rising 2.

Just got a 360 E model last week and I love it. It's the only 360 I've never owned and it has definitely grown on me.
as a kid its shameful to admit actually it isnt or else i wouldnt be admitting it so basically i was the one kid who gets jealous yknow so when my friend got an xbox 360 like me i had the E and he had the arcade so i called it fake without knowing what it actually is lol now i know btw later our friend got a ps4 and the hate went to him nowadays we have matured and are still friends happy end moral is kids are ass*oles

There are a few issues in this comparison. All of the models had multiple motherboard revisions that have their own quirks, could have been addressed. For example phat 360s had the most and least unreliable motherboards, the later ones being (supposedly) even more reliable than slims. Then there are different possible causes for the red ring of death. A common misconception is that it means overheating, but it actually is the chip being defective, the solder breaking from motherboard flexing or something else. Even the red dot on the slims have different possible causes, you said you fixed it with the oven method but mine did it because it didnt like a device being charged off of it. I wouldnt call this an ultimate comparison. Otherwise a well edited video.
He also mentions that the largest memory card was 256MB but it was actually 512MB. 3:51

I have 3 E models. One is the Blue edition one with a 500 GB drive. Other 2 are stock black.
They are super quiet, boot up fast and have very little usage from former owners.
I have had launch one. S style and I love the E for size and performance.

How much you’re selling the blue for ?
OG Xenon and Zephyr (16.5a) = Avoid
OG Falcon (14.2a) = OK but still somewhat prone to rrod
OG Jasper (12.1a) = Very reliable OG model. These were pretty coveted back then. Best to also pair it with a Xenon power brick as the xenon ones were the best fat model power supplies.
Slim and E: All good choices as far as reliability is concerned
I still have my jasper. Disc drive gets stuck so I have to leave a disc inside the drive to prevent jamming.
Your 360s disc tray sticks because the tray belt is slipping, you should replace the belt to fix sticking tray.
honestly the only reason why to buy an OG xbox 360 is because RGH 3 is so much easier on them but a bit more glitchy

The original Xbox 360 model if you get one from late 2008 (preferably for me any time from 2009 - 2010) are the models that are the most reliable original Xbox 360 models you can buy, l would say just as reliable as the slim and E models. I switched from a slim to an Elite Jasper from 2009 recently (not because they failed, they still work) and it works like a charm, l gutted a 500gb slim hard drive to the old connector and it works as you’d expect. Having memory card support despite the sizes being small is really nice for save data and storing Xbox LIVE profiles on and despite the shit-ton of adapters l had to buy to use everything l wanted, for this model of the Xbox 360 in my opinion it is completely worth it. It’s a gorgeous console and if you get one from 2009, you can comfortably use it with no fear of it failing on you.
How you put slim harddrive in fat xbox?

Generally, phat consoles made during and after March 2008 are perfectly reliable, if not more reliable than Slims and E consoles. At that time, Microsoft addressed GPU issues on Falcon boards that caused the majority of RRODs on Xenons and Zephyrs. The future Jasper/Tonasket boards also have very reliable GPUs. The same applies to consoles that were officially serviced by Microsoft's repair center.
If using a phat console, you don't necessarily need to use an AV cable for RCA or optical audio. There are also cheap adapters that convert the AV port to output optical and RCA audio without video cables, and they're slimmer than normal AV cables so you can still use HDMI.
I understand that this video is targeted towards general audiances, but I would at least mention manufacture dates of when they were fixed. I would also mention failures of 4 GB memory units on Slims and Es, a similar issue to 32 GB Wii Us.
The Slim runs fairly hot, so I like the extra USB ports because I can plug in a small desk fan and have it running blowing across the fan vent of the system, which helps immensely in keeping it cool. It's never RROD'd from overheating, but my first Slim actually melted some and started smoking when its cooling unit went out, and that system never RROD'd either, and while my Slim I have now has a working cooling unit, I still just try to help the system run cooler.
Doing that is a waste of time. It's an exhaust fan, of course it's gonna feel hot. The SMC dynamically adjusts the fan to run in safe temperatures. Most RRODs or RDODs are from hardware failures, not overheating (if it really was an overheating issue then you replace thermal paste or on Corona, the resistors for temp sensors)
If your fan dies, replace the internal fan. I would look into the many resources published by Josh Davidson about the console's cooling system.

I booted up my original xbox from 2003 and realized not only can you burn CDs to have music on it just like the 360.. but i totally forgot the original xbox had its own section on the main menu JUST for your music you put on your xbox. Listening to my old tunes was incredible
I had an old 360 Elite as my first foray into the HD era of gaming till it red ringed and so now currently I have a 360 Slim. Thing still runs like a champ.
The jasper models from 2008-2010 are my favorite
Late Falcon models from 2008 are okay for the most part but the Jasper models have the best reliability of all OG models. For those who worry deeply about the RROD, I'd definitely say avoid the Xenon, Zephyrs, and early falcon models from 2007 at all costs since those are the most susceptible to the RROD.
I personally have the 360 slim. I always thought it was a 360 Elite. Still works too. It also has i believe 500GB. Not sure.
My Xbox Arcade is still working fine. I got the red ring a few times over 10 years ago but I would just take out the hard drive, unplug it from power, wait a bit and then turn it back on. I just always unplug the power after I use it now and I have never had an issue since. It is incredibly loud though.
I definitely recommend opening up the console, repasting all of its thermal paste, and doing a nice old dust removal. I betcha it'll (quite literally) chill out and quiet down, also furthering its life span!

I don't want to be "that guy", but at the 3:30 mark I just wanted to put a correction. If you use the component cable on the original Xbox, you are getting HD through that. HD is a moniker for 720, which you get 720p through that cable. You can even get up to 1080i so FHD, but not 1080p. 1080p didn't come till the later Xbox had HDMI.

1080p came on the very first models when using the VGA cable which is how I connected mine. I had a launch edition.
All three versions had disc drawer problems. Sticking shut/not closing. Probably to do with the rubber band stretching. Fiddly to replace without removing cover (I've seen it done though)and you need special tool for removing cover by the looks of it. Great console otherwise and great controller (S).

I still have my glossy black Xbox 360 S, still working like a champ (hardly makes a sound when on too) I have it under the tv next to my Series X. And sat next to those i have my OG black Xbox, awesome trilogy of systems (The Series is basically an upgrade of the One, much like what iPhone does with their iPhones')

The phat models can be reliable if you keep an eye out. Xenons (05-06) if been serviced by Microsoft with newer GPUs actually can be tanks. I’ve rescued many of these systems that are reliable and nobody knows about it. Jaspers from 2008-2010 rarely ever RROD either.

Had 2 originals that red ringed and then Microsoft sent me an s, still have it. Just opened it up and cleaned it a few days ago.

A negative for the S is the touch button sensor after a while starts to finicky and beep randomly
Another thing you could have mentioned is that the analog port also supported VGA out and it was the only way to get 1080p out on the original model 360. It even supported a whole lot of VGA resolutions so you could connect to any number of computer monitors whether they be a VGA CRT or a LCD monitor. Component was able to do 720p or 1080i and those would have worked well on the displays of the era as well. I do not think the 360 E supports VGA due to it switching how it does analog video out.
360 on a CRT is also pretty good when it's a VGA or HD CRT. Even the SD CRT had some advantages as some games altered their resolution based on the output resolution of the console so running at 480i or 480p would yield better performance in those games that did that.
I have a few 360s. I'd recommend on any older console to do general upkeep including replacing the thermal paste. All Xbox's have been pretty easy to open up and work on.
Taking the case off on a 2006 model 360 is fiddly, id hate to know what a hard to replace case is if thats considered easy.
@@SecretOfMonkeyIsland784 In my opinion the S is a bit more difficult to open if you don't have the right tools, the E being a bit easier and the original being the "easiest" (but still harder to open than something like a Gamecube or Super Nintendo).
I still have 2x of the old design Xbox 360's, one of them (2006 model) i fixed it back in the day for RROD and for a faulty DVD drive, despite fixes though of hotbox fix and an improved aftermarket cooler the 360 still RROD's. The second 360 is a year or two newer but works when last tested.

I actually was using a friend's 360 at the time and couldn't get my OG Xbox game to work. When I took a look at it when connecting it to a PC, I noticed that Partition 2 was completely missing which was responsible for handling the backwards compatibility. I assumed it was a 3rd party HDD, as my friend bought the 360 used and never played any OG Xbox titles for all I know to notice the issue.
Thankfully, one of their friend's had a donor 360 HDD that I was able to clone while backing up my friend's save data, so backwards compatible games worked as it should.
Fun fact: I actually made a video back in 2018 that went over transferring OG Xbox saves to 360, as nobody at the time made a guide on how to do it.

I’ve got 3original 360 models. One is an elite Jasper that I clean and re-paste regularly. It also looks like I just pulled it out of its original box. The other 2 are white falcon models, one is red ringed and the other one is in good shape.
I had the white one that i got in 2008 for Christmas i was 13 at the time boi you don't how much this system means to me it got me through middle school all the way to the end of my highschool year so many memories with the little games I had
I got 2 xbox 360 slims
1 i've had since 2010 which is the stock 4gb black one with a kinect and the other one I got used in 2018 which is a Star Wars edition that makes the cool R2D2 sounds. It's been my childhood and something I often times find myself enjoying and looking back at being playing my childhood games, and the simplicity
on chrismas my parents got me and my brother the 360E the year it came out, but my brother mostly played the ps3. we still have both original consoles and still work great, and a while ago when they fixed the old COD servers, i picked up some of the olds games to have a go at them and it is amazing
It's a pretty big miss not to discuss the motherboard revisions on each of these.
Xenon and Zephyr were the worst phats for RROD, and Opus isn't worth having becuase of no HDMI. Falcons are okay, but Jaspers are pretty reliable consoles.
As for slims, the 4GB eMMC modules have a very high failure rate, and in some cases you'll have to replace the NAND chip. People have done 16MB NAND conversions just to get around this. The Trinity 4GB modules can be removed, but the Coronas are soldered to the board. If you have a Corona 4GB, you're better off RGHing it and turning off the eMMC in the XeBuild.
As for the E, it also has a chance of coming with a Corona 4GB board, which has the same problem as the slim. However, there's also the Winchester board, which cannot be RGHed, so that's another downside.
The Jasper and the Trinity are typically the most sought after models because of everything stated above.
I've got a 360 E in my room since 2014 with a nice growing collection of games for it. I've done a lan party a few times with my friends and one of them has the original 360. But we still play coop/splitscreen on most of my games from the mw trilogy to black ops 2 and minecraft.
I'm considering buying a second console for system link now that I'm buying games that support larger system link matches and such.

Thank you! HDMI will definitely be a better option through ARC of your audio device/receiver supports it. My friends and I have older receivers that use digital in, which is the better in that specific case. But HDMI is always better!

I have the Xbox 360 S, and the reason there are 5 ports (3 on back; 2 front) is because so there was room for the full 4 wired controllers and 1 for an external hard drive. I had all consoles; the original had the 4 rings, i have a 360 S right now and it works great, and my dad has a 360 E.
My 360 Slim died last year unfortenetly. Most of my library is backwards compatible tho and I'm glad I can still enjoy these games on my Series X :)
Jasper phat is the way to go ;) Iconic design + the best reliability (I’ve had S and E’s die while my Jasper still runs perfectly) + HDMI port. It’s the last phat revision that was ever made
The original Xbox 360 did have a digital HD output. It had a DVI out. I know because I had the DVI cable hooked up to my rear projection TV.
me personally i dont have a childhood nostalgic memories with the Xbox 360 but it was my first console i got in 2022 Christmas and then early august of 2023 i got the series s and played it a lot but then started playing my 360 a lot because I do have nostalgia from the game disks and all of that its just so fun.
I have issues with the slim taking care of it. It’s a pain to crack open. Look for a 360 JASPER model.
Eh, Slim is easy to take apart. Watch Josh Davidson's guides on tearing apart Slims, all you need is a sharp pointy tool and some fingers. In my opinion it is easier to take apart than the fat, even if you have a fat opening tool.
I had the arcade model of the original. Used it all the way from 2010-2016. It was a great console and served me well over those years. unfortunately, it stopped reading discs about 4 years into having it. The only way to get it to read games was to beat the top of it. Eventually, that method even stopped working.
Solution if you didn't know. This shit happened to me and haven't touched my slim for years until I took a risk. My first try I got it but I was having anxiety and hope through out the entire thing. You have to replace the disc drive with a new one. But soldering and stuff needed. First try doing that technical stuff but I got it. Can't explain how happy I was 😢😂. You would have to swap the PCB chip or key whatever it was called from the old onto the new drive. It's definitely risky but it worked for me. But be extremely careful and handle with care. It's a ugghhh kinda hideous process
I got 2 different versions of the xbox 360, I have the original white xbox 360 and I have the matte black xbox 360 slim or s, I actually use my xbox 360 slim than my original xbox 360 and they both don't have a red ring of death problem, they been working real fine. The xbox 360 was a great console and a classic gaming.
About 2 hours ago my xbox 360 showed the beautiful red ring of death or hardware failure -.- i did not know the xbox 360 e was a thing but after your video i think i will spent a bit more and get the 3 model, as you say if you just wanna play xbox games get the E and i just wanna play my disc games so i will hunt for that one :D thank you for a really really great comparison video i did not know i needed.
I have an arcade Jasper from 09. Still works. Recently replaced the rubber band, cleaned the laser and works like new. Its mostly used for rock band these days lol
I distinctly remember hunting through stacks of Elite consoles at Best Buy looking for a particular serial number that would indicate it was from a certain “build” that was supposed to be more quality. I forget the codename now. Then it Red Ringed on me anyway a few months later but I still have it and am glad to have an officially repaired one.
What does the E actually stand for? S stands for Slim but E? energy efficient?
The Xbox 360 can't send a surround signal through the HDMI port? Or is that for people who don't have their TV running through their sound system?
Great video good comparison of models I originally had a xbox 360 in 2006 moved over too playstation in 2012 got hold off a slim model in 2021 and have an e model as well collected nearly 150 games since then as they are so cheap at the moment great console good selection of games out there I would highly recommend one in 2023 anyway all the best 👍
I bought the OG 360 soon as I could (about 3 months) find it in a store after launch. Did I have to send it in three times? Yes...But, I still use it and, it's my favorite version of all 360's. Well, excluding themed slim 360's. I have the Halo 4 360 slim and really love that one too. Honestly use it more. To prolong my OG 360's life. But the og 360 still looks really great to me!

I remember teasing my friend as a kid pretending i was going to turn off his game, but i wasnt expecting it to actually turn off because he had the slim and i had the E with the physical button and didn't even know motion buttons were a thing lol, luckily my og xbox one has always been out of reach of cats but ive been having issues with it just randomly turning itself on, definitely prefer real buttons

The slim was the one for me I just liked the color/mat black finish and slim design, it didn’t stand out as much while I was playing games but was a welcomed sight when observed also the connect was an ok add on
You don't need an optical cable for surround sound. Most AV receivers use the HDMI port for 5.1 audio.

Very well made comparison :) I still using my old one (iconic design, but already the Jasper Board, so no RRoD) and love it except the noise. Currently looking for a cheap S or E model but let's see if I could make a dream come true and get the Gears of War Edition of the S ;)
The original Xbox and Duke controller from 2001 will always be the best Xbox design, 2nd best design is the Xbox 360 arcade.

Optical audio is great, but I like the headphone jack for music games like Rocksmith because there's less delay with that format.

I got 3 brand new Xbox 360 E models. I was planning getting just 2, but I had to get a third one because some games are region locked.
My fat og 360 is from 09 and still works it was one of the last revisions before the slim was around the corner lol

Just wanted to point a few things you got wrong. The original Xbox 360 systems that came out are dubbed the Zephyr and Xenon. The Xenon was the only Xbox without hmdi. The Xenon was advertised as a cheaper option in 2005.
Yet the zephyr and Xeon are both models that you want to avoid. Fun fact Zephyr consoles were still being manufactured up until 2007, you can see this with a lot of the halo 3 Xbox 360 consoles.
The elite console introduced the falcon motherboard. However it was still untrainable. The falcon did see slight changes in late 2008, making anything with the manufacturer date from August 2008 reliable to use.
The next board revision was the jasper, by far the most reliable board, and is even debatable being more reliable than the Slim's. This was the last phat board revision, they were only made in 2009-2010, making these the must have version when going for an older looking Xbox 360.
Also I'd like to note that rrod is a spectrum of hardware faults. This is why the secondary error code is important when diagnosing these rrod systems. The biggest rrod cause is a GPU failure, this is because chip manufactures didn't put enough silicone in the GPU. Causing it to fail over multiple play sessions. That rrod was the reason why so many of these systems failed, and we're mainly seen on Zephyrs and Xeon as they were shipped with a defective GPU.
Definitely got to add that the Kronos (Jasper v2) with the "big block" nand is the most reliable motherboard, which is an original shelled Xbox 360. It's truly is the one to get for reliability, but does not have wifi built in. I have every variation motherboard and special edition xbox 360 in my collection, and I repair/RGH them to give credibility to my statement. Unfortunately, something I have seen more and more lately is the 4gb coronas with Emmc memory getting corrupt.
Yeah this is a subject the OP neglected. EMMC memory craps out after a while, as seen with Wii U's. There are steps to remedy this issue but it's not recommended for casual collectors.
At the 2:08 Mark, there are really a few that do not. Mainly the jasper v1 and Jasper v2 Systems for the Phat 360
Edit: Late 2008 through 2009. I have a Jasper Elite Model and haven't gotten a single red ring and i've cleaned it out recently and added new thermal paste.
I got a Xbox 360 Elite from 2007 and still works just fine I guess I'm just very lucky and I hope it doesn't get the Red Ring of Death anytime soon

My Xbox 360 Slim was made back in 2011. It still runs just as smooth as it did back then. I still go on it to play a few games now and then. I plan on collecting more Xbox 360 games just to have a collection to play. I know at some point my Xbox 360 will die on me and it feels like that time is near knowing it is almost 13 years old and it's never been taken apart for replacement parts or cleaned.
i found one of the later chubby original-design consoles for very cheap recently. replaced the thermal paste and modded it. hopefully it lasts for a good while
I got the 360 S with the Kinect when it first came out for Christmas and I’ve had probably the most fun I’ve had as a kid with that single Kinect game alone along with the entire Halo series. The only issue I had as the years went on was the console collecting dust and would shut off, then when I cleaned it in its entirety it worked just as new. Then when I got home I looked inside through the door, that shit came with a 500GB hard drive and a crisp clicky controller
Well you CAN play original Xbox games with aftermarket harddrives - you have to manually arrange the partitions though which is quite a hassle, did that back in the day because I was broke af back then 😂
I have the final version of the E. It's amazing even in 2023. I love physical media and the ability to just pop games in and play.

I own 4 xbox 360 consoles - 3 phat and one 320gb star wars edition slim. 1 phat is on 6717 (Falcon 2007 model) the other 2 phats are Jasper 2009 models (1 has Halo 3 casing). They all have 2 things in common - they all cost less than £10 each and all still work fine.
My slim the other day had a red ring ,so i thermal pasted it and now runs like new😊

My dog ended up chewing up the cord of my Kinect for the Xbox 360 S. I spliced the wires to each other and wrapped it in electrical tape. It actually worked for a short while, but eventually it started to give my Xbox the red ring and turn it off. But when I unplugged the Kinect and restarted my Xbox it would be fine. I never understood how the Kinect would do that.
I have an Elite from 2010 that's still going strong, plugged in back at my parents.

I have and would only have the white original, the design is way ahead, 2nd is better than 3rd with it's shiny scratchy plastic. If you mod it, you can turn the fan speed up and most modders (paid for service) clean the cpu and re-apply thermal paste.
There's also an issue with this new Xbox 360 hard drives is that there's a software in the hard drives that if you delete the software and format the hard drive you can't use the hard drive on these Xbox 360s anymore I tried because now I can't use my hard drive on my 360 you need a specific Xbox 360 hard drive that has the firmware on it😢
Ive read that November 08- September 09 are the Jasper boards and these are way kore reliable with not getting an RROD. I guess these can still E74, but thag error is rare and unlikely.
any fat model manufactured (dates on back) after September 09 is usually a Jasper V2/Kronos board, but can still be a jasper V1, only way to know for sure is to open it. But the jasper V2/Kronos board fats fixed the E74 error. Tons of this on r/xbox360.
But I hear those fats are even more reliable than slims or E's. Is this true?

Something not mentioned, and I'm sure this has already been brought up, is that the original phat console was released in 2008 with the Jasper motherboard revision and was far less susceptible to the red ring. IMO, these are the best models to get. They have the reliability of the S with the iconic look of the phat with HDMI and wi-fi built-in.
I bought an RGH xbox 360 at the start of the year and i love it so much. I haven't stopped playing it and the features you have access to with rgh is incredible. I recommend everyone get an RGH xbox 360.
I’ve found an eBay listing for a 2008 Pro edition that comes with Kung Fu Panda and LEGO Indiana Jones. I was looking into getting that since as of this moment, it’s sub $100 and all still in the packaging
One of my best friends replaces the thermal paste on all my different 360’s, among other issues/fixes, so I’m able to have an OG model in one room, S in another, etc 😂
