Dan, don't worry about people telling you that you teach too fast- you're one of the best at simultaneously teaching/explaining both theory and application to "actual" music plus all the little details in between- I learn so much from each of your clips, including the shorts. I'm certain the majority of us appreciate you're teaching style and youtube personna- keep doing what you do brother.
a “secret” for any newbie bass players: if you start studying by transcribing a bass line through a patterns/shapes system (and not through a pentagram or a tab system) you will find out that the entire bass line of a track (especially in funk music) is simply a patterns/shapes sequence, so you don’t need to know the music theory/notes/scales to play a bass (you need to know music theory to know what you are playing of course…)
I got away with just using shapes for longer than I care to admit. I don't have a photographic memory so it was a while before I figured out a way to visualize the actual notes on the fretboard.
Yeah but then you aren't actually learning to play, you're just memorizing this one particular song. I have songs memorized on Piano, but I don't know how to play piano. If break down the theory of a song you'll understand song as you learn what chords are actually being outlined in each bar, how the song was written, the chord progression of the song, and neat little relationships between intervals. For instance, just last night I learned that a 1 - minor 6 relationship is a major 3rd if you play it backwards
@@skylee5029I told “if you are a newbie”…I am not agaist learning theory but I suggest to start from practice and arriving at theory… exactly the contrary path of the usual…
You're really a terrific instructor, Dan : showing different techniques while explaining the why's and wherefores. Where were you when i started in 1974?...lol
Thank you for that! As an elderly bass clarinetist playing in community bands - there is often no b/c part, and if there is one it's a boring "oom-pah" one - I've had to invent a role for the instrument and improvise my own lines. These ideas and examples are a big help!
Hello from Florida! Dan, I watch your videos more than any other bass lesson videos on TH-cam. It's so beneficial to watch your years of knowledge you share, and it excits me like a little kid to go and try it on my bass afterward. I appreciate your time, effort, and willingness to share your knowledge because it helps not only me but many others out of ruts that we occasionally get it. Please continue teaching, and thanks again! 🙏
I’m blown away: this is incredibly generous support that really helps me create lessons! Thanks so much. Please send me a direct message (dan@onlinebasscourses.com) and we can discuss me making a video lesson with something you want. Thanks again! 🙏🙏
Thanks for affirming the use of the pinkie. I've often felt less than because I default to the pinky for most 2 fret stretches due to my very average sized hands.
Thanks for demonstrating the different bass playable pattern shapes that we can use in our playing. Your explanation is straight to the point and easy to understand plus the practical advices that goes with the demo. We will definitely learn some good bass techniques just by watching your channel.
Wow! Such a great video, thank you so much! This unlocked something in my brain. I'm still learning bass and I'm right in this phase where I need to piece these shapes together in my basslines. And I really love the inclusion of soulness and funkyness!! Thank you so much!
Hi Dan, just to say thank you. I've been around in other bass channels but I found yours really interesting and easy to folow. plus, the downloads are just great
Excellent easy to play and useful patterns ! That high octave makes a good quick contrasting sound. Very nice. I am using visual diagonal patterns to find notes. For example, the octave of any note is down three strings diagonally. From the G string, the octave is up diagonally 4 strings. Makes finding them easy.
A thought I had during the part of this video where you're showing how to use octaves is that it's pretty easy to find a dominant 7th from an octave. It's just two frets lower. Getting comfortable with that idea makes it easy to understand your scale backwards, by starting at the octave.
Thanks a lot Dan , with this video you opened me a whole new world!! Being a beginner bassist sometimes I'm struggling to find "good" notes, well this video just did the trick! Cheers😅
Great lesson Dan, thanks very much. I remember stumbling across your channel when I first got my bass and wondering if id ever understand the theory element but in time its proven to be a really useful way for me to learn, as others have said, keep doing you. 👍🏽
I have the same bass…there are persons saying that it’s a boring bass because it has always the same sound…it’s true that it has a sound only but it’s so unique and so versatile that you can play basically almost any kind of styles!
Great lesson on shapes Dan. I like the way you do these video with very useful content. Glad you were able to slip in a bit of Bernard Edwards. Have you done any videos on Paul McCartney?
Thanks for the clear, simple explanation of what is a 4th or a 5th. I am still rather ignorant of theory after 15 years of playing. But that turned on the light bulb somehow and I'ma at least learn the the rest of this vid.
Great instructional video. You are not going too fast at all Dude, as you said, press pause as you cannot just sit there for 10 minutes for people to play it out; Plus you also have play speed control on TH-cam. Again a Great instructional video. Well spoken and not filled with music jargon that can frighten off learners and long playing guitarists like myself who has recently acquired a lovely 70s Jazz and now I'm now playing bass more than guitar in my studio, and actually I write more on bass as it gives me a greater perspective of the song from the bottom up. Thank You 👍
People are always happy with my bass playing as long as i hit the 1 and feature the key so the singer is comfortable. Yeah - the 6th - get some side eye sometimes, or a raised eyebrow and nod - that lets me know guitarist and/or vox have some jazz or such in their bag
Great video 👍. For me a real trip down memory lane - learning things like the riff from the theme music of The New Avengers (Purdy was such a crush! 😍).
Dude, I never really understood how much you actually know what youre talking about!! You're like a real-live working, gigging/recording bass player, WHO'DA THUNK?!! Heh heh, no offense, in fact, I'm totally impressed - you actually -ROCK-, Dan. Carry on Maestro, I sit at your feet, waiting and willing to learn... P.S. Thanks for this lesson, very powerful.
That's beautiful, I like the line of "Crazy little thing called love" by QUEEN, played on D scale A string. I like that sweet move of tones up to be repeated again on G scale on D string. You give lesson easy way to be understood, I do learn from you like these beautiful lines. I play lines to Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Temptation, James Brown and now I will add some lines from QEEN. Work out your budget and then I’d recommend going to a shop so that you can see and feel the bass. Bottom line is there are amazing cheap choices these days! Don’t overthink it but do make sure the bass is set up well. Anything will be fine if that’s the case.

it’s very simple: I choose a bass, and I have the scale that that bass has…you can be sure that I will NOT choose a bass model depending on the scale lenght (for example, I have a 5 strings Stingray with normal 34 scale and it’s amazing)
@@luigi.zanini As I've wrote up, if you're playing downtuned, scale length is very important. Fanned fret and 35" basses are popular in metal for a reason. I wanted to play Cradle of Filth on my Sire V7V 5 string and it sounded like garbage, A string wasn't defined.
