This is one of the most fundamental lessons on bass! How to link your scales/patterns/modes to a backing track with chord progression and fitting into the pocket. Brilliant!
Dan, your lessons about rock and patterns (and how to use and slip from one to the other) are awesome and so "unlocking". Thanks! You give so much musicality to parts that often sounds "flat". This is skill!
well THAT was fun! love to see head-2-head between the ‘74 H2 and the ‘74 Z1 - to validate your assertion. I might take the Z1 side of that wager 😎 thx Harry - yeah, enjoyed that. seanM
I have a tendency to use part of the bass line while playing a fill, while playing a rhythm part. It comes natural. I heard Hendrix do it in just about every rhythm part. I don't even think about it anymore. Knowing bass lines is essential to what ever part you're playing. Nice work.
Ive been playing for 34 years, some of it professionally, and i still find at least a couple golden nuggets in every one of your videos that fills in some void in my music theory memory. Thank you Dan!
good one, dan! your point at the end is something that resonates. you mentioned that we need to not only know the shapes in 1 position but all over the fretboard. i'm struggling with how to practice this and get this really under my fingers such that these could be fluid transitions. i'm too often stuck in 1 position.
So far, ive picked up the major and minor triads . And using them on several locations on the neck. And learned about what pattern to use on 7 cords. I will definatly check the rest of you TH-cam. Thanks again... 😊
Dan, should I know by heart all the notes of triads and arpeggios (and scales as well), or can I focus on the shapes and intervals to take advantage of the symmetry of the bass guitar? Some bass players say, “Don’t think about notes, but about intervals.” What do you think about it?
Thanks for having such great lessons. I've been practicing your drilles and various video grooves for a few months. I've purchased your RnB & Soul & Mowtown book. Any other suggestions on course material with someone with a few years of high-school jazz band type of experience, who'se been getting back in? I really like your lessons and explanation, but looking for more of a cultivated curriculum, I'm thinking of your "Music Theory for Bass Players', but wondering if there might be something else should try instead.....
Thanks very much. I would recommend the theory course for someone of your level. The Funk one is good if you’re into that style or want to explore it. It’s quite rhythmic and good for groove/timing.
Thanks so much for your vids! Having these available helps so much for me jumping back in when a busy work schedule gets in the way. I found in a video from another channel that I can practice the major triads going up (or down rather, but still up?) the circle of fourths within each of the three neck positions using. One of these has pinky on the root, third finger on third, and hitting the fifth two strings up from the root using the index finger. I've added that to your chord progression examples and blend in different notes before the root liek you've shown. I find this helps understand why I'm practicing these positions rather than just straight arpeggios, though a well placed one still works!

Thanks! 🙏👍
I've got so much from your video's that I never took lessons from anyone else...and now I just bought my first 5 string bass.👍👍👍
Congratulations! Have fun with it. 🙏
THIS LESSON WAS SO GOOD!
No fuss, no BS, straight to the point.
🙏🙏
That riff at 12:40 was awesome! Thanks for this Dan!!
That’s very kind - thank you!

Thanks for the comment! Really happy to hear that.
Very well explained, excellent information. Thank you for including the PDF and backing track.
Thanks very much.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge of some basic things every bass player should know or learn
My pleasure. 🙏
Hi Dan, hello from Belgium. Just to let you know I love all your content. Very usefull for me as a beginner! Thanks a lot.
Really happy to hear that!
Dan, you’re a legend! Thanks so much 🙏

Thanks, Jenn! Hope you’re well.
Jenn, mix up traveling along the strings with across the strings. Take yourself to bits of the neck you find scary and then rescue yourself.
thanks Dan. 👍
One Step beyond- Madness 👍
This is so helpful! Thanks master 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant lesson 👍🏼 (as usual 🙂) All the best from Belgium 👍🏼🇧🇪
Thanks! 😃
thank you so much

You’re welcome. Make some great music with it!

Great question. To me, it’s all the same. I know the notes, the shape, and the sound. Aim for that. It gets easier with practice.
Awesome job, Dan.
Thanks, Matt.
Thanks!
Thanks, David!
This is great. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
great lesson, I didn't know the "complex soul pattern" Dominant 7 arpeggio. I wonder, what do you use to make your pattern illustration?
It’s quite a common one that. I love it. I use Neck Diagrams.
We have some stuff to work for a year here :D Cheers
😂🙏🙏

Dan's music theory course is very good I'm currently doing it now
Happy to hear that, Tommy! 🙏🙏

I'm still jealous of that '80's Ibanez. I didn't even hear anything he said...just looking at that bass

Nice Ibanez 1979 ?
Thanks. 1982 Ibanez Roadster with DiMarzio DP126 pickups
The second chord on the backing track doesn’t quite fit with your D minor triad. In my opinion 👍🙏🇬🇧♥️
Which backing track? There are four. You might be playing the wrong triad over it.
D minor, the saddest of all keys.
😂 indeed. Makes me weep every time.
Thanks!
Appreciate that - thanks! 🙏
