  • This is a detailed step by step instruction for tying in Hackle Tails and getting the feathers to lay exactly the way you intended! The tutorial is broken up into two different styles of tails with respect to the relative silhouette of the imitated baitfish.

Thanks for the quick video Gunnar - need to tie up some hackle wing streamers for bass. Tight lines and we will see you in the fall! Cheers! Hank

You're a good teacher. In New England saltwater fishing we sometimes turn the tail sideways on our deceiver style flies- flatting style. This creates a wing effect so that if the retrieve slows the fly dives down. Speed up the retrieve the fly goes upwards. Viewed from underneath the fly has a bulkier profile. Thanks

Was beating my head against the wall last night trying to tie in a soft hackle tail... never did get it. "Move the feather to the top of the hook..." ****mind blown*** There's still hope for me! Thanks for this man, so incredibly helpful!

great as always... Lefty used to rip off 5/6 feathers, pinch them and tie them on for his deceiver tail. I'll post it if I can find it. I had it on an old tape. He but a bump where he was to attach clump, rip off small clump and twist them and hold twist to attach on top of bump with loose wraps and tightened. Simple search on UTube will show technique

also one good way to make the feather so sit the way you want them to is to flatten the stem of the feather with some pliers.

I couldn't help but think adding some flashabou and an ice ripple fiber head to that second tail would be a great tarpon fly. Easy to cast, sparkly, easy to tie, lands gently . . .

The proper word you should have used was opaqueness. While opacity is a word it does not pertain to the ability of something to block light. It's not that I'm so smart, I just know how to use a search engine. That said, very nice very useful technique. I know you don't make much money from youtube but I sure do enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work buddy and if you're going to be in Michigan this summer please let me know, I know where there's big pike that don't get fished for much.
