      Paul Basspro Thanks for the kind words, is there anything you want to see in addition to the preacher jig?

    If i'm using this for stripers would you recommend i hide the feathers under the bucktail hair or are feathers strong enough not to strip from a bite?

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd put a layer of bucktail over the feathers just for added durability. I will say that the neck hackle used for this has a heavier stem than saddle hackle so it should be ok.

    SJ, After finding your channel this winter, I have learned so much about tying and materials. You are aoung the best out there! Thanks so much!!!!
    In digging through your archives, I find this one with lotsa potential here (Midwest). QUESTION: I assume this is a clear water jig because of color. Could a darker and or florescent version be useful in stained or muddy waters? Or does low visibility just kill all potential for this tie, even in other colors?
    Bob

      Thank you very much!!! Your assumption is right, it is meant for clearer water. The reason being is that hair jigs don't make noise or displace a lot of water. They are almost a completely visual bait but that doesn't mean it can't be used in stained water. A black version or something in a chartreuse and purple may work, you have to give it a go and see if it gets results. I'd be interested in hearing how it works!!!

    Now for a swim jig pattern I love this recipe S.J. in my opinion it's a lot better tie than the Silicone strips I just watched you do on the previous video...On the strength of your work with those hackle feathers in the white grizzly colour I have now ordered through my Australian distributor that product... I can see this hackle minnow working very well in a number of ties over here... Once again thanks for the ideas and sharing your work with the world mate...best regards B.J.

      Thank you B.J.!!!! That particular jig does well when they want a smaller profile. In the warmer months the bass show a preference for silicone and rubber. There is a situation though in which this swim jig works better than the silicone and rubber or even soft plastic. Clear water with only wood and rock cover, there are 2 bodies of water I fish that have very little vegetation. The lakes are fed by cold water springs and the water is very clear. The lakes also experience a lot of angling pressure so the fish are spooky. This jig is very subtle but has the profile and color similar to the Dace and Darter minnows that are there.

      @@smalljaw thanks for your reply mate... Our Aussie bass is very similar to your white perch... We have a tournament scene on Aussie bass as their is no large/small mouth bass stocked in Australian waters...Also the many impoundments where Tournaments are ran over here feature rock and timber environments for the fish to ambush their prey from... I am probably the only jig tier in Australian fishing tournament circles who not only exists but ties jigs from fur and hair instead of silicone/rubber with soft plastics...I have this belief that my new hand tied products can outfish certain brands that are imported into this Country... Of course since I am a minority I am the butt of a lot of non believers negativity but when I finish my tournament boat I will enter these competitions with my hand tied products...That's why I love u-tube I can get new ideas and learn from established jig tying identities such as yourself... THANKYOU once again for your insightful videos...best regards B.J.

      @@brianbochow I completely understand how you can be disregarded in certain circles. I get told that I go overboard with some of my creations but I'm fishing pressured water so I want something different than everyone else. I'm glad my jig tying videos give you ideas for your own creations, that is exactly the purpose of my channel. Those just learning or that really like the patterns can copy the jig exactly. Those who are a little more experienced like yourself, can take the pattern and change the elements to make it their own. Keep on doing your own thing and I know you'll be successful, good luck!!

    Would a much smaller version of this same pattern work for trout?

      I don't see why not but I've never tried it.

    What line do you use when you're fishing your jigs? I'm guessing you use several different poundages. Flourocarbon?

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct in that I use several different line sizes but for the larger jigs 3/8oz and up I like 12# to 15# line, I find braid with a mono leader or straight mono works best, I don't care for the knot strength of fluorocarbon and the fact it sinks as even if fishing deep I want the jig to have a slower fall than another jig of the same size.

    • @danthompson4879
      @danthompson4879 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been using different lines, expanding my horizons. I had the same problems with the knots on flouro.....epic failure. I discovered the solution. Research the Gerald Swindle Knot here on TH-cam. Simple and I've had zero failure, to include 32 bass in 2 hours, all over 2 lbs, 7 over 4 lbs and 1 over 5lbs. Just thought I'd pass the tip on the you. Love your vids SJ! Thank you

    looking to buy some thread what size would you recommend for walleye and large mouth bass

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use Danville Flat Waxed nylon in a 210 denier. Some threads go by an aught size like 3/0 or 6/0 but they vary between manufacturers. For most jigs a 140 denier will work but I like to use 210 for most bass and walleye jigs.

    • @walleye56789
      @walleye56789 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@smalljaw I guess i dont know how they judge the thinkness is the 140 bigger than the 210

    • @smalljaw
      @smalljaw  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      140 is smaller than 210. I use 70 denier for small crappie jigs, 140 for larger crappie jigs and 210 for all my bass jigs.
