So glad you are addressing this. I recently had issues with hair thinning and I was willing to do anything to get my hair volume back. However, it returned on its own. My derm thinks it was due to a stressful period in my life. So glad I did not waste a lot of money on vitamins for my hair that may have led to negative effects.

Thanks Dr Dray for this straightforward, no-nonsense video! I'm the one who asked you on Instagram a few weeks ago about hair and skin supplements containing zinc and biotin - and I saw your answer to that as well - thanks! I've been thinking of buying a hair, skin, and nails supplement, and I feel that the beauty industry has this power of reminding us that we're always "not good enough" and that they always have some miracle solution to it. Thanks for sharing all these important facts and points about the industry and about the ingredients so that we can carefully consider if it's safe for us. I definitely agree that there is a place for supplements - and personally I do take one that manages a condition I have - but otherwise, it's good to think twice if we really need certain supplements. Thanks for this really informative and helpful (and money-saving) video!

You can overdose on vitamins. You should request blood work periodically. One may only need B-complex, and not others 🤷🏼‍♀️.
However, if supplements are a money waste, so can many of the skin care products.
What if a good balance of needed supplements allows you to reduce your face serum stash?

I’ve been taking the Bondi Boost hair growth supplement. It works for me for sure, I’ve had no other change to my diet and my hair over the past year has grown the longest it’s ever been in my life. I’m 45 so I don’t have youth on my side for hair growth. I’ve also noticed considerable less hair loss in my brushes and in the shower. That aside, I’m now cautious about continuing and will definitely share the ingredients of the supplement with my GP. Long rich hair isn’t worth other possible side effects I don’t know about.

Dr.Dray, this was super interesting. I have taken Hair Skin and Nails for YEARS. I found that the Natrol brand helped prevent the skin fissures I got in the winter on my fingers. When I switched to Nature's Bounty (cheaper and more easily available), I found it didn't work until they introduced the "advanced" version. I do think my nails grow faster BUT it doesn't make my hair better. So then I added biotin. It didn't change anything that I know of. But I do have thyroid issues so I am going to stop the biotin and make sure my doctor knows about the HSN. I am also going to mention the other non-doctor-prescribed supplements (like b complex, and zinc) that I take. My neurologist prescribed magnesium and b2 for migraines. Not sure if they help but when you get migraines, you try anything. Thank you for this. I love your channel and the information you share.

Thank you for spreading information. I was diagnosed as iron, vitamin d and vitamin b12 deficient. Yeah I was losing hair, nails cracked and brittle, but the diagnosis came due to other health concerns that was a result of the deficiencies. I take only the supplements at the levels my doctor recommends based on my blood work. These levels EXCEED what typical HSN supplements, and even multivitamins, contain. The levels I'm taking to fix my health issues have the benefit of improving my hair, skin and nails (including reversing some gray hair). Improving your overall health with cooperation of your doctor is crucial to avoid issues.

Hello Dr., thank you for uploading this video. I was taking vitamins regularly but they had a bad effect on me. I had kidney issues afterwards and had to go to the emergency room to clear my bladder. NOT FUN. I told the technician that I was only taking vitamins and no other meds and they looked at me strangely and said that they had never heard of vitamins having negative effects on the body. My husband suggested to instead change my diet and eat foods that naturally help nourish my body such as bone marrow soup, protein, vegetables, pectin etc. Thanks again. 👍👍

Dr Dray, you've read my mind :) I was shopping today and recently, I've been growing my nails, so I almost got tempted to pick up some NOT CHEAP supplement. Even though I'm a scientist, I sometimes get tempted by the flashy marketing 😩 Thanks for the quality content as ever :) You helped me so much with your videos and kind, but objective words! :)

I have to say that certain supplements saved my hair when I was almost going bald. MSM and bamboo extract were amazing as was Phyto hair supplement. They worked! However, I got 2 bottles of HUM hair gummies in my beauty box subscription. I figured “what the heck”, and started taking it. 6 months later my period started going crazy and it would not stop. Went to the doctor and I had fibroids. They were small but they were there. However I also had hyperplasia. But what really got me thinking was that when they checked again two months later, they had doubled up in size, which is not normal and my endometrium was even thicker than the last time. My tests came back showing my estrogen being too high. Now, At this point I was still taking the hair supplement because I thought nothing of it. But I started thinking, why are these things growing so fast? What Have I been doing differently? And I remember the hair gummies. Turns out they have Fo-ti, a Chinese herb used for hair growth, however it greatly increases estrogen production, which can cause fibroids as well as hyperplasia. I have no way to prove the gummies caused my problem, however, after I stopped taking them my fibroids stopped growing out of control, my estrogen levels went back to normal and my endometrium normalized on its own by the time I had surgery. I learned my lesson. I won’t take anything before studying all the ingredients and consulting with my doctor. I had to have a very painful myomectomy and endure 8 months of almost non- stop bleeding. Please research before you put anything in your body.

Glad I clicked on this. I have been taking a hair, nails and skin supplement as well as saw palmetto for about 2 years. Since bariatric surgery 10 years ago and being 76, my once thick hair has become thin and loss of volume. Having Covid 18 months ago also has had a negative impact. I started seeing new hair growth about 3 months after taking the supplements. I stopped taking the supplements in January 2023 due to some digestive problems. My hair started coming out as badly as it did post Covid. I was getting ready to go back on the supplements, but now I’m concerned about the potential interactions.
My hair is not dyed or permed and I have not had acrylic nails for 4 years. The only supplements I routinely take are magnesium and vitamin D per the protocol at Johns Hopkins where i had the bariatric surgery.
I will discuss this with my doctor, but I find few doctors who are willing or able to discuss OTC supplements.

My hair was no thicker or luxurious on day 365 than it was on day one. When you’re 65 and both parents (as well as most aunts and uncle’s) have thinning hair, it’s time to buckle up buttercup and face the fact that you will be living with thinning hair. Key word here is LIVING!😄 Thanks for this excellent video!☮️💜

I'm still taking them not only to stop the breakage, which it has helped. I now just want something that will help my hair grow longer. I feel like it has stalled.

Fortunately, I haven't run into problems (that I know of) despite taking a variety of supplements, but I will now be much more careful. I'm told I look remarkably young for my age, but I now wonder at what price. I take Ubiquinol and Astaxanthin along with a collagen supplement that contains Selenium 30mcg, Zinc, Biotin, Copper, Iron, Silicon and Vitamins A, C, D and E. What are your thoughts re Niacinamide taken orally (1000mg/day) as is being advised by the Skin Cancer Council of Australia?

I think it's good for Drs to get more involved. As a transplant patient the drugs I take are KNOWN to deplete various nutrients & interfere with the competence of the body to do its thing with protecting & managing itself. We need actual doctors to pay MUCH more attn to this instead of being focused on the one medical prob they're trying to solve (like hypertension) to the exclusion of the affect treatment has in subtle ways that has a big effect on the patient! So you go Doc! Family medicine is where it's at!

Unfortunately a lot of food is unregulated too. Why ? Who knows. Probably lobbying. I think they are also scarred to do that since of pushback from companies and people.
I did dietitian course and ever since it hurt me to look at food that they are selling. There are literally foods with wording on packaging “no sugar added” yeat in the ingredient list there is sugar. I just saw a coffe like that.
