If there is a small hole like 5x5cm, you can cover it with that sticker for some time until you find a better solution because the rain will ruin it. You can use it to write something on it (your plan, calculate your suplies, make a calendar and so on). There are a lot of useful things you can do with it.

It lasts that long because it is dehydrated most likely. Also, in a survival situation, I don't think cancer risks are your biggest concern.
