After many,many, unhappy haircuts later….I was so desperate for a haircut that I went to a Supercuts to cut my hair. I told the person what I wanted, what I haven’t been happy with and what others have done that I don’t want. Sue listened and did an amazing job!!! She’s not a curly expert but she really knows hair. I couldn’t believe that I got the best haircut in over fifteen years from a Supercuts for $25 and $10 for tip.
I've been seriously tempted to do that after getting a few $100+ haircuts I haven't really been happy with.
It truly shows that it's not where you're getting your cut, it's finding someone who takes the time to prioritize what you want!
totally agree 100 percent...all that said I was thinking of using Mels univeral cut! I bought scissors..after being disappointed. Any thoughts?
@@kristincabeza-erikson4488I have curly hair and I cut it myself, I make bangs and layers and then go to Supercuts and get them to make sure it's all even because that part is tricky. I just know I won't get it done at a salon how I want it.

I literally panic when my hairstylist says she's thinking about retirement. Eventhough she is not curly hair trained, her daughter has curly hair so she taught herself to cut wavy/curly hair and she does it pretty well. She understands my hair texture and what looks good for me. She always listens and craft the haircuts for and with me. When she retires I don't know what I'm going to do, I trust nobody else.
Reading these comments I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's given up on salons. I went to a Ouidad certified salon to get my hair cut two years ago, I was so excited to finally have someone who specialized in curly hair cut my hair. My layers ended up looking odd, she had absolutely no idea how to style my hair, and it was expensive. I have 3a hair and when I left my hair was wavy at best. I cried all the way home and since then I just started cutting my own hair. Why pay all that money for something I'm never satisfied with?
I’ve been to a Ouidad salon to get my hair highlighted and I don’t know why I went back 2 more times but I have never walked out of there happy. It’s so disappointing going to salons that claim to be curl experts but then make you cry.
I had a very similar experience at the beginning of the year with a would be curly hair expert. The bad haircut has not grown out fully yet. I complained to her and got my 120€ back! The other places I went to afterwards to correct at least some of the disaster she caused, seemed overwhelmed and clueless that I have been staying away from salons since then and tried my hand at it watching Mel‘s videos.
To me, I think it's all about seeing a hair stylist's portfolio. If you've seen that they've worked with curly hair before and have done so relatively well, they could be right for you. However, I would always always recommend a consultation. At the salon I go to, I have been dealt a very lucky hand because there are two Ouidad certified curly hairstylists that I have gotten haircuts from back and forth that cut my hair so well. I don't think it's that they are Ouidad certified curl hairstylists but, that they pay a lot of attention to specific aspects of my hair that I've never even noticed (ex. my curls are heavier on one side) and always talk to me about how they've recently got new scissors for curly haired clients as well as going to curly hair information sessions just as Mel provided. They also do the what I love/don't love about my hair thing which is nice. Apparently, the salon I go to has also won an award in the area I live for being the best hair salon one year. Overall, I think it boils down to how much they are willing to learn and pay attention to your hair and its needs, especially what you want as well by focusing on you and no other client during your appointment time. On the other hand, I also went to a Devacurl salon twice and the last time I was there, the stylist showed me that she didn't care about my hair very well by keeping me in the hair dryer section for almost an hour while dying another client's hair.
No! No trust. I have been disappointed so many times. It’s a weird feeling to pay someone money who’s made your curly hair look terrible 😕
Story of my life!! So many times. I have driven several hours to see curly hair “specialists” and been so disappointed and poor with worse hair afterwards 😑
I cut my own hair now using Mel’s technique from the video with Amanda cutting her own hair. Def by far the best haircut I’ve ever had. I’ve been using it the past couple of years or so and it always turns out great.
@@megandavis7357 Haven't been in a salon since 2019 and in no rush to go back. The last stylist I went to claimed to have curly hair experience and education, I left there with screwed up curl pattern and looking like I had stuck my finger in a light socket.
Started doing it myself and have only messed it up once, but I had also used a different technique that clearly doesn't work for it. It may take me a long time but overall I'm happy with the results. Don't know if I'll ever get back in a chair now.
That goes for even having curly lashes! First time I tried lash extensions recently & it wrecked my beautiful naturally curly lashes 😢 so I’m super not trustful bc of my hair and lashes

In my city, there are only 3 hairstylists that "have experience with curly hair"... And after visiting them all, I can undoubtedly state that only 1 knows what they're doing 😢

I commend you for finding someone; I live in a big city where no one knows what they are doing … big on the hype and hustle to sell but not on the education and effort to truly care for the client’s hair. Time is money as they say, especially in salons, so consumer beware.
@@AL-dy1ljoh my god, SAME!!! I've felt embarrassed for not being able to find stylists who know what they're doing, and thought it was just me. It's insane how esp in bug cities there's this HYPE to sell anything and the customer is being gaslit to believe "everyone's an expert" with their so-called original techniques and novel methods. Then how come when I do my own hair, it turns out better? I'm happy for people with straight and 'easier' hair who can get their hair done the same way *anywhere*, sad we have to become our own experts.. or is it haha
I paid $300 for a curly cut from a curly specialist and she had no idea what to do with my hair that’s borderline between curly and coily. She also mentioned doing a twist out next time even though I said I only like to do wash’n gos. I felt embarrassed by my hair type, and it really bothered me assuming certain hair styles because I’m black. She didn’t even dry my hair because she said it would just make it poof out more. I felt embarrassed and I just don’t have the heart to try again.

I have been learning from you since middle school, when my hair was my biggest insecurity. I had poofy, frizzy hair and just did not know how to care for it, but then I found you! Now I'm in college, and my hair is literally my pride. I get compliments left and right on my hair. You have helped me embrace my natural hair and gain confidence in myself. I am so proud of the following you have gathered throughout the years, and now you're teaching classes in Vegas to help educate more and more people about the beauty of curls! I'm 65 with wavy/curly hair, and I can say that until the early 2000s I never had any issue with hair stylists knowing what to do with my hair, in fact they educated me! Then my beloved stylist moved across the country, and trying to find a new one was a nightmare. No one believed I wanted to wear my hair curly. They always went in to blow dry it straight and I always had to remind them not to! The only option was to go to a salon that was specifically for curly hair. It seemed to be all or nothing! In the last year though I've noticed a lot more women wearing their hair curly, and thanks to youtube I've gotten back to taking good care of my hair. I'm really hoping more stylists will learn to work with curly hair as more women seem to be wanting it.

Even the "curly" salon that I go to doesn't seem to know what to do with wavy hair, in large part. It's so stressful trying to find a stylist.

What I hate is that you have to go to a “Specialty Salon”;to get your hair cut correctly if you have curly hair. It’s way too expensive, so once a year I get to pay for someone to butcher my hair. PS Mel, you’re such a fabulous teacher. Fun, engaging, and clear.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻♥️
THIS!!!!! I'm a fine/ high density curly girl in Cosmo school and I recently asked my teacher to freshen up old layers and left that day missing SIX INCHES of hair. No one at school understands curly hair and it's tough. Your channel is amazing for curly education!!
OMG YES!!! Curlies in the Philippines actually have a lot of salon trauma because majority of hairstylists here don’t really know how to cut and style curly hair and the automatic offering is rebonding/chemically straightening hair. It’s really sad. We need curly education here! Now there are a handful of salons who are at least curl friendly but we need so much more. Thanks for being a Curly Mentor to me even when you’re far via your TH-cam videos! Am learning so much lehuhu
When I lived in the Philippines I went to a salon for a haircut and decided to try rebonding. The hairstylist gave an audible "Ahhhhh, that's much better" once my hair was straight. 🤣 He was so frustrated working on my curls.
That rebonding lasted about two days. Then the curls won.

i've had the same hair dresser for probably going on 28 years now ~ I've even moved country and I still come back to him. In fact got my hair done yesterday (YEAH!). He has long, curly hair and taught me how to take care of it, style it, etc. I'm forever grateful and would never cheat on him.. Side note, I should have said that he's got long, curly hair like me. That's why he's so darn good. ☺
Seriously! I was a salon kid with an abuela hairdresser who just detangled by pulling my 3b/c DRY hair straight down from top to bottom. While my mom was a manucurist who tried to keep my hair up or in braids. I have only trusted ONE person to cut my hair and that was another curly who worked at my mom's place. However...that was in high school. I have been doing my own hair for decades! My sister-in-law is now a makeup artist and salon manager! She told me they have a curly hair specialist...but no credientials were even listed on their site and they had a pixie cut with straight hair!!! NO, THANK YOU!

I finally found an amazing stylist where I just show up and she does what she wants. I get compliments on my hair constantly. It’s so nice to be able to trust someone. I remember the days where someone tried to cut my hair with a razor, never again!

I did a lot of research to find a curly hair stylist in my area my first session was ok i learned what slip should feel like. We didnt so much cutting. Iam growing my hair out and it reached the point where it was pyramiding. I asked to have the top cut into long layers. I also wanted to see how a professional styled my hair. As in my curly hair journey ive learned its not just the right products and how you use them. But how part or style your hair that can make a big difference and i was struggling figuring out where my hair should fall what constitutesas my "bangs"😂. She had just got back from a rizzos training but...she didnt fix the top, there were long pieces sticking out. i just did with your latest vid it was exactly what i needed her to do and know those top layers are curling bc they arent so heavy which is whst i wanted. The style was terrible i wanted to cry went home and touched it up the cut. I wore the style for a day or two to see if it was...no it just sucked. I wanted some in person guidance but i get so much more from you and experiments.
Two important things I’ve learned from Mell that have really helped me:
1. Cold feeling hair means it’s still damp/wet (I was touching my hair too soon in the drying process).
2. I wasn’t using enough product.
If I could request a video please on bangs that don’t curl or have any volume - even after finger coiling, pinning, using rollers. It’s very frustrating!

Ive had this experience too often! It's one thing for random people to judge whatever they want to think idc, but a hair professional? Should be able to tell the difference between natural waves and unnatural! I think it's pretty obvious but i guess people with straight hair dont care to understand?

I found a stylist I loved for years until I caught her talking smack about me and my decision to get a pixie cut with another customer and laughing at me. I never went back, even though she had done an amazing job cutting my curls over the 5 years we had known each other. Remember to be kind!

i’ve been lucky enough where any salon i go to looks at my long, wavy hair and treat it with the respect it deserves. and all i ask for is a trim w/ my layers and that’s what i get and they haven’t messed me up (yet).😮💨
Yes, there is a serious lack of training and understanding when it comes to how to handle and deal with curly hair in salons. This is the main reason that I have taken the task of learning as much as I can about how to properly care for my wife's curly hair. Her hair was a source of shame and ridicule all through her childhood. Her own family did not know how to help her and didn't encourage her to learn.
My wife has told me that I am the only one that she trusts to cut and style her hair. I have learned how to wash her hair, braid her hair, and cut her hair. I'm so grateful for the resources that I have found online.
My wife also has very thick hair, and as a result, likes to keep it short to help with headaches. For this reason, I would like to see more about short, curly hair.
No. I had my daughter cut my hair for years, but she's all grown up in a home off her own and we have no time. After 15 months since my last cut I went to the salon and ended up with my hair too short, a blowout with frizz on a rainy day that turned into a poofball. I had to recondition and style it the next day to get through to my next wash day.
By using your tips I finally got my curls back after twenty years of not seeing them due to health reasons. I’m blessed to have a hair stylist I found about ten years ago that can cut and style my hair in any style I ask. I make sure I tip her well because I love her and want her to know how much I appreciate her. Unfortunately due to health reasons I couldn’t style long curly hair anymore and I had to have her give me a very short pixie, but I still follow Mell tips to keep my hair as healthy as I can manage. My hair guy is a great colorist & that's mainly why I've stayed with him. I go in every 6-8 weeks for color & trim. At this point I'm used to taking my own shampoo, conditioner & even stylers into a salon because I'm super sensitive to fragrance & certain ingredients (you'd be surprised how many stylists do not get this & will automatically use hairspray without asking or argue with you) I hate having to sit in a chair for 45 mins for a blow out because the stylist doesn't know how to diffuse properly. I'd rather just leave the appt with wet hair & style it at home or let it air dry.
I'm the same with chemicals. I looked up the ingredients in the VERB products..... NO THANK YOU!!! I still haven't found any natural products. Wat do you use??

I would love a deep dive video on low density, wavy hair ❤ cut, style, products, everything! Especially when it comes to haircuts it feels like low density hair is very under represented in yet a lot of us are low density. I always end up overly layered and too thin looking, but no layers at all gives no shape or movement.
I experience the same thing! I always request no layering and a blunt cut to keep my ends more full.

My biggest red flag for any salon is when I ask them "who is the best at working with curly hair?" and their response 9/10 is "Oh we're all good." No. You're not all good, you just THINK you're good. I hate it when they won't just admit that either they don't have much experience/ knowledge or when they can't recommend me another stylist. "We're all good" to me is as good as saying "I don't care and I don't acknowledge that your hair is different." It's always so dissapointing.

Even before I really knew I was a wavy/curly, I really had a rough time with almost every stylist actually listening to what I was going for. And the first stylist that aced cutting, styling & color that I loved & looked good on me, was a curly haired gal I had as a coworker at the salon & spa I used to be a massage therapist at. Absolute sweet bean to boot. I unfortunately live about 2 hours away from her now, but I'm hoping to get down to her again this fall. I do okay trimming my hair these days thanks to your videos, but she does a way better job. LOL!
I have wavy 2a/2b hair but it's very thin and fragile and so many bad haircuts have butchered it over the years. I only trust one hairdresser now and fly back to the UK to get my hair done by her which is only once every 1-2 years. I am learning so much in these videos and doing a lot myself to restore my natural waves. Love this channel! Love the Guido girls! ❤️

I just got my hair cut at a place that claimed to be experts in curly hair. I have never been so unhappy from a haircut. I wanted to keep my length and just create more layers but she got scissor happy and ended up cutting so much! I have learned so much from Mel about how to style my hair and i’ve been so happy with my hair for the last 2 years but when my stylist asked me what products i was using and how i was styling it, she told me to throw out all my products (i use curlsmith) and to buy Innersense products (their products). I was too nice to say anything but I wish i had the courage to say no, i know what works for my hair and this is how I style it. Additionally, my hair turned out super wavy and did not enhance my curls at all. When i showed her a picture of how my hair usually turns out, she accused me of finger coiling my hair and mannipulating it to look like that. I told her I just use a denman brush and she said not to do that because it’s damaging. I wanted to walk right out of there but I didn’t want to be rude. My hair doesn’t look awful but it’s not what I wanted. My curls were so long and beautiful and now they stretch out by day 2 because of the way she cut it. It’s called Thairapy in Pasadena, California. Do NOT go there!!
Im still trying to find someone who understands wavy hair is... wavy hair. And to not take a flat iron to my hair! Omg im so tired of that, especially when i specifically state to not do that to my hair.

Thanks to your channel, I finally found the courage to cut my own hair and have never turned back! My hair has finally grown back out from the last big chop I had to do due to an unfortunate miscommunication with a stylist that left my hair looking like a triangle straight and wavy. But i have rarely been able to find someone who knows how to deal with wavy hair even where i live, so cutting my own hair has saved me hundreds of dollars. ❤
Hi Mell. Love to see empties video. Have you thought of traveling to other major cities in Canada to do some curly education classes? You get to see some sites and work. Love that your educating stylists since hair schools are not getting the job done. With Amanda’s editing skills, have you thought of doing a side by side video on how you change techniques or products to adjust for different textures. Also, love when you show different textures.
I went to a curly hair specialist for the first time a few weeks ago…The haircut was just ok and she did not really know how to style it. My other hairdresser back in California did such an amazing job and was not a curly hair specialist. She just knew hair and understood my hair specifically.

Took me three days this week to book an appointment with everyone. My hair is naturally wavy sometimes curly. I wear it natural and always wanted the layers. Every hair dresser I went to prior said "we don't want you to be curly sue" but that's literally what I wanted to help the pattern initially. Well yesterday I went into a chain salon and the lady doing my hair, understood exactly what I wanted. I was actually so impressed. And she has the same type of hair as me. So it was easy to understand what I needed done. The first person I went to in the three years of my journey who finally understood.

As a rule of thumb, I always like to seek out a stylist that has hair texture very similar to mine. A challenge within itself, but until more stylists get proper education about curls like this, it's the only thing that I've found to work. (I haven't been to a stylist in a decade bc of this rule, but I have learned a lot about styling my own hair!)
I'd love to see a basic tutorial on buying styling tools like flat irons, blow dryers, electric hot combs, etc.! There are so many buzz words that easily cloud the judgment of consumers. Like what the hell is ceramic titanium 😂 I thought it was one or the other 😭 The video doesn't have to be too specific, I understand sponsorship clauses and what not, but if you could please just walk us through what a lot of these buzz words even mean and what to stay away from, that would be immensely helpful! 💜
Yes to seeking out a stylist that has similar hair to your own! My stylist has similar hair to me and she truly understands what I want and need. Took a while to find my person, but as long as she's doing hair and in the area, I'll be going to her!
A hairstylist I only went to for a couple years tried to diffuse my hair one time after she put curl cream on my hair and my hair came out is big and frizzy. She never diffused my hair after that and later on I found a new person. And to make things worse I have a lot of hair that is coarse so double whammy. I’m glad to see people learning how to care for wavy/curly or coily hair either for others or themselves.

Michigan needs some curly hair education, my hair stylist does pretty good at the cut, but I usually have to style it at home or I just have her straighten it, she is a fantastic stylist, I love her, it’s just that there are no options for curly hair specialists in my state. I think that they do not realize the need for moisture and sealing that moisture in, your classes will be so fantastic for those stylists, so happy you are doing them!!!

I am 57 yrs old and although I love my curls I have had ZERO understanding on how to keep my curls... --- curls! I was just happy to not have my hair frizzy, dry, and damaged! So spirals were hit and miss - here and there. Then -- I found you! 😇 (Clouds parted! 🎶 harp playing 🎶🎶). My hair is long like Amanda and using your tutorials and techniques - i created a hair routine and I got my CURLS back once again! It is still a work in progress and I still need more bouncy. But I have only been at this for two weeks - (4 wash days). Mahalo Mell and "sis-tore" . ❤

First off, Thank you for going into the concept of wavy hair. My hair is currently short, but using your techniques, I have discovered some curls. Second I hope all is well in your part of Canada because the smoke from the north is fairly heavy here in southern KY.

Tried rebonding my hair during college cause my family kept saying my hair is messy when in fact it just needs a proper routine, and what happened at the salon was a nightmare.
The hairstylist had to put those rancid chemicals into my hair and on top of that, had to use 2 hair straightener just to tame my curls. It's like watching a murder right in front of you.
Didn't even reach 6 months until the curls came back.😅
I also got my hair colored, so yeah.
Up to this day, I'm still trying to nourish my hair back to life because of all the horrendous things that happened to it and this channel has helped me a lot .
I am so happy about the work you do :) Yes, the trust issues are real. I also made bad experiences in my youth and have not visited a salon since. They always cut half the lenght and used thinning scissors for my "frizzy, poofy" back which would make it even more poofy.
Though I do cut my hair by myself now, it would be very nice to get it done by a professional because life gets stressful sometime.

I was cutting my own hair for almost 4 years, but it was really out of shape. Spent $100 in a curly hair specialist and my hair got too short, again 😢. I kept telling her it happens all the time. I won’t cut my hair anymore this year.

Schools Definitely need to add curly education to their classes! Im in KS and i Definitely need a curly cut soo bad since my shape was all out of whack. But couldnt really find anyone.

First I wanted to thank you for your videos. A couple of months ago I discovered your TH-cam channel and It has really changed the way I look at my hair and what it needs. It's been a long time since I knew what to do with it and how to take care of it properly.
Having that said, I recently had my hair cut in a salon who suppossedly knew how to care for curl pattern and it's been a mess, I feel so frustrated that I want to cry. I didn't go to a salon since my transition and It felt exciting having the experience again but It just wasn't it. When I sat down I didn't felt heard or seen, she just cut whithouth care and what's even worse I had to come back because it wasn't properly cut. Now I have to fix it myself and I want to give myself that expirience. The thing is my curl pattern is 3c/4a and I wanted to ask you If you could do a video on how to cut this type of hair? It would really mean a lot.

Stylists should be required to have some basic curly hair knowledge to get a license now & to renew their license & schools should teach some basics or lose their accreditation.
