Mel, I HAVE to tell you. The pigtails cut AND this cut combined and IM NOT SORRY but I'm not visiting my hairstyler anymore. My hair has never been this light and beautiful. Thank you. I absolutely ADORE you.
I did the pigtails first and this one immediately after to even the layering! Got myself the haircut a couple months ago and then just the one of this video a few days ago and the hair looks great. I have 2b/2c waves. Try it out!
Mel, you do such a great service to the entire DIY hair trimmer community. Not only do you save us money, you save us tears, lol. I owe hundreds of dollars in gratitude!!! But ya know...I'll pay ya back in likes 😊❤
The reality is most regular hairdressers don't understand curly wavy cuts and way too many hairs don't get cut properly. It takes a long time but i know Mel's methods are more thorough than visiting a commercial premise with 1 hour on the clock!
Hi Mel! English it’s not my first language, so I’ll probably mess up with the grammar and I’m sorry for it. I’m Italian and I live in a really small town where hairdressers are not used to treat curly hair. I struggled a lot to find someone who could actually understand my hair pattern and cut it properly, in facts it’s been ruined one too many times and I always left the saloons in tears. I started cutting my hair by myself in the past year and you’ve been my guru ever since. Today I followed this tutorial and it turned out absolutely gorgeous, so I wanted to thank you for being a life saver and for spreading your knowledge to people like me. P.S. I have mid-back lenght hair with different curl patterns (from 2B on the bottom to 3A on the top layers) and this technique worked out really fine.
Let's get our main girl to a million subscribers I feel like she works so hard and shares sooo much information for free!!! I really appreciate your time and information girl I'm sure you have helped so many ❤ you have helped me feel more confident and helped me love my waves ❤
Great tutorial! I'd love to see a diy round layered cut for chin length hair. My layers always look fine from the front but it's the back of my head that always looks heavy and not so round like I'd want. Love your channel!
When I went to "beauty school" in the 90"s I learned this method, it was called pivot point cutting, and I have used it for 30 years. This combined with my ouidad cutting training has served me well as a stylist.
Thank you for this! I paid $400 back in Feb for the haircut from hell, and I've been waiting desperately for it to grow out so I could try and fix it. Everytime I do one of your DIY haircuts at home, my hair looks amazing. Never going back to a hairdresser EVER!
Loveee these hair cutting videos so much. Ty for breaking it down even just the vertical and horizontal explanation helps a lot bc I never understand till you just explained it 😅
Thank you so much! I'm so glad I found your channel here. My best hairdresser changed his job years ago and havent found any good and payable one till now. I had such nice long hair but now its short cause last one let me look like an umbrella and the end of the curls been messed up. I started to get me a scissor set by amazon and started to use and follow your steps in your videos. Today I will try this one. Its brilliant and i think its not as tricky as if we had straight hair😅 ❤
Mel!! I was literally thinking of cutting my hair because my curls have outgrown, one day later here you are! This’s almost like magic lol- you always read my mind, what a connection- YOUR LOYAL FAN ASA
I have been using the pigtail haircut for a long time but as soon as I got above my shoulders I just couldn't achieve the look I wanted. It literally made my day when I saw this video! Just gave it a shot today and it is the best haircut I've ever had! Your videos are so helpful and has made going natural so easy!
I gave this a try last night on my longish, fine, 2B to 3B waves. Despite my variable curl pattern, I got really nice, even layers and more definition and movement with wet cutting. The back is especially nice for a DIY.
The difference this made in how my hair lays is unreal! The heavy rectangle at the bottom is gone, and the top blends in so nicely now. I hardly cut any hair!
This video is exactly what I needed!! So much easier to understand compared to other videos I’ve seen. I’ve been doing your pigtails cut for about 3yrs💜 saved me from more traumatic salon haircuts. I’ve always wanted more layers though and wasn’t sure how to get them w/o jeopardizing my length so this is perfect!!! Thank youuu, can’t wait to do this.💗🙌🏼 obsessed w your channel & personality
This worked so well!! My wavy salon cut has grown out since, well, over a year. You made it easy (read: not scary) to cut some HELLO! back into my hair. Thank you!
Hi Mel I love your videos! Do you think in the future, when doing a before and after photo, you could use a pic from directly after a wash day as opposed to before so its easier to see the differences between the haircut when the hair is in a more similar state? Hope that makes sense 😅
yesterday I tried this method and um I want to cry because of how good my hair looks THANKS TO YOU! I was confused at first but I got the hang of it and I'm finally in love with my hair ❤
I have tried to cut my own hair for the past 5 years and your tutorial videos have been a great help to understand how cutting and layering works thanks a bunch❤
Thank you so much for not speeding up your video THANK YOU! This is so helpful, you were so detailed with your explanations. I've never ever cut my own hair before (or anyone else's) but I've been wanting to give it a try. I'm so glad I found you!
It would be awesome to have a breakdown of which diy hair cut we should do depending on what we need. Im still doing a modified pigtails cut and dont know if I should do this instead?
This amazing tutorial really works at getting rid of my horrible shelf thing at the back of my head. I've just finished styling my hair after the cut and, if im honest, was kinda dreading checking the back but it looks so good. I can't believe that it came out so neat and even. There was only a centimetre or two that I actually removed but it has given me a totally beautiful and professional looking haircut. Thank you so much for this tutorial Mel, it's really really appreciated ❤
This is soooo helpful! Its being around 5 years now that I started cutting my own hair cause I can't get a decent haircut and I thought: if it won't look how I wanted and is not going to be well done, I might as well do it myself and at least don't complain about wasted money... turned out I can do a decent job but didn't quite know how to round it up more, thanks a million!
I just did tried this tutorial yesterday because my layers were outgrown and my hair wasn’t cut evenly so it looks like two different cuts on my head and after I tried it my layers look better and more even. I also tried her bangs tutorial and I love my new look. Be sure to but enough time in to the cut though because it is time consuming if you want it to look good. Good luck!
Would love to try this but could you please explain in more depth what you mean by using the other section as a guide and then not cutting as much from the bulkier section? Are you cutting off a bit more from that guide section? Thank you
Mel thank you so much for posting this. I just tried it on my own hair after a bad Deva cut. It’s not dry yet but I can tell the shape is 100x better than before. The layers from the Deva cut were not uniform and I was left with a bottom heavy triangle shape. A lot of my ends were stringy and uneven. One quadrant of hair had a long layer on top, a short layer in the middle and another long layer on the bottom. Idk how she managed to cut my hair that way.
I just did this hair trim and it came out great. I always cut my own hair and I used the pigtail haircut you posted last time. I was in need of a trim and didn't want to go to the salon and was about to cut it. I might still cut it some more but this will hold me over until I decide.
Hey Mell! I was wondering if you were ever thinking about doing a curly hair/professional styling masterclass. I'm sure people would love it! I often think about how I would enjoy becoming a professional hair stylist, but I don't really have the ability to go to a school...
Thank you for the video! I'm curious how you'd do this for someone with several different curl patterns. Would you use the same method with dry hair, or would you do something else all together? I'm always looking for ways to improve my home haircut game, and while my front curls are 3A/B, the back is closer to a 2B. I've had more success getting it even while cutting dry as a result.
Hey Mel, I generally trim my own curls, (using more or less this method so thanks for making it so much clearer!) problem is - I now have waist length hair so the whole reaching the hair straight up part… doesn’t work when my hair is longer than my arms can reach 😂 any suggestions for dealing with longer hair?
Very interesting! It would be helpful to see a small window in the corner of the video that shows a view of the hair from above so I can see exactly how the sections are coming out of the pinwheel
OMYGOD Mel thank you so much for sharing!! I've been hating my overgrown layers and wanted to get new even layers especially, shorter layers in the back and your video is perfect timing!! Doing this tomorrow morning!!❤🥰🙏
Excellent explanation of layering, are we more prone to these shelf triangles after doing the pigtail trim? Mine is so thick I cannot do the pigtail or wolf/ butterfly cuts
