One of my favorite DS games is Lost Magic. Real time strategy, monster collection, and a rune drawing magic system. I've never found another game like it.
Lost Magic is a curse. You play it once and you'll never stop craving for more, but there's no more, it's entirely unique. Like Guilty Gear 2 Overture, a weird blend of genres that simply existed and then disappeared.
I've been playing the DS on and off since the beginning and the joy is there's always seems to be another game that's new or those games your waiting to find, sometimes it's years before you get them.
For me, the hidden gem that never gets enough attention is Soul Bubbles. It's a spiritual follow-up to the old computer game Bubble Ghost. You have to blow a bubble through a level filled with hazards including spikes, flames and creatures. I completed it but it is great fun.
Drone Tactics was also a blast on the DS thst no one mentions. There's so many things to customize from equipment to paint, a really good rock-paper-scissor system, and a relatively decent cast of characters, this was one of my favorite games I had on the DS.
One DS game I like that I want to bring myself to playing is Super Princess Peach. Everything about it was refreshing. They switched up the story, Peach actually saves Mario. After Yoshi and Luigi, it's one of the first times Mario wasn't the protagonist but in fact they switched places. I loved the sprite art and color pallet on that game 🎨 it's one of the most beautiful 2D Nintendo DS games in my opinion and came fairly early in its life cycle. I don't hear anybody ever talking about it. I think people even forgot about it. I liked it's power ups too. Some were cute and funny.
So glad touch the dead got a mention. It was like carrying around an oldschool railschooter arcade in your pocket and I spent hours playing it as a kid.
I remember how Nintendo Gamer (I think that was the name, a UK magazine that died before the Switch) always kept Bongi-o Spirits at #100 of their top 100 DS games, choosing to cycle other games off the list instead despite them technically having a better review score. Since the DS era was the time I was most playing games, and looking into games where I end up playing only a small portion of them anyway, I'm surprised that I only knew half this list.
Nintendo needs to bring Starfy to Switch...a new entry would be amazing but I'd settle for a collection of all 5 current games ( the 1st 4 seriously deserve localizations....easily one of Nintendo's most underrated & underappreciated IPs ). Legendary Starfy has been one of my favorite DS games since it initially released, and I'm forever glad it got localized having played the 1st 3 games for GBA via an emulator.
When talking about hidden gems of the DS era one game i always need to say is Infinite Space a game made by platinum games. Its a great space opera which intresting combat and many spaceships to customize and battle with. Its one of those games u look back on and wonder why it never got a remake.
@@JTK_XXL tho that also may be difficult due to the choices u have to make ingame. Youd habe to decide which choices u animate and why. Or merge them into one.
I like the rare Japanese games like Kumatanchi and KimoKawae. Kumatanchi is a raising sim game where you, as the zookeeper, have to raise a literal half-bear girl named Kumatan, you can have Kumatan meet several half-animal friends in the zoo. Kimokawae is about a minigame game and dating sim game about Kaimu, the half-demon human protagonist meets hellspawn girls originated from hell (a cute ghoul, a Cerberus hellhound, a Poverty Goddess, a sentient marionette, a (fallen? Although she's not from hell) angel) besides a childhood friend girl. Both have interesting game mechanics and character designs and artstyles. Note: I hope you don’t mind the demon girls' back-spanking punishment minigame in Kimokawae (context: all demon girls (including the fallen(?) angel) have to be disciplined so they can fit on Earth (Human World).
I feel the urgent need to thank you! My boyfriend had lost memory of the game "Chrono twins", my search lasted almost two hours, I was about to give up when I decided to search TH-cam for videos about forgotten video games, Including lostmedia, my native language is not English, but I entered your video with a minimum of hope of finding it, he and I are very grateful, I hope to see future videos with the same theme :>
I loved Starfy so I bought 2 Starfy games from Japan for the GBA. I had difficulty playing them though and I realized how much story matters to me. I can't read Japanese. I should try again now that there's good online translation. Thanks for the very entertaining video!
That one dude just sporting a regular tommy gun in Nostaliga, alongside regular RPG tropes like a witch, a healing priest, and a swordsman... man that just really cracks me up!
Oh man, glad to see Legendary Starfy on here. I just got that one recently and it looks really good! Touch the Dead always looked neat too, and may need to add that to my library. Thanks for highlight some DS recommendations! Awesome video as always man!
OMG, that Samurai Legend Musashi music that played during the Chronos Twins segment had me smiling so wide! The gameplay could have been better, but everything else about that game still holds up, imo. The art style, the soundtrack, the characters, the enemy design! It's all so amazing! In relation to the games on this list, though, I'm super happy to see Nostalgia on here! I'd forgotten about its existence, but I had SO much fun with it, so as soon as it popped up I rushed over to ebay! Can't wait to get my copy. ❤️
YO, THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING WIZARD OF OZ! Love that game. I personally thought the trackball gimmick was really unique, which is actually what got me to play it. The battle system also reminds me of SMT 4's for some reason. Sadly never beat it though because the difficulty spikes in the last 2 or 3 chapters is actually ridiculous. B Team legitimately reminds me of Medal of Honor Infiltrator GBA for some reason. I wanna play Touch the Dead, never heard of it it before! Love my rail shooters, and it's pretty impressive the DS even has one tbh. P.S. Ever played Soul Bubbles? That's a chill game nobody ever talks about.
I love Bangai O-Spirits. A really unique game that controls like a bullet hell shooter but feels like a puzzle game thanks to its inventive level design (and the game has a level creator/editor). My only gripe with it was always that it lags soooo much on the original DS. I wonder if playing on the 3DS fixes that a bit.
That was the first game I thought of when I saw the title! Yes, playing Bangai-O Spirits on 3DS picks up a lot of the lag - though it doesn’t make it any easier!!
Starfy should come to Switch in a collection already. I already had head about it, but when I got it as the single game the person had when I bought their DS a few years ago, I was so happy.
Thanks for covering these titles. Touch the dead was very addicting and I thought it was great. I think what made it so great that there were only 2 or 3 other light rail shooters on the DS. Actually that may have been the only one of its genre on a library of thousands of games. I'd have to say Resident Evil Deadly Silence and Dementium1&2 did have a bit of the light rail shooter elements in its gameplay but still all were addicting.
Nice, a good list. When I was a young person during the DS time, I had a flash cart and I played most of these games. The Wizard of oz game was a big surprise, looks awesome
I used to be such a Starfy fan what with all the time I spent playing the first 3 games. But when it finally got localized, I sadly got tired of it. But I was happy to see it exist outside of Japan for once
Stafy came from Gameboy advance sadly never left Japan ... And is so cute and underrated series, no doubt DS version is good as well. Thanks for another great video, I didn't know about many games here. Surely I will buy it is I see it.

@@akiradkcn thanks for the heads up. Does that mean this game is short? If it is, then thats a bummer. It looks good though, the look kinda reminds me of PS1 RPGs.
At around 6:16 there's a song from Dragonseeds from the PS1 playing in the background, I heard the vocals and was immediately snapped back to the old days.
Man! for some reason I been wanting to collect for the Nintendo DS lately. for the Last few Months Ive been on a tare! picked up so many DS Games Plus a DSI XL. They picked the original formula and turned into a really neat 2D action game. We still have the floaty jumps of the original, but there's real levels, a story and such. Great game, but forgotten.

BANGAI O SPIRITS, so that’s what the title of the game I was desperately tryna look for. It was one of those games I played with the r4 on the ds, way back when I was kid and now I finally found it. Nice vid and thanks 🙏.

I had it on the DS and my idiot self sold it with the console when the 3DS came out ... I wish we got a remake of it, it's probably one of the best looking game on the DS. Those animations are breathtaking.
"Mazes of Fate is definitely one of the best Dungeon Crawlers I could play on a handheld, next to the complicated but not bad "Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain".
B Team Metal Cartoon Squad reminds me of Tower 57, a sadly overlooked pixel art PC game. It's a bit glitchy but it's like The Chaos Engine with a dollop of Bioshock.
A game pretty much no one talks about is Zubo, which is a Pokemon clone published by EA with blocky type characters and a rhythm based battle system. It was a decent experience, though I did find it annoying how the characters would complain of hunger frequently, making me use up my food items to make them stop complaining.
there's one game on the DS I have heard nothing about, but, I also borrowed it and never actually owned it: Lost Magic. you draw runes on the touch screen as you move around a map...I don't recall the details. just being on a timer and getting stuck on a level. Then having to return it.
@@thatvideogamesshow Sadly its stupidly expensive to pick up now. I should have bought it from Gamefly back in the day. Just checked on Amazon and its over 150. So hard to get old games now for decent prices.
Legendary starfy on ds is actually the third game of the franchise, the other two are Japan exclusive and are gba games. And as you talked about Mazes of Fate, you shoukd talk about Orcs & Elves, Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain and Dungeon Explorer.
I only knew about Ontamarama because Toshikazu Tanaka (composer for, among other things, Fatal Fury 1, the Power Instinct series, Metal Slug 4/5/7, and KOF Maximum Impact) did a lot of the music for it. However I feel like most of his tracks are a bit too heavy for the game, especially Club House Gig
You guys always surprise me. If i ever think i covered all ground on a console, this channel tells me to sit down and open up my textbook at a page of their choice👀
Mazes of Fate definitely reminds me of games like AD&D Eye of the Beholder or early Elder Scrolls games. I’m not sure if this is good or not. Games that I think deserve more discussion: Tom Clancy’s EndWar: Want more Advance Wars? This is a strategy wargame that takes a huge inspiration from that game, with a unique twist of a simultaneous phase interaction, and it’s really a fun experience. You might not think of a Tom Clancy game, but it’s honestly a fun one. Two DOS games got versions on DS which are great but not discussed enough, Populous and Jagged Alliance. If you never checked them out, you should. Populous especially has a great control scheme using the touchscreen. Jagged Alliance is a straighter port, but doesn’t exactly match any PC version’s mechanics. It’s great fun if you have any interest in that old series. I’m also a fan of Infinite Space, a Sci-Fi RPG released to little fanfare on the DS.
More hidden gems for DS:
- Monster tale.
- summon night twin edge
- legend of kage 2

Super Princess Peach, Mario 3 on 3, and Yoshi’s Island were release later in the life of the Nintendo DS as exclusives at Toy’s ‘R Us.
It's because the level design was pretty mediocre in that game so people forgot about it
I mean I knew quite a few people that had it growing up and my sister even had a copy when she was younger
I see Super Princess Peach mentioned in nearly every "hidden gems DS games" list lol
I remember Nostalgia. And how the 1.0 version of the game was unwinnable because they forgot to include a boss that you needed to beat.

Wizard of Oz is one of those games I picked up on a whim, and it's pretty good. Nostalgia got a bad wrap as a JRPG but I liked it.

there's one game on the DS I have heard nothing about, but, I also borrowed it and never actually owned it: Lost Magic. you draw runes on the touch screen as you move around a map...I don't recall the details. just being on a timer and getting stuck on a level. Then having to return it.
I dont think I have ever seen you talk about it, but a Rare DS Game I loved back in the day was Kamen Rider Dragon Knight.
Going to have to check this one out!
@@thatvideogamesshow Sadly its stupidly expensive to pick up now. I should have bought it from Gamefly back in the day. Just checked on Amazon and its over 150. So hard to get old games now for decent prices.
Wow that Wizard of Oz game looks incredible! It's like a Dreamcast/PSP game!
Wow that Wizard of oz game looks so fun!
Chronos Twin reminds me of Super Time Force Ultra a bit,
I only knew about Ontamarama because Toshikazu Tanaka (composer for, among other things, Fatal Fury 1, the Power Instinct series, Metal Slug 4/5/7, and KOF Maximum Impact) did a lot of the music for it. However I feel like most of his tracks are a bit too heavy for the game, especially Club House Gig
damn chronos twin looks amazing. im surprised no ones ever talked about it before
I kept saying I was going to play Otomramama
Srarfy games are good too.
Nice to see stuff I never knew of
I was waiting for this one tnx mate 🔥
You guys always surprise me. If i ever think i covered all ground on a console, this channel tells me to sit down and open up my textbook at a page of their choice👀
I love these videos, I always find something.
Thanks Chris!
I found out that Touch the Dead was called Dead 'N Furious outside North America, lol.
Mazes of Fate definitely reminds me of games like AD&D Eye of the Beholder or early Elder Scrolls games. I’m not sure if this is good or not.
Games that I think deserve more discussion:
Tom Clancy’s EndWar: Want more Advance Wars?
I think the two coolest games for DS are the Game and Watch gallery duology 😁
Didnt know even one of these. AMAZING thank you!!
Glad you found something new!
I’d love to play Nostalgia, but it never released in Europe, and the US copies are impossibly expensive nowadays. Shame really.
It one of those u must play any way u can loke solatorobo
Luckily, there's some pretty good DS emulators these days.
Another great video. Keep it up.
Wow a hefty amont of games I didn't knew, nice.
Wow I didn’t know DS had a house of the dead type game
There is River City game for everything now
Great video as always 🔥
