great review , Super Review... i was curious about your take on these. To me Etymotic are great ( once you get used to it). You can get an easy seal that will not slowly pull out like many universal IEMs.

I just grabbed a pair of the SE version of these for $60 (still waiting on them in the mail) after watching a bunch of reviews - including yours. Would have probably preferred the XR version, but they were about $30 more expensive. I'm excited to compare them to the Tin T4 and Blon BL-03.
I like my er2se. Just the right amount of bass so that it stays in line with the rest of the music. I dont like it when the bass draws too much attention to itself. Also after getting used to them etymotics become pretty comfortable to wear actualy.
I'm so glad you've got round to reviewing these. Been so tempted to buy them especially after Crinicales mysteriously glowing review. Now I think I might just have to go for them since you've all but confirmed their prowess! Annoying they've gone up in price in recent months which is a little dissapointing. Are these worth $220 to you?
@@SuperReview Hi. I just watched this video, its great, thanks. Not sure if youll see this comment as its an older vid, but I have to ask... I own both the 2XR and 4XR and my feelings about them pretty much precisely match yours. So... what are your favorite IEMs/ headphones, at any price? I went through the playlists here but I only see sub $100 and $200 best lists. What's even better, or much better, in your opinion? As we're apparently looking for a very similar sound I have to ask. Thanks a lot.
Fixed mine now placed superglue in the vent. And then place a low density filter sponge inside the ear tips. No nore changing the inside filter and better tone now. Now the bass is alive
Hi Mark, I guess you know about the filters that Etymotic sells for fine tuning. They say the brown filters fix the ER2XR exactly as you would like; a bit more treble energy and a bit less bass. Have you had de chance to check those?
Bought these recently. Very good sound and comfort. Because I have too much free time I've seen a lot of reviews of this and other Etymotic products, not a single mention of the filters that are required to run these property. They are tiny little things that are in the nozzle and when they clog up the sound goes almost silent. You replace them with a new filter using a special tool. I have unusually clean ears but one of the filters got clogged within two days. A pack of 4 filters costs about $15. Apparently using the earphones without them sounds bad. How was this missed in all the reviews? I read that some people never get them clogged and others clog them up in one day. Removing the filter with the tool also damages them so you can't clean and reuse them.
I've had these for about a year and filters are not clogged. Though I did recently replace the filters -- and am thinking of doing a video about it, but for a different reason. Etymotic sells a "tuning kit" with different filters that have different effects on the sound. I like the brown filters.
@@SuperReview my problem with the filters may have been due to my use of Spinfit cp800 tips. They have a wide bore and a 2nd filter got clogged. I switched back to the triple flange and not had a problem since. Seems there is a reason Etymotic tips have a tiny aperture at the very end. I bought the tuning kit and tried the brown filter, it is pretty great.
This is a fantastic review, I have watched alot of your sutff and keep coming back to this video. For like.. modern high detail and resolving iems but warm sounding earbuds in general are these still the goat, i know you mention the hexa but what do you think is better for detail retrieval and wearing for hours on end in todays iem market?
I ended up getting the SE version, I actually do prefer the XR version though. The difference in bass between them is quite steep -- my ideal is somewhere in the middle.
@@SuperReview Thanks for letting me know! I too, would prefer having slightly more bass than necessary, rather than less. I have TIN T2s and Sony MH750s right now, as far as IEMs go. I do like them, but I'm looking for an upgrade, as is usual in this hobby. I've been watching/reading reviews, including yours, trying to find out which are the best candidates it the 80-120$ range... and it looks like the T4s, Starfields, and ER2XRs are the most popular choices. But I can't decide between them. :D I think a lot of people have arrived to the same conclusion, so a shootout video between these three would do really well!
How long did it take you to get comfortable with the tri flange tips? Also how do you properly take these off? I heard some people say that you have to break the seal first before removing them so they don't perforate your eardrums or something? I just slowly twist them out till the seal breaks, is that unsafe?
Honestly took me a while -- I never got fully comfortable with ER4s, but while testing ER2s I got accustomed to it. I'm not especially careful taking them out, haven't had any discomfort there, sounds like urban legend.
I could not keep these Etymotic in my old ears ,I cant talk the chance music and listening are my life sure I love Art and the beauty of my daughters ,granddaughters ,I might try the Er2 for Xmas from Granddaughters Great Review when it changes my mind Thank You rsdno
In fact when people say that the tips don't fit os because the ear canal are short like mine and people that bend the wire trying to insert the headphones are always complaining like me. Then we have this that can go inside to much but goes not cut the sound. The best way for a perfect headphones is to have a triple cone tip,but cut the last 3rd tip and then its perfect.
Between the 2 I'd most likely still get the T4 just cause its still cheaper, and I have a more female vocal forward preference. I think if you dont have a female forward preference and still feel like the T4 is too "shouty" on occasions then I think this will be a decent alternative. From what It seems to me it has far more listenability than the ER4, which is just way too flat and depressing for me tbh~
I pretty much agree with you regarding the sound, even though I have the ER4SR and not the ER4XR. I like the ER4SR more than the ER2XR because it sounds more detailed, even if it sounds very flat and two-dimensional. I think that either the ER2SE or the ER4XR are the better sounding, so I kinda want to try them all. I also listen to them with foams (black foams by Shure).
I should've known that you'd review these, considering your recent contact with Crinacle, and how his review of the ER2XR makes them seem incredible. I just returned the T4 and bought the ikko OH10 instead of these, probably due to the better fit and better bass response. What would you prefer between the two?
Hi, Great detailed review as always. Have you come across or heard about Shuoer singer Electrostatic budget iems ? Saw a youtube review claiming they sound pretty amazing for the price probably best.. Can you please review this for us..?
Glad they came out with another option, because at the price they were charging for the other only offerings they had, The Ex4xR-Whatever they were called, they were going to stay in my Saved for Later shopping cart for eternity @ 300 plus dollars
ER3XR was my choice and I'm glad I made it. Excellent sound. The fit just doesn't bother me. The deeper it goes, the better the sound delivery. I'm sure the 2 is quite good though I never tried it and went right for the 3.
@@SuperReview The ER3 line comes with a cable of the same quality as the ER4, despite looking like the ER2 cable. I actually was surprised since I expected the ER2 cable to be the same great quality but had to actually see videos to realise it definitely has much more memory and elasticity than other Etymotic offerings. On another note, do you think you would have preffered getting the ER2SE instead? I'm leaning towards picking one up since I'd expect at the very least you get a much more dynamic driver styled bass thump without much change to the Ety house signature. Also, if you're looking for another TWS to review please give the Lypertek Tevi a look! My only complaint so far is the fit having very little security and a lack of resolution. Otherwise they seem to resemble the Etymotic style sound signature but with a subbass boost. The bass is also great quality and definitely not one dimensional from the tracks I've tested.
Did you ever decide whether you preferred the ER2XR or the ER2SE? I loved the Tin T4s but they broke and I'm not going through chi-fi customer support again. So now I'm stuck between these two right now and I think we have a similar preferred sound signature so I would really value your opinion : - )
I prefer ER2XR. And I think it's even better if you get Etymotic's filter tuning kit and swap the stock green filters for the brown. ER2XR + brown = awesome
These are $150 in my country. Which one is the best neutral sounding IEM < $100 & < $50 . (Previous IEM was Tin T2. Bought because of your review & i loved it , except the sharp "hissing" it sometimes produce)
Already ordered them, they'll arrive next week. The only think that bothers me is that I have very big ear canals, and I fear these will touch my inner ear. This ear condition has always made me suffer from ear pain, even when walking on the streets. I've been using ear plugs for noise reduction for many years now, that's what dragged me into the search for IEM's that have the best noise isolation.
@@SuperReview what's the difference between the er2xr listing on you graph database and the er2xr (green filters/stock)? Is the main er2xr listing the averaged response?
Just saying for potential buyers, the cable is just great and nothing like the Koss ones which stiffen from sweat very quickly. The ety cable is soft and pliable and stays where you put it. Great review otherwise!
The bass of the p1 is more like the er2se in quantity and the treble is hotter on the p1 when using silicones. With complys they become more similar. The p1s sounds slightly "bigger" aswell.
Great review. I didn't know you gave up on budget IEMs although the Uiisii T8s are great for a sub $50 earphones. But if you want a curious option, go for their flagship: the T9. There sub $200.
@@SuperReview thanks a lot, the hexa as a step up sounds very good (that was already the one i am interested in the most, as budget solution. I assumed you will say probably the hd600, but unfortanetly thats probably the nearest but not quiet the same. Thank you for your recomendationa
Subjectively, I find the frequency response to be quite flat on these when I sweep using Studio 6 Digital's sine wave generator. Also the bass is not elevated but quite balanced down under 100Hz. They drop a bit too early above 10kHz, but I fix that with EQ.
Maybe I missed it, what device (DAC/headphone amp) are you using for testing? I'm comparing 3XR to 4XR and just going with an iPod. I need to turn the volume up pretty high with the 4XR which is pretty inefficient and needs a headphone amp. Any recommendations on a portable good quality headphone amp or DAC/amp at a reasonable price?
I have a question. Are they loud enough. I got the t5 klipsch and Jesus. That volume and bass was so low and crap that made me wonder if the magazine what hifi got paid for the review
Depends on what you plug it into. Loudness is a product of (a) how sensitive your headphone is, and (b) how powerful your source / player is. These are not that sensitive, but will get plenty loud on all of my sources.
@@SuperReview I think SE version gets those earlier from my reading on Reddit and Headfi. I don't know exactly why XR is delayed. Maybe XR is overstocked.
In terms of sound quality what do you recommend between the ER2XR and the Arias? Generally speaking I like warm a sound signature without losing too much details. I'm not really into neutral / boring / linear graphs.
@@SuperReview thank you very much for your quick response. Considering a maximum budget of 150€ do you think I should go for something even better than the Arias or the XRs? I've read many reviews online... but I'm only more confused right now.

gobble I’m a DAC collector but on the go I like the EarStudio ES100 mk2 by Radsone. Quite frankly, it blows away anything else on mobility and actual performance (not some snake oil box costing you 10 times the BOM cost). It does USB but also Bluetooth. In fact, I’ve tried a ton of Bluetooth receivers and this is the only one that sounds acceptable. Still I use it mostly via USB. Then it has balanced output with configurable impedance and level plus a bunch of other calibration settings including EQ fine tuning. For audiophiles actually understanding audio, this is it. Quite frankly, for about US$200 combined, the T4 + ES100 + 16 core balanced cable sound better than what some pay 1000s of US$ for 😊
Hey mark! Actually, i am looking for a pair of iems for music production, mixing, mastering. i think that the etymotic er2se and er3se can be quite good for that. which one of the two you will recommend? if you dont have er3se then... it is close to er4 as it also has a balanced armature. (but not that same) actually you should review er3 to complete the line up! which one will you recommend from them, er2se with dynamic drivers or the balanced armature one's- er3se(er4ish) for my use case? Thanks
They all have basically the same frequency response, which is probably what's important for mixing. Though I don't do music production, so not an application I've used them for.

@@SuperReview Thank you very much. Got the impression you may feel the Kato beats the Etys in detail but not by much. Or maybe Kato is more detailed because it has a more elevated treble response?
@@FrankVila Detail is a tricky word, hence I put it in quotes. I just think KATO is a lot more strong in definition, in the precision on the attack, leading edge of notes. The tonal differences between them will mean different "details" are emphasized on either set.
@@SuperReview Oh sorry, when I was watching your ER4XR review I thought it was 2 different cables, turns out it had a different style below the Y split lol.
Ah yeah, that is the case. The ER4 cable, both above and below the Y-split, is nicer than the ER2 cable. Though the ER4 cable does seem more microphonic.
Blessing 2 IMO has much stronger stereo imaging, definition and separation between sounds, more detailed midrange, and better controlled bass. Treble on ER2 is a bit darker than Blessing 2, and avoids some of the B2's harshness, but overall ER2 treble is less detailed.
I use my ety er3xr with Shure grey flex fit. They fill my ear well, without the very deep insertion I can get them in quick & do sound good & great for isolation still 👍
Looking for a durable IEM under 100$ that is somewhat balanced I like trip hop and hip hop so I enjoy nice deep rich textured low end but I also value clarity and instrument separation for guitars and female vocals.. I don't like bloated sound.. I enjoy the clarity of the T2s but I found them slightly sibilant and a bit lacking in low end.. the drivers went out in one side quickly then I got the BGVP DMGs and I loved the sound signature but they broke quickly as well.. not sure if I'm just rough or if it's a QC issue.. anyways I currently have a pair of 1more triple drivers and they are okay a little bloated but not bad.. they have lasted over a year now but the wiring is starting to come loose after heavy use.. so decent build quality but since the cables attached I need to buy new phones.. any recommendations?

ATC speakers for your ears.. now there's a compliment. Am sorry engineer friend had said that the ATC 50's were the best thing he's ever heard, and he normally uses active crossover Heil AMT-1's at home.
You know how your Sony walkman does the job for you, as in you don't _need_ a $600 dollar MP3 player upgrade, my soundmagic 80c are the same (in terms of headphones) I'm wary of buying an expensive IEM because of the law of diminishing returns. Plus it's difficult to try before you buy with IEMs. . Is the jump in quality really present from a 60 dollar earphone specifically the Etymotic ER2XR?
IMO don't think about it as some objective jump in quality rating, think about the specific differences and whether or not those are what you want. I haven't heard the Soundmagic so I can't compare.
How are these eartips compared to foam ones? I tried so many eartips and i dont feel comfortable with any earbuds. I can feel some air stuck in my ear while walking i can hear my step so loud in my ear. I have etymotic earplugs for rehearsal in studio and it feels comfortable.
I haven't tried the Etymotic foam ear tips, seems like they affect the sound. I think the discomfort you're referring to is called "occlusion effect," and Etymotic has some paper describing it. Personally I'm not too bothered by occluded ears so I can't say immediately if Etymotic is better than other in-ears, but maybe check the paper: www.etymotic.com/media/publications/erl-0088-1988.pdf

Hi Mark, I guess you know about the filters that Etymotic sells for fine tuning. They say the brown filters fix the ER2XR exactly as you would like; a bit more treble energy and a bit less bass. Have you had de chance to check those?
Yep, ER2XR + brown is a great combo. Here's the FR difference I measure: squig.link/?share=Super_22_Target,Etymotic_ER2XR,Etymotic_ER2XR_(brown)

Thanks so much for the review and details, it was really helpful. If I'm a bassy guy, would you recommend me ER2XR over to the ER2SE?
100%
I recommend the XR for almost everyone.
Thank you! You think that paying $10.99 for a 3-year protection on Amazon is a good option?
I personally don't buy those.
My main takeaway from this video is that you should try the SE version.
You seem to like everything here, besides the amount of bass.
I think a lot of people have arrived to the same conclusion, so a shootout video between these three would do really well!
Those are three really good options. T4 and ER2XR are my preference. I end up using ER2XR more often, I prefer the fit.

I have no control and I ordered the ER2SE, so I'll try that out this week.
@@SuperReview thoughts on the er2se?
I should've known that you'd review these, considering your recent contact with Crinacle, and how his review of the ER2XR makes them seem incredible.
I just returned the T4 and bought the ikko OH10 instead of these, probably due to the better fit and better bass response.
What would you prefer between the two?
I like the midrange on the ER2, but the fit of the OH10 is much more convenient for me.
@@SuperReview Alright that is basically what I was thinking. Thank you so much for the reply :)

Glad they came out with another option, because at the price they were charging for the other only offerings they had,
The Ex4xR-Whatever they were called, they were going to stay in my Saved for Later shopping cart for eternity @ 300 plus dollars
Yeah, ER2 is a much easier pill to swallow -- and I think it's better for music anyway.
ER3XR was my choice and I'm glad I made it. Excellent sound. The fit just doesn't bother me. The deeper it goes, the better the sound delivery. I'm sure the 2 is quite good though I never tried it and went right for the 3.
Which cable do ER3 come with?
@@SuperReview Just the stock cable for the ER3XR. I have not upgraded to the 4 cable
An indication of the type of music you listen to in your reviews of earphones would be helpful. Thank you.

I ordered from Amazon.
Hope it works out.

Hi Super, are you still around in this review? Wanted to ask you if you think the ER2XR are as detailed as the Kato? or how would you compare both?
I think KATO beats it in technicalities like "detail," definition, separation, etc. I do prefer the tuning on the Etymotic though.
Is the cable on the ER2XR the same one as the extra rubber one that comes with the ER4XR?
My ER4 didn't come with an extra cable.
How is this versus the blessing 2?
Blessing 2 IMO has much stronger stereo imaging, definition and separation between sounds, more detailed midrange, and better controlled bass. Treble on ER2 is a bit darker than Blessing 2, and avoids some of the B2's harshness, but overall ER2 treble is less detailed.

If it was between this which is $80 on amazon vs $160 for the er4xr which would be better? Also is the noise isolation better on this vs er4xr?
I prefer ER2XR, bonus if it's half the cost. Same sound isolation as far as I can hear.

The SE / SR line is more reference-focused.
@@SuperReview music recorded in studio is usually sound flat(most of pop, electronic, and edm), if other headphones make it sound not flat it is a coloration which is bad. my point is flat doesnt mean bad, it can simply be the way it was recorded, binural and live recordings sound very good in etymotics, i use this settings in jriver witch make my er2se sound better(true to the way it was recorded) than er4 series. you can try this parametres out on er2, q=1

I know that this video is old, so I hope someone can reply to me. How do these Etymotic compare to the SeeAudio Yume?
I would take the ER2XR personally.
@@SuperReview thank you for replying. What makes the etymotic sound better to you?
More textured across the board.
DeepPenetration™ InBrainBassInsertion© IEMs that literally violate your ears. In a good way? Yeah in a good way.
idk, when you put that in your ear, look so creepy :v
I never have iem that fit like that..
It's good to know what's possible 😬
Fit looks like a needle pushed inside your ear wtf
Can someone recommended a mic cable that fits the semi proprietary mmcx connectors of these, so I can occasionally use them for phone calls?
I don't know where to find what you're looking for (maybe AliExpress), but you can also consider Bluetooth amps like ES100, Qudelix, and Fiio BTRs.
@@SuperReview I have a pair of Fiio LCBT2, which uses regular mmcx, and they do not fit. Perhaps 3.5mm bluetooth adapters are better choices. Thanks.
