SEArch+/Apis Cor - Phase 3: Level 4 of NASA’s 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge

  • SEArch+/Apis Cor of New York won first place in Phase 3: Level 4 in NASA’s 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge. This team focuses on regolith construction to provide radiation shielding and physical protection.
    The competition for this stage challenged teams to use modeling software to create a full-scale habitat design. This level built upon an earlier stage that required 60 percent design completion; for this round, submissions were 100 percent complete.
    Entries were scored on architectural layout, programming, efficient use of interior space, and the 3D-printing scalability and constructability of the habitat. Teams also prepared short videos providing insight into their design as well as miniature 3D-printed models that came apart to showcase the interior design. Points were also awarded for aesthetic representation and realism.
    NASA’s 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge aims to further the progression of sustainable shelters that will someday occupy the Moon, Mars or beyond by pushing citizen inventors to develop new technologies capable of additively manufacturing a habitat using indigenous resources with, or without, recyclable materials.
    The 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge is managed through a partnership with NASA’s Centennial Challenges Program and Bradley University. Bradley has partnered with sponsors Caterpillar, Bechtel and Brick & Mortar Ventures to administer the competition.     I like the circular rising access-way, avoiding elevators, that goes to every level. I want it slanted, not stepped, so heavy equipment can be pushed up, and robots can make their own way up and down quickly. This makes the habitat cylinder wider, to make it a gentle slope. You can move a lot more equipment into your habitat if it's on wheels, rather than you have to carry it!!! This cries out for similar construction methods that were used to build the pyramids... inside sloped access tunnel.

    How are they going to print that over 50 days without getting it full of dust? By the end it has finished printing, the inside will be a sand castle.

      yes this seems to be a problem with every building design i have seen in the competition, except for the inflatable designs, so perhaps they could create a large temporary inflatable structure, seal the edges, and construct the permanent building inside, then remove the inflatable structure once its complete

      Actaully, a shell design would be good. It could protect the inside which is being printed and once done the shell could be a permanent structure to it or be removed for more construction.

    Great design! I gotta say there was a lot of good considerations made here and I enjoyed pausing at each frame to go over each description.
    I would want to make sure it is understood that plant roots consume oxygen and efforts need to be made to optimize what they need in the right proportions at the right cycles.
    Also, I suggest building a prototype inside a large glass vacuum dome in Utah or similar cold but dry winter spots to do live testing.
    Likewise at the moon, build one there for additional live testing without the outer hollow core glass brick dome under vacuum but pressurized to match Mars and filled with similar radiation shielding (krypton gas?) Proportional to what will be experienced on Mars at different angles.

    I don’t mean to just sit around throwing rocks at those who are making things happen, but that rover pictured parked outside is going to need a pressurized garage where it can be maintained and repaired.

Also way bigger than the other two finalists and they also won the foundation n leak challenges so you know they have their materials n printing tech down. Give this team a contract Elon!       @@madalinradion the BFR is for launching and landing on Earth. The Hercules is for operations on Mars. Different environment, different requirements.

    I don't think SEArch+/Apis Cor spent nearly much time as their competitors (at least team Zopherus) on refining what kind of construction equipment they're proposing to use. A scissor lift is completely the wrong choice to build this structure (A work platform that can't get close to the structure? really?) I'd think some combination of a telescopic manlift and/or a telebelt would would work much well - with a dexterous printer head on the end of course. Having the ability to get astronauts makes future maintenance of concrete much easier.
    Let's get a CAT-Putzmeister joint team working on this :)

    Why don't they use ladders instead of stairs inside these towers? They would increase usable area and since Martian gravity is only 1/3 of ours its way easier to climb them.

    I dont get it.. why dont we search for a mega cave to begin with..? with all that water existing in this planet maybe thousands of years ago there should be many caves under the surface. Put a door and fill it with air and heat... then you get a starting point to create anything on place...

    Why wouldn't you use some of the natural landscape for shelter , there are hills , mountains etc . I would think also that much could be learned from shelter on the moon base first , it seems more logical that any type of living /working arrangement should be on one level , maybe take a hint from the Arctic /Antarctic settlements before we start building skyscrapers , maybe dreaming Logically might help 🍀

    First of all, you can't just trow a garden on your wall.. it needs the right quantity of co2, and nutrition, if you want to be efficient and optimal.. is better to use a closed environnement... second things, how do you make 3d printed concrete with no water

    Assuming a starship landing mass of 100 metric tons someone should use systems like these and design effective water, oxygen, and methane production facilities and a small silicate or steel manufacturing system with regolith utilization, both to have a total mass low enough for single landing implementation. I say this since I see steel cranes in the video and widow reinforcement and plexiglass, all of which need manufacturing in situ and whoever designs that first and gets on the first missions is like the first lumber mill in the Americas and is guaranteed a whole planet of resources to sell to companies trying to build for the first settlers.

      If you had 100t-to-surface capabilities, the cheapest, safest, and easiest way would be to prefab and test habitat modules on Earth and simply land them on Mars.

    windows?? natural light?? That is not the earth!! All those classic earth architecture principles does not apply.
    Just dig and place the whole habitat underground using solar panels and led to light.. The same thing you have to use to grow your food in an efficient way, this also save all the pressure tight structure because you use the same weight of the ground above you to counter the pressure.
    Windows = Poor light because solar radiation on mars is low, poor radiation shielding, a weak spot for the joints, etc.
    All that for what?? to look over the windows to see the climate outside??

      Natural light saves on power, which is a big deal. It let's you see what's happening outside which is important. And it's bad for psychological health to have no windows. The amount of light you'd get is actually quite a lot, the same as earth on a cloudy day. And the joints were reinforced around those points. Radiation shielding was dscussed in the video, to not be a problem, since it was restricted to shallow angles, where the atmosphere can provide some protection.
      I agree on the underground habitat point, idk why they aren't going that route. The challenge was for a 3D printed habitat. I guess digging out a structure is just harder than printing it?

      @@serenacula3256 sorry, but martian researches are not tourist, they are not on vacation.
      As humans, we have live in caves for thousands of years without problems, for the first steps on mars we need to do the same, they would go outside anyways so not sure why it bother so much. Seeing outside is not important.. what do you expect to find? Rain? a little green guy? Like if they would not have ton of sensors outside anyway... if you want to look outside just install a camera.
      The power needed for led light is completely negligible vs all the other power requirements you need.
      Most of the power would be for fuel production in order to go back home.
      Joints would be always a weak spot or something in which you have to paid a lot more to equal safety.
      More radioactive shielding = better, no because they put the radioactive accepting dose there (because it would be too expensive otherwise with their method) it means that it is ok, no when you can achieve more shielding at lower cost.
      Even those walls would not shield much radiation.

    Brilliant design, but total fantasy. This couldn’t be built, with today’s technology, right here on Earth, with a full crew of human technicians to correct the inevitable bugs, how could this possibly work on Mars? And all the materials manufactured from Martian dirt? Get real. Needs to be MUCH simpler.

      Lunarcrete has been a research topic since the mid-80's. Only problem is, it must be cast in a pressurized vessel as otherwise the water would evaporate before hydrating the cement.

    What an absolute joke and total naive ambition of such plans to send humans to Mars. First with the numbers planned plus weight and size of the ship, fuel requirements and realistic times could be well over a year there and longer back. For Earth and Mars alignment to give the shortest travel distance, might mean a year or more living there. Even with all this 3D technology it would mean several humans in close proximity for maybe three years and unlike astronauts circling earth for half a year with the knowledge if need be they could be back on earth with in a month. Yes there are projects for people to pretend by wearing pretend spacesuits and living in pods in deserts with others - to see the effect on humans coping living with each other. It is all false and wishful thinking as no way apart maybe from very senior Buddhist Monks can 'even' very intelligent, proven calm personalities, group harmony tested profiles astronauts being able to live in such proximity with out ending up killing each other. We as a race on the evolutionary scale when we consider the type of films, games, pursuits and interests where violence, sex, self abuse, egos etc are now the norm - really are still in our caves banging the rocks. Plus even if the pods made to house them are technological marvels than we are amazed at when we watch them are still no more than confined huts with nothing but 'red' dust, stones and dried mud ever where. No research is being done on not seeing the green grass or blue sky of earth for so long, not letting loose and getting drunk, finally getting away from those at work or at home who drive us mad. Also the need for sex, even if planned and profiled assigned couples is planned for, what about falling outs, jealousies or unplanned relationships. What happens if your planned partner after two months fancies another member of the group and you can hear them having sex in pod you live in. I only went through 6 days of a girl friend choosing to dump me on a holiday for a guy whose wife I certainly did not fancy, and I am sure if I had known I would have had to listen to them having sex and me none for two years, I expect I would have murdered them both. We as a race, are no way ready for space travel in both terms of our primitive and basic traits plus current technology to travel to space. It may well be that even if there is intelligent life out there, life as know it 'Jim' due to it's very makeup is bound to the planet it is created on. Also to be honest even loving SF, watching the man land on the moon (if we actually did) and following all the NASA flights I now at 66 years old and see in truth what a foul, violent, destructive and obnoxious race we mainly are - should NEVER be allowed to colonize space.
