For this who didn’t know, Herb Welch is based on real life reporter Dick Oliver, and Jack is based on real life Jim Ryan. The two had an argument during a live broadcast where Dick was interviewing a tenant about a landlord-tenant dispute. Jim criticized Dick for his lackluster reporting, leading to an epic on-air dispute. ‘‘Twas gold.

I love how he tried so hard to follow the mic, which at first, seemed like innocent, just Herb's arm getting tired...then turned into a Three Stooges homage

Maybe he wrote it but Bill Hader makes old timey references all the time. It's why he did impressions of Alan Alda and Vincent Price on the show, that was his wheelhouse. He talks with Conan about how they both do this on Conan's podcast interview with Hader.
Allagí yes good point and it should be noted that Bill and John wrote together for this and Stefon and probably countless other sketches. Not to mention Documentary Now too! They’re just an awesome team.

Of course, Hader is an absolute riot... But I feel like Sudeikis deserves more credit than he gets, his attempts to stay professional and keep Herb on track are almost as funny in my opinion.

I would say the best since the original cast, and that includes the class with Will Ferrell - who on his own was hilarious, but the ensemble wasn't stand out comedy.

Jesse's name in the sketch is, Derrick Smalls. That's the name of the bass player Harry Shearer played in, This is Spinal Tap. Prolly, not a coincidence. Harry was once a snl cast member, briefly in the 80s.

The audience doesn’t seem to appreciate it, but this skit had me in tears. The second mic gag, the “died 5 seconds ago” announcement, and Bill’s death gape and posture are executed so well. I am so happy to have discovered this inventive, inspired SNL gem today! 😊
