Having worked in comedy for many years, the often accepted bro-wisdom, (stated way back by John Belushi to Jane Curtin) was that women aren’t funny. This always rankled me, because some of my biggest laughs and most remembered comic moments were provided by women. One of the reasons often given was that women have a harder time being unattractive and often comedy ain’t pretty. The reason given is that our culture puts such a high premium on women’s looks, so there might be something there, but Cecily Strong takes all those “facts and opinions” and smashes the hell out of each and every one. Not only is she not afraid to be “unattractive”, and be hilarious, she is able to also be drop dead gorgeous and be crazy funny. She transitions between these two extremes and everything in between, with such an ear and heart for all her characters, and allows their humanity, hypocrisy, warmth, quirkiness, humour and sometimes sadness, play out without any one choice obliterating the others. IMO that is her greatest gift and talent and why I’d swim through cold water if she was performing on a nearby island. The fact that she is beautiful and can sing so well, are appreciated by all of us, and accepted as essential items in her acting toolbox. Tools that she is fearlessly uses to serve her characters, whether she subverts her beauty or wears it like a suit of quirky armour. I can’t say enough good things about what she does.
Those men are usually not funny themselves and can barely read. They also struggle with basic hygiene and have poor social skills. Their close mindedness prevents them from seeing that anyone can be funny or not and sex/gender is one of the last things that would stop humor.
[3:12] I saw Cecily do this bit at an actual McDonalds. The other cast members were with her. They were pretending to be ordinary Crew members, and then, all of a sudden, out in the dining area, they launched into the entire sketch. They never broke character!
Cecily will go down as one of the most talented, underrated and versatile players SNL has ever had. Took me a while to appreciate her but now I realize how much better she makes every skit.
Cecily Strong... when she first started, I thought "noooo". But soon, very soon, I realized the TALENT. She has been unbelievable! Just love when I am wrong!!!
Finally, a reason to watch SNL, I think she has elevated the show to new highs. A real talent, and completely nails every impression. That Brigitte Bardot has me on the floor for hours. #cecilyISsnl
I love her and vanessa bayer so much and yes they do get appreciated but i still feel like they are underrated because they arent known for much outside of SNL. I wanna see them do their own things like how amy poehler had parks and rec and tina fey had 30 rock
The thing I find about Cecily Strong or Kate McKinnon or other great cast members like them is there is hardly ever a moment they don’t break out of character. Even when they get the giggles or whatever, they are still in character. You can see it in their eyes. It makes their characters so much more believable.
Ms. Strong is an unsung or at least an under-sung hero of SNL. While other cast members are breaking character, Strong is pouring on the hilarity with a straight face. She's merciless. She's killing.
