I went to prodominently white school the volleyball coach asked me to play volleyball because of how high I could jump. So my junior year I played front line, I was really good, the newspapers would put my pic in the paper and some coaches couldn't believe that I had never really played like that. Long story short we made it to the state championship at UNC-Chapel Hill aka Carolina and I basically just watched the ball go back and forth. Our setter would not set me, I even asked her why she just looked and said nothing. For that to happen there had to be a discussion before the game between the players, the coaches, and the parents. I didn't cry when we lost. I also decided not to play my senior year. Not going to use me. Plus I had state titles already.😉

I started playing tennis at the age of ten and I played tennis at a predominantly white middle school and high school in West Texas. I also played USTA championship division tennis as a junior. As a African American player I faced racism and intimidation that was unimaginable. I am 50 years old now and very proud to see so many African American players, but Tennis is another sport that has a long way to go when it comes to diversity and racism.
The coaching mom was out of control and breaking the rules. The officials are negligent in running a proper tournament by not following the rules to eliminate needless drama.

His mother is white BTW.... I just know from witnessing what I did without saying anything that some of the calls he received were uncalled for. I also witnessed other white parents from my son's team also stating that the calls were suspect. Sometimes a you call a spade a spade. There's no sorry for us mentality going on here but sometimes we can let another know when we've had the same experiences. There are no excuses that I'm using and I've never told my son that the reason he got those calls were because he is black. However, I know what I felt and I know what I've experienced with him and I know how aggressive players were with him and how restrained he had to be in dealing with it because as soon as he matched the same energy the calls were a lot more one sided.

Something happened to me like that, I was playing in a park rec tournament, the player I was playing was acting like a A$$. I spoke to the REF about it, he basically did nothing, so then I told the REF, to get me the tournament DIRECTOR. I told the director what was going on, I asked the director to watch. Our match. I think the father should of went over to the DIRECTOR and bring him over to the match to watch, and he should of told the DIRECTOR that he IS FILING A WRITTEN FORMAL COMPLAINT TO THE TENNIS ASSOCIATION, and start filming what is going on in the match. PARKS needed to stop the match, and ask for the DIRECTOR, AND TELL THE DIRECTOR SHE WILL BE FILING A WRITTEN FORMAL COMPLAINT TO THE TENNIS ASSOCIATION, IF THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR CONTINUES. You should always come in with a plan for MESSY PLAYERS. GOD BLESS THOSE WHO WALK IN PEACE.
