  • While kayaking yesterday morning, this heron followed me most of the way down the river -- resting on a log, and then flying to another one further up whenever I would arrive to where he was perched. These were uncharted (to me) waters, and I did not know that the end of the line was just up ahead.
This video occurred when the Great Blue Heron sat and stayed on the barrier, as he knew this was the end of my river run for the day. We were approximately 15' - 20' apart, and sat in silence for several minutes, enjoying the morning together, and mutually wondering about each other.
Eventually, my arm was growing tired as I was holding myself in position by grasping a tree limb with my left, and holding the phone camera with my right. When I re-positioned, the heron had had enough, and took off in flight.
What a privilege to be so close to such a magnificent, (even prehistoric-looking!) creature, traveling up the river together, all the way to the division-log.
As I kayaked that day, I was writing lyrics for a song, and there is a verse included about the Great Blue Heron. At this point, it is just a poem, but guitar chords are on the way. :)
