For the longest time it was thought that the famous photo of a heron eating a rabbit would just be a one-off moment but no both the blue heron and gray heron commonly hunt rabbits. Then again it was also thought that weasels were not typical prey until the scat of grey herons proved otherwise.
Weasels are quite small BUT will take on much larger prey and are fearless , a large Heron is a big mistake from the weasel or maybe the heron was hunting in the long grass and came across the weasel which was probably hunting itself . Herons are just as bold and will eat anything it can kill !

To a heron who has virtually every advantage, and take time to carefully swallow prey anyway....a drawn out capture is no problem for it.

You could say it’s defending itself but I found it strange. This went on for nearly 30 minutes until I left that area of the site. You don't screw around with Heron's...!!! They may not have talons like a bird of prey possesses but they may up for that in sheer beak power. All it takes from that dagger like bill is a few direct hard hits in the right place and it's curtains for there given prey. Even Birds of Prey such as Bald Eagles give them a wide birth even though they've been known to predate on Herons. It's not an easy take down for them at all. I've been in the avian field for nearly 30yrs so i've seen my fair share of Heron vs Eagle encounters. If the Eagle catches them off guard it's curtains for the Heron. But if it's head on TOTALLY different story.
It was getting a bit distressing to watch,the herring seemed to strangle for want of a better word the weasel until it went limp,but again once dropped it began to attack the herring!Vert bizarre,I was at work so I had to leave,they where both gone when I returned.

I have seen mink regularly prey on swans and those vids are distressing and I have seen a mink kill a hawk after wriggling free from its talons -again distressing and stoats attack seagulls and again distressing . I have seen heron regularly trying to kill weasel and stoat and often eventually succeeding -but sometimes not . they are fearsome little predators -uniquely so .... they do often attack anything that attacks them -like cats or coyotes or foxes etc plus they seem to be fearless in that they attempt to prey on....ie animals far larger than themselves - I would steer well clear of weasels and stoats if I were a heron but herons are also very opportunistic and often they are killed by hawks eagles and otters and so on-where their judgement fails them .I guess that eventually the heron won and if not the heron took flight and ended the affair -anyway thanks again for the kind reply .
We have great blue herons in the Midwest US where I live. Stupid people sometimes try to take selfies with them in their rookeries near jogging trails around lakes where I live, but they can be quite dangerous birds, they will attack your face, the bill is razor sharp and they are an incredible aim. They eat frogs and small mammals all the time, spearing prey with the bill. And they’re big, big birds.

I thought the heron is losing the battle at first. becoz weasels though small are much vicious and capable of killing the heron. that weasel was trying to get a grip on the heron's legs are the neck for that matter. but the heron handled it carefully holding the weasel away from its body. Its longer neck helped with that.
