Based on the size of the groundhog, it appears to me that it's a baby. That would explain its apparent lack of fear when faced with a mortal enemy.

Suprised. Even an adult Seasoned Red Tailed Hawk will take an adult ground hog. They attack other raptors such as Eagles and great horned owls. Why are you suprised? Ground hogs figure very favorably into a Red Tailed Hawk' s menu. If anything , this video just proves how efficiently this adult hawk does it's job. Excellent capture

The man's presence was a distraction the hawk used to his leverage. The groundhog had two forms of predators to watch out for and therefore his attention was divided. That hawk knew that man was no threat to him, that's why he didn't fly off. The hawks near me are not this adapted to human life. If a hawk is way up in a 80' walnut tree and you come out of the house, they fly away. Same with the great horned owls.

I remember watching a similar situation with a hawk & a squirrel. The hawk was pirched on a branch about 7 ft off the ground looking straight down at a squirrel that just appeared to be petrified. After about a 2 minute stand off, the squirrel took off running & the hawk did nothing. I was totally deflated, i couldnt believe it. Then out of nowhere it swoops down where the squirrel was originally sitting & it plucks the squirrels baby right out of its hole. My mouth dropped as i watched this hawk fly off with the squirrels baby. And i look down & the mom/dad squirrel was watching as it took off with it too. Brutal to watch, for sure.

The hawk waited until the woodchuck turned to go in the other direction so that she could easily grab the woodchuck by the back of the neck. And yes, the camera person did get a bit too close to the action. The video would have been just as good if you had stood another 10 feet back.

Red-Tailed Hawks have become so accustomed to humans in my area, that we relate them to pigeons lol. I've even seen some of them land on gates near the front entrance of my building, while people were walking by. I kid you not. They only fly away if they have a meal that they just caught, and are trying to hurry and kill.
