This is jnterestin from the perspective of someone who transitioned to include more masculinity and as someone who's realised they've never been interested in sex. I know my relationship to sex has been rough and changed a lot over the course of transitionin and settlin into my gender. I don't think I currently agree with all of this, but it does provide a good deconstruction of some social factors that influenced tha. We all internalise messages about masculinity, "raised male" or not. Thank you for the work you do!

Thank you so much for these recordings, Sen! I wanted to add, as an archivist I really appreciate the amount of metadata you add in both the audio itself and the description. hooks' writing, of course, speaks for itself and I feel I'm learning a lot!

Did the "whatever" around minute 8:55 was on the book, or was it something you add to the text? Thanks for answering, and thanks for your wonderful voice and decision to share this very important book to us all, poor people.

This was one of my firstish recordings omg I feel mortified at the little mistakes, i used to write down when i slipped up while reading to go back and edit, that one must have got through, i heard a stutter on another part also. The whatever is not in the text, that's user error, probably me being embarrassed at talking about genitalia 5th chapter in 😆
I do my best not to move anything around and if I do to note it since they aren't my stories to change or edit. My bad, might have to re-record now I'm not on my phone

@@anarchistaudiolibrary Hi! Thank you so much for making these recordings. I've learned a lot more in five chapters than I had optimistically hoped for.
I thought the "whatever" was adorable. It was incredibly confusing. I replayed that part of the video three or four times while laughing at what a perv I must look like, and then I found the original quote on Tumblr (naturally). Even though I love bell hooks' example of healthy dialogue with children that involves their genitalia I still experienced an initial socialized resistance to hearing that part being read, and I can see how someone could be embarrassed or uncomfortable about reading that.

I don’t know if I fully agree with this. I guess this doesn’t apply to me. I feel as if Bell Hooks kind of looks down on sex. It feels as if she thinks lust is wholly a societal construct. I’d agree if she made it clearer that male lust is magnified by patriarchal desire to reaffirm one’s own masculinity through sex, but it just sounds like she thinks that lust is just a construct. I also feel like she doesn’t factor in capitalism and how that’s another element that alienates men from each other and the rest of the world. While yes, patriarchy shapes the ways in which men see sex, and the porn reflects those desires, capitalism, a fueler of addiction, is what drives men and young boys to consuming and becoming addicted to pornography. If we lived in a fairer society where hierarchies didn’t exist and meeting people wouldn’t be such a hassle, I believe that men’s inner-loneliness will be somewhat assuaged. I just don’t fully buy that my desire for sex and closeness is simply just born out of patriarchal conditioning. A part of it is, sure, but most of it is due to me just wanting to be close to someone, and sex doesn’t have to be the evil conduit that she somewhat makes it out to be.

I agree - and I think this does show its age in a few ways. 1986 I think people were still trying to define their ideas of self against the backdrop of what was expected and taken from them, and she writes from having survived two abusive relationships so I understand why her love for the physicality of sexuality might be poisoned or at least informed by that context. Sexuality is not the enemy, but the Hunger and then forcing others into meeting the shape of your hunger is where we lose it. If you haven't read Audre Lorde's the uses of the Erotic I highly recommend it

it's from sister outsider which I think I have a copy of but not the specific chapter - just mended that, here's a link: drive.google.com/file/d/1o-eUR4u-T2Vr6FH4ZBVS3LWdJQylBc1i/view?usp=drive_link
I may even read it for the channel if I don't blush to death first but it has a lot more of that intention and sacredness to it. Maybe because she's a lesbian, though I know queer relationships are not free from intimate or domestic violence either, even if it's hidden behind closed doors
