The skateboarding community is so nice, I don't think people understand this because of the stereotypes surrounding it. When I was younger and tried to learn how to skate, some older skaters that were in high school helped teach me how to skate better and gave me tips on how to skate. Anyone can learn how to skateboard and most people are super chill and helpful!
Yeah when I went to visit a park for work reason with my board as a beginner, I was so fucking nervous. I can't ollie but was learning and I was there with work to give out free samples of a clothing product we just launched and wanted to record reactions and people skating with it. One for our social media to help promote but also to get feedback from skaters since we felt it would be something they would like. To me I felt like I would had been looked as such a poser lol but the skaters were super friendly. I think it's most of the time one person has one bad experience and that ends up being the only one people remember and it carries on and on. So far every skater I met is pretty chill.
What are the stereotypes surround it? I've always seen them as chill/laid back, friendly-enough folks. Or is this like the lens through a security guard or something? moms being concerned about the youth getting up to no good? anarchy?
@@Siberius- The stereotype used to be that skaters didn't really care (mostly about public property) hence why in many public places in America, there are bans on skateboarding, but not bans on other modes of transportation such as biking. I think it's a dumb stereotype, but there are still people who still think that sort of way, although it's definitely been changing in recent years.
As someone who is a huge fan of both Maya and skateboarding, can I just say how unexpected how awesome it is to see an absolute legend like Ricky Glaser responding to Maya?!
The skateboarding community is something to behold. They help everyone and knows the difficulty of skateboarding, they take every opportunity to help the beginners and sit like a proud father staring into the sunset once they landed a set trick.
Some of my best memories as a teen are skating to a park in the morning, staying there all day just chatting, drinking, skating and then cruising home when it got dark. You can meet people who you'd never usually talk to and within minutes you'll be friends just because you both like riding around a piece of wood with wheels.
The great thing about the skating community is they all started where you are. I skated for well over thirty years and never once did anyone mock me for not knowing a trick or for trying something new. The best community I could ever have been a part of.
yeah, the regulars at my local park were stoked when anyone learned something new. Guy who's been skating for a decade learns noseblunts? We're stoked. Guy who's been skating for two weeks can comfortably ride every ramp in the park? We're stoked.
He actually collabs with Braille Skateboarding. Their entire mission is get people in with tutorials and getting kids new boards when they hit the park. They got amazing people on their team.
Well, you should check his live stream when he watched attempts - his critique is regarding those advices that guy was giving, like "just do a kickflip".
@@dandymcgee Yeah some people were just not liking his coaching. I do agree he wasn't good at it but I still saw that maybe he was doing his best since she from what I heard in the stream asked him for help. I won't fault a guy for having good intensions but bad execution. Just something for him to take into consideration next time.
Maya really took him saying dont listen to your friends advice the wrong way. Had she just hung onto what flip said and never learned how to ollie on her own before attempting a kickflip she would never learn to kickflip. Thats all he was trying to say.
sit down with your board at a good spot, and use it as a tech deck too and try and do the tricks while sitting too, it will let you get a better feel for how you are suppose to slide your foot and how much to pop and how to lift the other foot to not make it hold the board down, sort of like the rail holding tip, but just sitting.
seeing Ricky Glaser Maya combo was not on my 2024 list, as a fan of Braille Skateboard through the years, this is a win all over the place. Keep skating! (:
this is a collab I never thought I would see. I love ricky, was so stoked when he moved to cali to join braille. awesome dude. he responds to dms too hes a nice dude
Hell yea. The thing Maya is best at is getting other TH-camr's to work with her. This is quality. I can just imagine my ugly ass with a sanctuary, getting no tips for shaving my head and completely ignored when I fail new hobbies lol.
This reminds me of the channel i subbed to a while ago called State of Skate. They ran a series called "learning to skateboard/snowboard" and were a lot of fun
My only recommendation if you’re my age (mid 20s) learning to kickflip is to literally have a proper warmup without the skateboard. Doing squat jumps, active stretches, and maybe even tumble around on the grass to get your body moving. Skating stiff is very difficult. And also visualizing and doing the skate movements on concrete without a skateboard can sometimes show you how awkward the movements are even without wheels under your feet
When I was younger I got good at skating, not a pro level but good enough to get a shop sponsor. It took me over a year to learn to kick flip so don't feel bad if it takes a while
Ricky is a Legend! Worked with Braille and has been a social media skater for some time, great skater too. You got this Mia! Lotta worlds coming together, my love of animals and skateboarding haha.
The rail method is legit and people talk smack about it. But it's how I learned to pop some of my hardest flatland tricks, it will help! All of his tips are super solid.
man learning to skate would be so much easier back in the day if I had tutorials like what available. so good and methodical. The best we had was a couple pictures and a line of text in skate magazines we shared
yeah dude when i got into skating in the 90s i had no idea what anything was was or was named. we'd just jump off stuff. no idea what ollies or kickflips etc were. no vids. it felt like you had to be in california to really progress and learn things my partner got into skating 3 years ago and she's better than i ever was and watches skating videos and youtube constantly. i had like... only cky2k to watch lol
For people unfamiliar with Ricky Glaser, he rolls with the Braille Skateboarding crew. They have a youtube channel which initially started as a way to teach people how to skateboard, so he's a perfect coach.
Hey Maya ! just so you know .. legit/real skateboarder never look down on other skateboarder especially people like you that are new , skateboarder always try to help other skateboarder to improve because they know how hard it really is ! kepp it up you got this girl !
I love Flip so much, poor guy doesn't deserve any of this 😢😢 He never claimed to be a good teacher. Maya already made it clear he dragged him into this 😅
Poor Flip... Haha, I thought his additions were fun. He has a fun dynamic with Maya. But definitely not and never claimed to be a coach haha. Seriously impressive video though. So many relevant clips. Crazy haha
I was just going to post about the braille skateboard dude because I thought I remembered him from that channel. His advice isn't bad tho, some added tips - don't grab those bars if you use that method until after the jump/flip as it will mess up balance needed by you when trying the real thing (just grab when you leave the board), wear higher socks with padding as you will hit the shins a LOT, try tightening/loosening the truck kingpin a bit to find what is comfortable under the side pressure here, and last try to keep in mind the goal is to flip it up towards the feet to catch it and not to flip it around on the ground and then land on it after it does. Good luck, skateboarding is a wonderful sport and you can't imagine how good it will feel when you land this first one. If you thought how an ollie felt was cool, just wait.
Dont give up! You got this! 🙌
I like skate
Hey its the dude!
You're an absolute legend Ricky. Your part for Folklore was so sick! Love to see ya supporting one of my favorite streamers.
Important question that I really need an answer to, will you ever send a Christmas tree flying through the roof with Braille?
So nice!
wow this is a cross over i never expected lmfao
Same lol
And yet - until I saw it, I didn’t know how much I wanted it.
forreal same lmao

its so funny she probably planned kickflipping as a one-time stream for variety wednesdays now she has to commit but we are here for it

As someone that only knows about Maya through QT and has no idea who Mr. Glasser is, this is the collab I never knew I needed
What makes him a legend? I’m not trying to flame but I genuinely don’t know him even though I come from the skating community

She gave up today because of weather but next Wednesday she’ll get it for sure
Thanks for the info!

Yea it's gotten crazy cold in the southern US.

That was an amazing addition to the kick flip arch. It was a great positive video.
Ricky is def one of the hardest working skaters out right now. Does not surprise me he made this so fast.
compared to?
@@mintyCS compared to me who has owned a skateboard for 14 years and doesnt practice at all.
@@SLAP1FACE What about all the skaters grinding for video parts/sponsors/events still making no money just to skate lol

Lol I love how it started so wholesome and then he was just like, "but fuck this guy in particular"

what do you mean? all he said was that he was not a good coach. which is 100% true. i think you're being a bit dramatic.
"i like sk8" - ricky ice
Incredible advice from Ricky. I did all those steps before landing my first kickflip, they're super helpful.
It was only a question of time before Ricky got wind of this 🤣 Amazing!
Lol real, im excited for ludwig to enter the chat
Been skating for 20 years I believe in you Maya, don't ever give up you can do this!
Wow, that was actually super cool of that person to do. Made a tailored video and was an excellent teacher, I bet this helped a lot actually
I don’t know skateboarding but this was so nice and educational that it even made me want to try. I won’t, but it made me want to.
do it, you won't.
Oh you will.
What a lovely human and how nice of him to do this... You seem to bring out the best in people Maya. Cheers from cold snowy Canada. ~ulrich
