    This is awesome Fella's! Thanks so much for bringing this to us Michael.. I really hope this starts off a yearly shoot out and that manufacturers get on board and lend you guys their projectors.. Just have to say I could listen to Jonathan talk all day he articulates so well and seems such a calm, chilled and super intelligent guy.. Great stuff!

    love the average consumer perspective on this video! my setup is in a multipurpose room where we play board games, workout, watch movies, watch tv, play xbox. can't black out every room just to get the "best" conditions. I went EPSON 5040 due to ability to have lights on and still see have a usable image, but lights off, change view modes.

    This shootout saved me $5k!! I was torn between the NZ7 and NZ8. But, after reading the reviews/comments on the forum and this video... NZ7 it is. I'll put that extra $5k elsewhere in the room.

      There were definitely some subtle differences between the two. The higher up you go, it seems the more the law of diminishing returns is at work. The NZ7 is a fantastic projector. Send me an email if you are interested in one info@hometheatertours.com

      The only thing that might push me towards the NZ8 would be that it has far better 8K eShiftX capabilities to future proof it....but is that worth an extra $5,000....that's yet to be determined? I heard JVC is going to do some huge price hike up in February?

    This was great! Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible. The rest of my comment isn't intended to be a critique; I just wanted to share a thought I had when watching this. I know that using MadVR for tone mapping to SDR allowed the older generation of projectors compete, but maybe next time you guys do this you can skip the external tone mapping and feed actual HDR signals to the projectors and see what they can do. I have to wonder if the latest projectors can do a better job of tone mapping; I hope they could since they should know exactly what their own capabilities are. A side by side with vs. without madVR with HDR source material on identical or almost identical projectors would be great, too. Cheers!

    Great video. I still own a JVC X570 (RS420) and with external tone mapping with the UB420 it puts out an incredible HDR image. It has also brought new life to my Blu Ray collection by upscaling them to 4K. Every time I start thinking about upgrades to a newer native 4K projector I watch a movie and can’t bring myself to spend the extra money.

      @@jin5667 that home theater dude channel has a good comparison to the Sony 715 and NX line (forget the exact model but it was $8,000). Such a great video, thank you! Well worth the wait. One suggestion for a 2023 edition - if you do one - would be to have a segment at the end where you turn off MadVR. I totally get why you used it for the blind tests to even the playing field, but it would be great to see some actual footage of the lower end projectors side-by-side with the higher end ones. You wouldn’t even need to do blind testing, as it sounds like the results would be pretty obvious. But for those of your viewers who are actually trying to figure out if spending $5k vs $15k on a projector is worth it for them, the exclusion of MadVR would be the best way to get a real sense of that. Thanks again!

    Thanks for the comparison. I still feel peak projector for me in a batcave is the JVC x9000. I notice contrast much more than resolution and with MadVR I feel the contrast/HDR I get from the x9000 is unrivalled. Even in a batcave there's a zero sum game with contrast - you push the peak white too high and the reflections form the room wash back onto your screen, thus diminishing the contrast. I had quite the revelation when I stopped watching HDR stuff in high lamp mode, in low lamp the contrast appeared even better!

Now I'm building my first full home theater and this couldnt be more helpful, in my space a 100in screen is the max I can fit so this was massively informative. Need to keep doing research on how those more budget friendly work with a grey or darker screen to help with the contrasts because it really seems like alot of the higher end projectors come alive on screens I just don't frankly have the space for. Also it will be interesting to see a repeat test with hopefully the new LS12000B to see if it has enough of an improvement over the 6050 to possibly compete head to head with the likes of the 295es and the upcoming NP5.

    If you look at the native contrast of the pixel shift RS PJs (like the 420), they are significantly better than the native contrast on the native 4K JVC PJs. The laser PJs have better dimming which "may" level the playing field. Like the guys said, I really think combining external tone mapping and level matching on a smaller screen took away the main advantages of the laser JVCs. Going with a larger screen and not allowing external mapping would have changed it dramatically. I also think you have to factor in the benefits of laser over bulbs when buying. One thing I think would have been useful is to try the filter in the NZ8. Since you used a 100" screen, and the NZ8 seemed too bright when maxed out, then the lumen loss from the filter may have actually helped, plus you get a greater color gamut.

    • @Jagman1996
      @Jagman1996 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @youthman I should have mentioned this but I really enjoyed this video. I've watched at least a couple dozen of your videos and this was by far my favorite. The NZ8 was a PJ I almost bought. Now I'm not sure. My screen is 103" but I have some ambient light during the day. My plan was to use max lumens during the day and to use the filter at night for more serious viewing. I could also do a larger scope AT screen and really take advantage of it. That's just a LOT of work. Then again, I could get LGs 99" OLED... pricing may be similar to the NZ8... especially since JVC no longer allows street pricing but LG does. I'm also really curious what rec 2020 triple laser PJs will come out this year. I suspect I might wait 6-12 months to see how the market plays out.

    Screen size:
    If you've got 100" screens (because you can fit 2 of them in) but you want to be testing (for example) 130" screens, what would happen if you simply zoomed the projectors to project 130", and you left the over-spill hit black velvet? With all the opinions and voting thoughts I would have liked to see people say which one they would actually buy. Even those with the funds I am curious if they would spend for the laser vs non laser JVC or even the Epson.
    I guess my conclusion is the NX7 is a better value than the laser series being a similar image for less. The Epson 6050 or try to get the same 5050 for model even less will not have the blacks of the NX7 but WHOLE lot of savings and should still do well on a large screen. The optima is for your kids bright playroom, outside but would never hold it's own for an enthusiast on a larger screen or without the tone mapping boost it received.

    Kind of surprised the JVC beat the Epson 6050 that solidly. I prefer the 6050's brighter image and use that brightness to be able to engage my color filter for HDR color volume and coverage. (and for my bigger 150" screen) Many do prefer the JVC for it's blacks, but I didn't think that view was THAT universal, and it's not like the Epson has bad blacks, especially when you have the iris settings, tone mapping and filter set "right". Both solid projectors that fill slightly different needs and scenarios, so I expected the vote to be more mixed at least. When you factor in price, the Epson usually comes out ahead in a price for performance scenario too.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes we did not tell the participants which projectors they were looking at so price was not a factor into their decision on which they preferred the best. We found in our testing that most people prefer deeper black levels than they did brightness once we opened all the projectors up.

    Thanks for this awesome video! I am considering getting the NZ7 to use with my 100" screen. Being a big 3d fan, I will surely watch all my 3d blu-rays on it (via the Pana UB9000). I am a bit concerned about the lumens on the NZ7 for that purpose. From what I can gather from this video, there is not a lot of practical difference with respect to brightness between the NZ7 and NZ8 in real life when viewed on a 100" screen. I guess that pertains in particular to 2d content and likely then 4k HDR content. But would you say that the same is true for 3d content on the NZ7 vs the NZ8 with respect to lumens/brightness? Or is the incremental costs going from NZ7 to NZ8 worth it for viewing 3d content to get the added brightness (again; will be watching on a 100" screen). Thanks again for the awesome video. Keep up the good work!

    Some people would say you didn't give the projectors a chance to shine on such a pedestrian screen such as an Elite. Well I love my Elite, and if your $10,000 projector needs a $3000 screen to outperform a lower projector...that says more about your projector than the screen.

      👆👆👆 we really didn’t receive many comments complaining about the budget friendly projector screens we used. I think it’s crazy to spend $3000 on a projection screen but that’s just me. I feel you can get more for your money investing it in other places of your home theater

      @@Youthman I agree I sell everything from Elite Screens to Screen Innovation and Stewart Filmscreen. All most people need is that Elite Screen. Yes I've designed some systems with acoustically transparent screens and motorized 16:9 to 2.35:1. But those are not the norm.

    How did the sony 295 compare to the Epson 6050?

      Epson came out ahead. Take a look at Ryan’s post in the description below for the scores

      I’ve been trying to find it… even checked the avs post but can’t find info on a direct comparison between these two….

      Looking back at Ryan’s post, both projectors got beat out by JVC Projectors so they never went head to head

      That’s a shame… seems like the likeliest competitor…. Especially since higher end songs weren’t available

      My understanding is Sony hasn’t been faring well in the projector market. That might be why no one out of 89,000 subscribers offered to bring one.
